Joel Grimes has traveled the globe creating award winning images making his subjects look larger than life. Whether it is a celebrity or an everyday person, Joel believes that lighting plays a huge role in that process. The biggest challenge for photographers, learning lighting, is two fold: First, with so many options on the market, choosing the right strobe, modifier, etc… can be so overwhelming. Second, lighting is generally taught from a technical approach, making it way too complicated. We have engineers trying to teach artists, totally overlooking the creative process. This is a recipe for disaster.
Have you ever heard the acronym KISS, keep it simple stupid? Joel has this saying, “You can rock the world with one camera, one lens and one light”.
To learn lighting, you have to start by using one light. Master one light, and you can master ten lights. Follow Joel as he shows you how to create amazing portraits by using just one light.

I have been a B&H customer for many years. Simply the best. Thank you B&H for bringing these amazing photographers and creative people on CZcams.
What a clear explanation of how light impacts what you get in a photograph! I have read a lot about this subject, but Joel has knack for explaining this subject matter so well!
Joel, your humility is your genius. I love how you totally level with us about how you came by your incredible depth of knowledge through simple experimentation. Great guy.
What a great guy and presentation. Love it that he is so honest about his photography, really enjoyed this.
I cent percent agree with his statement that one may not know the terminology of Lighting but to understand what works well is super important. Great lesson. He is one of the best.
I had never watched a video so long with so much pleasure. Thanks B&H
@S Tra that takes about 2 mins
Fantastic lecture, Joel. Thanks for your enthusiasm, your intelligence, and your experience. You make one helluva teacher, and I aspire to create the kind of art you do. Kudos.
There are many wonderful photographers out there who teach but I absolutely love watching and learning from Joel Grimes. His down to earth teaching style and his self deprecating humor makes him so relateable. I can't say thank you enough. I have gained so much knowledge in this relatively short video seminar.
This may have been the absolute best tutorial ever on lighting - thank you B&H and Joel. Joel your work is inspirational and your attitude is a right on!
not only is Joel a master photographer, he is a master communicator. He makes me want to grab my camera and shoot. Bravo, Joel & B&H
The guy shoots full time for a job and then does 50 projects just for fun a year - that's a guy that just genuinely loves what he does. Really inspiring.
Joel your honesty and sincerity defines you as a true professional who teaches from experience and from the heart. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience.
One of the best no nonsense straight forward photography lectures you'll ever watch! Master the art of ONE light, thats all it takes!
Best lecture i have seen! And Joel has so much passion for his job and watching this makes me really motivated to shoot some new stuff. Thanks for this.
I'm just 30mins into the video and I must say what a great teacher he is. I could follow along without having to think much
Joel Grimes is an impeccable example of the value of practical execution. Take action. Action, action, action. Schooling is obviously extremely valuable, but we can have a way of fetishizing schooling today. To think that JOEL GRIMES doesn’t know what he’s talking about because he doesn’t keep up with the “brand names” of the lighting techniques is to express perfect ignorance, even arrogance. Phenomenal talk. Thanks for posting!
I am currently taking Joel’s course on photography lighting. He is a great teacher and I like the way he breaks stuff down. I have 13 years as a photographer and I’m always learning something new. Coming from a darkroom and film setting to now has always been a hard switch but I love photography and Joel Grimes reminds why I love what I do. I took off from photography from 2007 until 2017.
When I discovered Joel Grimes I fell in love, the guy is genuine and humble, definitely someone that loves photography and has so much knowledge. I want more of Joel.
Best part is at 1:40:00 in the video. Shoot what you want, get good at it, and clients will hire you for that look. Don't try to copy other people and just do YOU really really good and customers will see that and if they love what you do then you're in like Flynn. :)
Yeap. For me also is one of the key moments - Take the risk, be yourself..
But remember, "The wheel does not have to be reinvented," because influences can be taken from other photographers
Love Joel. Really connect with the statement: "This is a great age" - we do, we live in a great age for photography.
Great presenter and teacher. Thank you Joel. And great advice at the end on “building a body of work” that is unique and true to you and your style. Very insightful. 👍
Great work again! Fantastic images and a very simple presentation by a Master of his craft. Great presentation, philosophy and skill. Thank you.
One of the best videos to understand lightiing in the simplest form. Great Joel.
Thank you B&H, and Westcott, for alowing us to see the art of photography trough the eyes of world's best photographers. Joel Grimes is great photographer and great person, which is easy to listen, clear to understand and enjoy to follow - he is real artist. These videos are great help for learning and making best of particular level of knowledge and equipment. Thanks!
Your enthusiasm is infectious Joel, love your talks and work!
Never watched a CZcams video this long before and it's been time well spent. You got yourself a new "loyal" fan Joel. Thanks
Second time watching it and it still makes sense. Learn something from it each time. Using one light makes so much sense and I am doing that and learning a lot. Great stuff Joe. Awesome talk.
"It's easy to be me, hard to be someone else" Great quote.
Agreed
this guy rocks. Love his energy. Also very cool how he tells what a lot of top pro's say: Create your own vision

I came to watch a couple of minutes, and stayed for the whole thing. Great tutorial!
This is the most useful information I have ever gotten on lighting, and all done in a crystal clear and informative way. This really IS lighting 101. Thanks! = )

This video could very well be everything you´ll ever need to know about lighting a person.
Wow, so much content in one video. Thank you so much from Germany.
True natural photographer. Great presentation.
BEST photographers presentation I have seen here on YT so far - and yes, he's so absolutely right telling people to find their own style for to be found and having success in their business, it happens twice to me... THAT'S the way it is... simply do not copy and bring your own creativity in ;)
Wonderful to watch!
My favorite so far especially the ending tip!
wow thanks Joe i found this very interesting the way you talk about light and the use of one light source. as i try to only use one speed light. i am from Cornwall uk
Fantastic, very inspiring!
This is outstanding!!!
Thanks BnH! You folks rock! I can’t appreciate enough for the values that I’m getting! I’m a beginner with goosebumps and tingles on my body to create!
We're so glad to hear this!
Love the video. Thanks! :)
Great! Thanks Joel!
I'll tel you what even though you can bookmark stuff online, or favorite things, I still make collages of images I like to either put on the wall or digitally as a background on my pc, so I can see it regularly
Sir great information Thank you so much.
I jus learned more with this in less than 2 hours then i did 6 years of shooting . Thank you do much joel this made it simple and i finally get it !°
Thank you for this video Joel!! I'm not good at math or knowing all of the terminology. I used to belong to a camera club and they looked down at me because I didn't remember all of that so I quit. Out of all of those people in the club, there are maybe 10-15 people that are professional, earning money doing photography. I am one of maybe 5 that works as a full-time photographer.
I appreciate all of your knowledge and the way you explain it. Thank you!
Reread this statement and tell me what's wrong with it.
This was so cool. I wish I knew of Joel sooner 👌👍🇦🇺
Simply inspiring!!
What a great lecture!
Great video and highly educative.
I hope B&H will have Joel back real soon. I really enjoy his personality....and always learn a lot from him Thumbs up to B&H....!!!!!
Fantastic video, many thanks.
You mention about shooting portraits against a grey background and blending in another background.
Does it have to be 50% grey because I can’t find anyone selling one
Ever since I accidentally tripped across your cowboy shot many moons ago; I’ve been enjoying your videos and tutorials. Like Bob Ross says, it’s happy accident! Thank you so much!
Excellent!!! Thanks!!
Thank this inspires me
great video!
Fantastic presentation. Disclaimer: I have purchased some of Joel's courses, and I do buy from B&H; love them both.
what a great bank of knowledge and tricks
Great video. very organic and down to earth discussion about principles of lighting. @ 1:39:00ish Good lens discussion.
"The size of the light source relative to the subject".
That is what you need to understand for all the other explanations. When instructors use use the above, all the rest starts to make sense.
Totally know the guy in the first photo!! Went to Jerome, AZ a few years back and met him. He raced dirt bikes back in IL once upon a time. I took lots of photos a his place as well.
Nice sharing! Thanks B&H.
Great Sir.. Learnt a lot.. You are a Lengend.
amazing talk!
What a nice, enthusiastic man.
Thanks for sharing your time and expertise Joel. Great talk. Informative and inspirational. Those two don't always go hand-in-hand when it comes to CZcams videos. Much appreciated!
cant believe I stay for 2 hours. Nice presentation
Do anyone know or can you tell me what printer he is using I love his work great video.
Great portraits.
I’ve had a load of e-mails from Joel recently (not unsolicited, I just can’t remember why I’m getting them) and I’ve largely ignored them as they come with lots of others in a cloud. Won’t be ignoring them in future. My kind of photographer.
I wish he had a link to the grey back drop he was talking about that would be great.
very nice video Thanks!
