He was known as 'The Kaiser'. Franz Beckenbauer is still probably considered to be the best German footballer of all time. The Bundesliga mourns its biggest legend and pays tribute to his life's work in this video. He was promoted to the Bundesliga with Bayern and led his club to four league titles in 12 years alongside Gerd Müller. As a player, he won the World Cup and the European Championships with Germany. And, as the coach of his native Germany, he became a legend by winning the 1990 World Cup in Italy. A first class human being as well. We will never forget probably the best sweeper of all time.

About 20 years ago, a guy in my amateur league team (in Australia) looked like FB, played in the same position and had the same sort of elegance / toughness / skill. I loved playing with him because I thought it was the closest I would get to meeting Der Kaiser.

You have to look at your life. Only people who have the same age as myself or maybe older had the pleasure to watch Beckenbauer, Pelè, Müller, Seeler as players. It is a sad day. But on the other hand, now they play all together again. What a team! Can't wait to see them playing in heaven later on!

I always remember Franz playing with his arm in a sling in the 1970 world cup playing against Italy. I was very young boy then watching it i have never every forgotten that. I became a big fan of Franz Beckenbaur over years. He has left me some great memories of what he done on the football pitch. His spirit will always live on here.

He was very gentleman , once I saw on tv as a coach he was shaking hands with players and coaches of final game of a world cup , Italy won the cup but he shook the hand of Italian coach looking at him admiringly and even following him with his eyes for extended seconds before shaking hands of others

Growing up playing soccer, my father would say to the defenders of our team, "Defend like Beckenbauer". At that time, we were 12 years old and didn't know who he was talking about. Once we saw some early footage of him, we got what he meant. RIP Franz. Thoughts and prayers for the family and friends.
