- Come garden with me! I love love love to garden. In this video, I will show you how to successfully split and transplant your Hosta! Hostas are a great investment in your garden. One Hosta can produce many just by splitting it every few years. The Hosta’s super-strong root system does make splitting it a bit of a challenge, but it is well worth it. Once they are split, transplanting them, and watching them take root, requires little additional effort.
Hostas are a sturdy shade-tolerant perennial that double, even triple, in size year after year. That’s why splitting them and spreading them around your yard is possible even necessary for the Hosta’s health. I’ll show you how to turn one mature Hosta into 3. This video is going to be fun; check it out!

My mom had huge overgrown hostas and she was so frustrated she just started digging them up and hacking at them with her shovel 😂 good to know she was basically doing it right.
Hi Indiestripper! Yes, Hosta are super hardy plants that can take a hacking! Thanks for watching! 🤗🤗🤗

Hi Victoria, thank you for the lovely compliment and for watching!🤗🤗🤗
I have just watched several videos on splitting hostas. Yours is by far the BEST! No long winded, unnecessary explanation just to make a longer video. I immediately hit "subscribe". I couldn't agree more with all the recent comments. I look forward to more of your helpful tips. THANK YOU!!
Hi Cath🤗 Thank you so much. I’ll do another video soon on what you can do in the fall with your Hosta. Stay tuned!🤗
It's grey and rainy here for the last few days and for the next few days. Itching to get outside. I have a hosta that actually drops seeds and I found a bunch of little babies. I pulled them up and put them in pots. So far, they are still standing so I should have some nice little starts next season.
That’s the best gift when you see new Hosta sprouting up! Fertilize them during the growing season and they’ll be perfect for next year! 🤗🪴🤗
@@TrishTalkz Yes, thank you. I will have to be careful not to OVER pamper them! LOL!
Just have fun! Thank you and I’m now a subscriber! 😊
Welcome Diane! Thank you for watching!🤗🤗🤗
I plan to split my hostas for the first time this fall. They are my babies! You’ve given me confidence that I won’t kill them :)
Hi Stephanie! You can do it!🤗 Yes, Hostas do become our babies, because they come back year after year, bigger and better. They love to be split, so don't be afraid. Fertilize once, water often for a couple of weeks. Next spring you'll be very happy! Thanks for watching and sharing!🤗🤩🤗
WOW ... this is such an encouraging video. I love how you give guidance of how to split and replant while they are fully grown. Especially since this year, they came up early.
Denice, thanks for your kind words. I love love love my Hosta so sharing my care of them is my pleasure. Please let me know how splitting your hosts turns out.🤗🤗
Thanks for your detailed direction on digging up the Hosta during the summer. I will be doing this with my Hostas

I love your garden I have tried to grow Hostas I plant come started then died also not having any luck with Hydrangeas

Oh my gosh your home is so beautiful! Thanks for sharing your tips!!
Awww, thank you so much Mary! Thanks for watching.🤗🤗🤗
Thanks
Hi Elane! You’re very welcome!🤗
I’m new to growing and caring for hostas. I have a large area in my front yard that is completely bare. I get “some” late afternoon sunlight but the majority of the day my front yard is in the shade. Grass has failed so I’m going to plant hostas. I enjoyed this video a lot. When others spoke of splitting I had no idea what they were saying. I learned a lot from you today. Do you have a video on hosta seeds?
Hey there! You will love your Hosta. They are the plant that keeps giving! No, I don’t have a video on Hosta seeds, but I’ll try planting some from seed next spring. Thanks for the idea and for watching!🤗
I separated some yesterday & I soaked them in a bucket of water first. It was still tough to separate them. Hopefully they take off. I didn’t separate mine as big as yours so now I am second guessing myself. I may add a few more after watching yours. great job!
Hi Brenda. Your Hosta should be fine as long as you left the majority of the root ball in place for each piece. Hosta are super strong and resilient. Remember to water often for the next two weeks. 🤗
What a great video! I have a lot of old hostas in my yard that need to be transplanted and divided for relandscaping. I thought it would be too hard to do, or that doing it in summer would be impossible. Buying new is very expensive, and money is tight to hire out the work. THANK YOU SO MUCH for saving me A LOT of money, and giving me a new skill! I’m so excited for this new creative project! I’m going to have my girls (ages 4-9) help me out! 💗💗💗 P.S. I love how you did your landscaping. GORGEOUS! 😍
Awww, Maija, thank you so much! I am so happy to hear you're going to do this yourself. You and your girls will enjoy it, and you'll save plenty of money while you're at it. You'll never have to buy another hosta again. They are the plant that keeps giving! Please let me know how it all turns out. Thanks for watching! 🤗🥰🤗
Great video! Very well explained and I like how you separated the rocks from the mulch area using a small stone border. I’m going to use this idea as I have to do the same thing in my bed. Thanks!
Hi Liz! I am so glad you found the video helpful. Use up all the ideas. 😀 That’s why I made the video! And, let me know how your stone border turns out.
Thanks for watching!🤗🤗🤗
Beautiful host as with the hydrangeas!

Loved your video, thank you! I was wondering if I heard correct when you said when to plant? I e just purchased a new home, no landscaping, save some grass and seed and I want to put hostas seed n asap. We get turkey trying to dust bathe and i want to cover the dirt and also make the trees prettier. Appreciate the tips.
Btw you have an amazing garden. I am clueless about plants.🤪
Hi Kristy! Thank you so much for watching the video! So are you putting in Hosta plants or their seeds? The best time to plant your Hosta is early spring or early fall. However, if the area is shaded, you can plant your Hosta during the summer too. You'll need to make sure to water every day for a few weeks until the roots established themselves. Did I answer your questions? 😊
@@Kai77-24 I love them. Please ask your garden questions. I'm happy to help! Also, since you're in a new home, check out my videos on Interior Design! I'm sure you'll find some helpful tips there too! 🤗🤗🤗
Love this video but I’m still so scared of splitting my hosta. I don’t want to kill
It in the process 😭
Hey there! Don’t be scared! Hostas have a very strong root system. They bounce back from being split year after year!😄. Thanks for watching!
I didn’t realize that I needed that wheel barrel in my life until I saw yours. Where did you get it?
LOL! Hi Behati. I got it from Home Depot several years ago. I haven't seen it in the stores recently. Try looking for it online. You may find it there. Thanks for watching, and good luck! 🤗🤗
This was great. We have two that have become enormous and we didn’t know what to do with them.
Any suggestions for a hydrangea? We have a couple and had to move one. It was beautiful but the kids kept running through it. We moved it 10 feet to save it. It has not bloomed in the 8 years since we moved it. It still returns every year but no blooms.
Hey there mbrennan! So glad you found the video helpful! If your hydrangea isn’t blooming it could be a few things. Is it still getting at least 4 hours of sunshine? Did you fertilize it when you moved it? Are you pruning it? Hard to say what may be wrong. The good news is it’s still alive, so there is hope that it will bloom again someday!🤗🤗🤗
Nice video Trish. New sub.
Hey RB, Welcome!🤗 Thank you for watching and supporting!🤩
Such a great channel, so glad I found you today! Awesome tips 🙏🏾💯‼️ Question...have you ever split Day Lillie's, wondering is the plant could survive it👌🏾
Hi Zachariah! I am so glad you found me too! 🤗 I tried to clear out a section of day lilies in my yard one year. The next year they came back!😅 I didn’t split them, but I think you can with no worries. They too are very hardy! Today I am going outside to split a large patch of bearded irises. You’ll see that on an upcoming video. Thanks for watching!🤗🤗🤗
@@TrishTalkz 🙏🏾I appreciate cha, and I am looking forward to that episode👌🏾
Hi Zachariah I planted orange day lilies long long time ago (lol) around my yard. In recent years I dug them up, shared some with neighbors and they’re still coming back each year. I replaced them with mondo grass for a much tidier look. Now I have day lilies among the grass. They are hardy that’s for sure. I’ve never divided them just made sure the pieces had roots. Happy planting!
@@beadyr4810 wow! Thanks for the info and tips!
So I have hostas that I planted in front of my house when I had a large tree there and they are beautiful. The tree provided a good amount of shade for them and they grew well. We cut down the tree last spring however and they did well and have even come back this year huge and beautiful. Should I keep them there or move them somewhere shadier? I didn't think hostas could grow in a good amount of sun (full sun 7am - 3pm) but they appear to be ok? The leaves got a little brown towards the end of the summer last year. I live near Atlanta Georgia and water them daily or every other day on a watering system. New subscriber so I would appreciate any help you can offer!
Hey Sharona fellow Hosta Lover!😍 Since the root system has been established in that area, you don't need to move them. Make sure to only water in the evening, so your leaves don't burn! Thanks for watching and Subscribing!🌻🍀🌻🍀
Curious about the container you were shoveling the mulch into? Does it have wheels?
Hi Michelle! Yes it’s on wheels. I purchased them maybe 4 years ago from Home Depot. Thanks for watching!🤗🤗
I would love to see your care tips for the hydrangeas! I love hydrangeas so much, but they don't love me lol
Hi Nicole! I have been thinking about a hydrangea care video. I may split a couple of them in the Fall, so that may be the right time for a video. Thanks for the suggestion and the support!
🤗🤗🤗
Had to remove a storm damaged dwarf Japanese Maple which allowed only dappled sun on my hosta. Now they are burned around edges. It is July and not perfect time to relocate. Help, should I go ahead and relocate or just keep watering?
Hi Sheila! It's hard to know what they'll need without seeing the location. I would keep watering them and possibly shade them with a temporary shade. Can you plant another bush or tree over them? If not, consider moving them to another location in the FALL. Best of luck! Thanks for watching!🤗
🤩NEXT! Check out my video on DIVIDING IRISES: czcams.com/video/YZHOM2FobRo/video.html
I'm sure you'll find this video helpful and enjoyable too! Thanks for the support! 🥰🥰🥰
What type hosts was that the leaves are so large
Hi Vanessa! I’ve had these Hosta for almost 20 years. I’ve split them more times than I can count. I believe the variety is fire and ice, but I think it’s the soil I was using from a local nursery that started their growth pattern.
So glad you stopped by and watched the video!🤗🤗🤗
I've got a huge cluster of hostas that I need to move immediately but with very few options of shade.. its been on my patio over 6 years & is receiving new sun exposure due to trees that have been removed from a neighbors yard 🙈. Im afraid they'll all die 😔
Hi Adrienne! Were the Hosta on the patio in a container? If so, they should be ok, since the soil conditions aren't changing, just the sun exposure. Let me know...🤔🙂
@@TrishTalkz they're in the ground which is why they haven't been moved. They're definitely sun burnt already and I don't know where to move them to 🥺
@@TrishTalkz i dug them up & put them in pots. They all look dead
Hi Adrienne! Can you find a somewhat shaded area for them now that they're in pots? Hosta are very hardly plants. Cut off the dead leaves, water, and sit them in some shade. 🌳🌳🌳
You're talking rubbish...
How so Scott? 😁
Thank you!!!
Your welcome!🤗🤗🤗
