Is Baku, Azerbaijan all a facade? - What They NEVER Show You
Vložit

- This is Baku, Azerbaijan! The capital of Azərbaycan (Azerbaycan) is located on the Caspian Sea coast and the easternmost point of the Caucasus region!
Often dubbed "The Dubai of the Caucasus", oil rich Baku is known for its glitz, glam, lavish mega-projects and as a playground for the rich and famous of Azerbaijan. But it's not all like that. Azerbaijan is a country still very much developing and the average wage even in the bright lights of Baku is still only $300 USD per month (this during a period of high inflation and rising costs of living).
On the face of it, for most tourists, the city and the country may give the impressions that, like Dubai or Abu Dhabi, most are well off. However at present that just isn't the case, and many of the large skyscrapers and refurbished building shells hide the real Baku. The Baku where people still have to work two jobs to provide the necessities for their families, the Baku where people have the illegally extend their apartments just to have enough space to live. That begs the question, is Baku all a façade?
From Baku it is only a 'short hop' across the 'worlds largest inland body of water' to Kazakhstan! Just 4000km's to go to Almaty!
But first, welcome to Azerbaijan! 🇦🇿

What do you think of Baku? An incredible place or a glamorous city built at the expense of its people? Would love to hear your thoughts 😊
By the way, I said ‘Legzins!’ 😁❤️
Baku looks incredible to me. Loving your meal section - food is clearly a real passion for you both and it just works so well when you are eating and describing really authentic food. Great stuff!
Thank you so much Hamish! Really appreciate it 🥰
That fried bread with herbs is delicious, neighbour makes it for me.
Baku is much like other fossil fuel cities, the income disparity is huge. The old city shows so much of the stonework that European craftsmen learned and built castles, churches etc using the same architecture.
The Soviet/Russian apartments are so easy to spot, unfortunately.
Glitz with grubby poverty, typical fossil fuel city. 😥
Just returned from the Caucasus. Azerbaijan was our least favourite of the 3 countries. If you venture outside of the “Dubai” area, people are not doing as well. I believe we were told 200 or 300 dollars a month. People are lovely and willing to speak candidly, one on one.
I think that Baku dont show us all Azerbaijan and I like our Brothers ( one Nation 2 Countrys we Turks say ) but I know that not everything is Gold what is shining ;) But fact is that Azerbaijan is going to have a better Economy than the Other ex Soviet Countrys andt hope they will have one day more Democracy and give more attention to Nature .
I lived there as a child and I’m Afghan. Best memories ever. Very good people. Love you guys
I have just relocated from the UK to Baku.

Lol Iran is like among the most embarrassing countries in the world, all the elites, owners, and rich people in your country are mostly Azerbaijanis. Not only that, but if Azerbaijan were to declare war or have to defend against your country, you would have to claim an embarrassing loss because good luck dealing with our military support from Turkey, Israel, let alone the 15% of Azeris in your country. Stop this babble you have no idea what you’re talking about lmao
@Baby our motherland is Azerbaijan - whatever you say will not change it. for every action there is a reaction, don’t forget that. and don’t forget the turkic dynasties who ruled Iran for centuries and brought it glory and power.
@Baby no! Iran was ruled by Azerbaijani Turkic dynasties and empires. Don't forget about Aqqoyunlu, Qaraqoyunlu, Seljuks, Safavids, Afsharids and Qajars
What a beautiful city. I was blown away. Thank you for sharing it with us.

Watching your video it reminded me of something I hear all the time, no one else flies the country’s flag like they do in America. Baku sure loves their flag too!!! Just love seeing the world with the two of you. My mom instilled in me the love of seeing one or two “tourist” sites, but spend most of your time seeing how the locals live and play. Sure glad I can do that through you!
For anyone interested in a fascinating history, I can recommend a book called "The Orientalist" by Tom Reiss. The subject of the book is a man (Lev Nussimbaum) who was born in Baku early in the 20th Century had a fascinating worm's eye view of the Russian revolution and the First World War. As it turns out he died during WWII after a tumultuous life. Along the way, it is suspected that he is also the pseudonymous author of the notable Azeri novel, "Ali & Nino". I read both books, and I will say that the biography was far more interesting and enjoyable than the novel.
I'm replying to bookmark both books. I must look them up. Thanks for suggesting them.
@@Starry_Night_Sky7455 My pleasure, Starry_night. The person who suggested the Reiss book to me was a family friend (who incidentally is a Professor of Literature) and when I was through with that I went on to read "Ali & Nino", which is described in the Reiss book as a benchmark Azeri classic. I am afraid that if "Ali & Nino" is considered a classic in Azerbaijan, it really doesn't say very much for the state of Azeri literature!! However, The Orientalist is absolutely fascinating and was difficult to put down.

Very interesting how much your countries vary as neighbours, and at the same time also have so many similarities! Lots of love to Iran! ❤️
@@MattandJulia It's not that complicated, Azerbaijan and the entire south Caucasus were all parts of Persia until they were ceded to the Russian empire during the Russo-Persian wars of 1804-1828 that is why you see a mixture of Persian/Muslim roots and soviet influence topped with the current European-wannabe leadership's desire to integrate the country with Europe and distance itself from its origins.

Chris here, greetings from Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA. You never let us down. You DELIVER! The sights, the people, the food. Especially the food. Julia, you made my heart skip a beat when eating the chicken plov. I could not have said it better when describing the tastes, you stopped and simply said "I NEED MORE". Myself personally, I would keep eating and describe it afterward!😅😂🤣. I remember the earlier episode when you visited that plov restaurant and they were cooking it in those HUGE 'woks'!. I got the front of my shirt soaked I was drooling so much! (can you tell I am a foodie). Baku is such a diverse location, giving you the range of its history in one city. Amazing history lesson. The dish of lamb I would eat and repeat eating. When you listed the ingredients, I knew it would be wonderful.
The old city is actually more attractive to me than the "modern glitz" version of the rest of the city.
Unfortunately the architecture here on the west coast of Canada has very little left of the skilled and beautiful buildings. Everything got demolished along the way, except for a very few buildings. One building has art deco, another is much like the cold brutalist style.
Totally agree, the old city is by far the most amazing part of the city 😍
That is such a shame! Are there any efforts or organisations trying to preserve the heritage buildings? ❤️

4:35 Puerto Rico also serve food this way, rice & meat separated. This happens when the rice and the meat are cooked separately and their cooking procedures of each are done as different processes or different cooking techniques. But Puerto Rico also serves it all together only when the whole dish was cooked in the same process or in the same cooker. I must guess the other countries are just the same, if everything was cooked together then it is served all mixed on the same dish, if food were cooked separately and each by different processes then it is served separately on the dish.
Great video again like the sights and the food seems to be a must for you. Cant see any fitness being done. Is that just the walking 😁Enjoy you stay Did you go to the GP?
