      Resurrection is actually _very rarely_ treated like a blessing in fictional stories. And that's because,since it's not possible in real life,they don't wanna make you feel _too bad_ and so they fool you into think that it would be a bad idea anyway so you better not even thinking of trying.

      I have a headcannon about vampires in the Buffyverse - when a person is made into a vampire, we know the human soul is gone and the demon takes over the body, right? But your thoughts and feelings don't leave your body with your soul because those are a part of your mind, so the demon gets that part of your body too. If a person is bad, like Liam was, then the vampire they become takes that to evil levels like Angelus did. If a person is ruthless and self-centered, like human Darla, then the vampire they become takes it to evil levels like she did. Drusilla as a human could see visions and was driven insane by Angelus, so that's what she was like as a vampire but more so.
      However, William was a loving son who took care of his weak, sick mother and a man who desperately wanted to find someone to love, so there wasn't much evil in him to begin with. He learned to enjoy the kill because he was taught to by the woman he loved, Drusilla, and by his exposure to Angelus and Darla. But take him away from that and put a chip in his head that takes humans off the menu... and you end up with Spike reverting to his caretaking ways with Dawn and Joyce, and finding someone to love in Buffy. He's still a vampire with a certain amount of evil in him because of the demon, which makes him unable to have remorse for his past because he doesn't have a soul, but he's closer to his human behavior now than any other vampire has ever been because of the chip.
      So that's my headcannon about how we have truly evil vampires like Angelus, but we also have more decent vampires like chipped Spike.

    Just like whenever Buffy had to kill Angel, I feel like Buffy’s friends don’t really comprehend the trauma that she would have faced. Even if she had been in a hell dimension like they originally assumed, surely they understand she couldn’t just bounce back to form? It’s like they expect her to immediately be her usual, chipper self. Spike has some absolutely fantastic scenes this episode, but I especially love his “Magic always has consequences” line.

    • @mb7626
      @mb7626 Před 13 dny +4

      Honestly one of the most annoying recurring dynamics in this show. I know 'outside' the text the reason is probably that separating or alienating Buffy from her friends in key moments drives home some key parts of the whole hero role thing. It's kind of like how in the high school seasons Giles would suddenly come down on Buffy hard about discipline, even when it was kind of uncharacteristic, because it would drive home the whole 'having a life vs being the slayer' thing that that part of the show was especially emphasizing. So from this stuff I'd say that character can/will be manipulated at times to get the Buffy-centric things to happen, which isn't necessarily *wrong* I guess. Like considering the nature of the production especially (none of this current like 8 episode Netflix seasons stuff), one can probably excuse a few 'hacks', if that's the worst thing we have to say about it, I guess, etc.
      But within the text, it legit just looks like the scoobies rely on Buffy so much that they just straight up don't even view her as a person in a lot of key moments, which, well, as someone that likes the character, I hate that for her lol.

But the last scene does wreck me. I never believed she was in hell, even when she said she was. Buffy's body was not swept into another dimension like Angel's was. It was left on Earth and she was a hero who sacrificed herself to save the world. All the worlds, really. Of course, she would have gone to heaven. Also, when she asked Dawn in the previous episode, "Is this hell?" Why would she ask that if she'd just been pulled out of hell? The final scene shows incredible trust in Spike. She's trusting him not to tell anyone else and believing he won't. What a step forward that is in their relationship. He's the only one she can be herself with now.

      Plus i'm pretty sure with all the magic in this series and how the magic system works surely there would have been a way to contact Buffy to find out for sure where she was before doing the spell.
      To be honest, this would make Willow's actions a bit darker and tragic. Like imagine she did contact Buffy but she didn't believe it was her and so went ahead with the spell anyway. That could have made the demon in this episode serve a bigger purpose because then Willow could say 'see, i was right. I never contacted Buffy it was that demon.' Since the demon takes Buffy's form too, and it would add a layer of denial when they find out they created it too. A denial that could be reinforced by Buffy lying to them about where she was.

    I appreciate how thoughtful you are in your reviews, but the more passionate part of me is surprised by how kindly you're viewing Willow. Yes, she has definitely represented goodness and innocence throughout the series, but I feel like the previous two seasons shifted away from that (and put it onto Tara, whom I love), so I don't think of Willow as innocent still. And frankly, the way she behaves in this episode just drives me nuts. While it's natural to want thanks from Buffy, so much of what Willow does and says is just flavored with a smug, self-congratulatory air. "Be happy; we got you out," especially gets me riled up because in my view, Willow is not saying this to be glad for Buffy's return, but to bask in her own success. And when Buffy lies to her friends about where she was and gives them the thanks she really doesn't feel, Willow is only too happy to be proven right in all her assumptions. The "script" has gone her way, which is the only way she can really be happy that Buffy is back. Maybe that's a harsh read, but that's my opinion on Willow at this point.

You are one of the few reactors that can enjoy the humor,appreciate the action, and respect the thoughtful underlying message.Many people doing what you present can’t convey the complexity of the show and its content. I believe you will enjoy this season.Fans can debate Season 6, I think it’s outstanding, but the audacity of the storyline of the first 3 episodes is compelling and courageous. Having a resurrection on a supernatural show is one thing but the way Buffy does it is another. No other show takes the time to attempt to show that it’s not all happy times and there are dire consequences. We are 3 episodes into the year and look at the emotional state at the most loved characters ( at the time of viewing) Buffy , the badass hero is an emotional wreck plunged into an emotional abyss. She did her duty and fulfilled all actions to protect out of selfless love . Her gift of grace is gone and now she must deal with the wrath of the world. You mentioned in observation that Willow was disturbing and you were concerned. Think how the season started with her slaughter of baby Bambi. Beloved Willow has been altered and shown with flaws these first 3 episodes and all of my fellow Buffy fans noticed in our discussion after this aired.The ultra cool swagger of Spike is not just gone but replaced with a melancholy vampire living with regret. Not sad about the thousands he has killed like Angel but about not keeping his promise to Buffy. No other show does that to its 3 fan favorites but BTVS does and with style.

    I love Willow, but to me she was selfish to expect Buffy to say thank you ! They all were to bring her back.
    Buffy chose to jump instead of Dawn. She chose to die. And they know the first slayer told her death was her gift, she said it. Then Buffy talked to Dawn and told her to tell her friends things... It was her decision. So to bring her back anyway, and expect a thank you from the person that DID NOT want to be brought back... That's selfish. With everything we know, and they know. With the fact that they hid the resurrection from Giles, Spike and Dawn... I think that says it all. I love the scoobies, but they were wrong to do what they did. Assuming Buffy was in hell made no sense to me ! I never believed she was, even before they brought her back. Because why would she ? Angel went through the hell portal he created, that's why he was in hell. But his body went with him. Buffy's stayed on earth and looked like she was at peace. There is a lot of other things that made me think she was in heaven, not hell, even before those episodes. But... I'll end it there XDD

    Ahhh I am so happy you're back to watching Buffy again! I can't wait to see your reactions to the last two seasons, six is so emotional (as you can already see) and season 7 I had on DVD growing up so it's one of my favourites for nostalgic reasons! I was wondering if you've ever thought of reacting to Charmed?? It's another fantastic supernatural show from the 90's and A LOT of Buffy fans overlap with Charmed fans! I think you'd really like it!

    When I first saw this episode, and especially the last scene, I said, "Ohhhhhh shit." I had no idea how they'd bring her back, I figured there might be consequences, but I hadn't thought about the possibility that she might have been in heaven. Bring on the complications!

  • @pjcornelius
    @pjcornelius Před 13 dny +1

    It amazes me that Willow and to a lesser extent the others would just assume that Buffy was in hell. They should have at least considered the possibility that she was in heaven given that she died sacrificing her life to save the world (again). I think Willow was just being selfish, wanting her friend back despite the potential consequences or even what it might mean for Buffy herself, and refusing to even listen to conflicting arguments.

    I think you touched on the real power of BtVS in general. In spite of all the silly monsters and crazy magics, the actors and the scripts make it seem strangely real. Too real, maybe. I still feel my heart get stabbed at too many scenes in that show. And the entirety of "The Body", of course.

  • @kristinebautz1859
    @kristinebautz1859 Před 12 dny +1

    I think willow left the group out of the loop with what this spell could do to them and or Buffy on purpose. I wondered in the past if it was denial and just wanted Buffy bad so badly she didnt care. It could even be a mixture of both. We are getting major scenes of Dark Willow.
    I find it so heartbreaking the scoobies immediately expect Buffy to be her normal self but want a thank you as well. No matter where she came from, she just came back to the world and they expect her to bounce back in a day? It's crazy.
    I love this season personally. It's a grown up season dealing with depression, anxiety and addiction. Its dark but i love the big bad of the season: adulting.

    • @fanmagicks
      @fanmagicks Před 11 dny +2

      I think they expect her to bounce back because they really don't see her as a person. They have this idolized version of her in their heads & damn if they don't get mad/angry if she doesn't live up to it.
      Willow was there when Angel broke her heart for a second time at the end of s3. But just like in the beginning s3, she pushed Buffy towards Scott even tho Buffy clearly wasn't ready. So in college she pushed her to be w/Poophead Parker, then with Riley.
      Xander keeps her on a pedestal until she shows him she's human with real emotions & he turns ugly and twists the knife verbally until she goes back to that pedestal like a good girl. It all goes back to her choosing Angel over him. He's got a bitter streak that really shows in certain episodes (DMP) anyone?
      Willow wanting to be thanked ALWAYS irks me. She didn't want Buffy back for the sake of Buffy, she wanted The Slayer back and to prove how powerful she's become. The writers really laid the groundwork in the early seasons showing her ego/selfishness getting worse the older she gets.

    Since I was a kid in sunday school I wondered how was life for Lazarus after he was raised from the dead after 4 days? - even the disciples warned Jesus, "but, he Stinketh!" Have you ever considered doing reaction to "Twin Peaks" in the future? If you like Buffy, I really think you might like "Twin Peaks." It's a funny, witty, and quirky show from the 90s (with some very dark elements), which inspired so many other (and bigger) television series--including "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." Joss once claimed that it was one of his biggest inspirations.

  • @oldbroadwithbaggage5472

    Great reaction. I totally agree with everyone about Willow and the others bringing Buffy back was selfish. They made a bad assumption. They created a hitch hiker and had to deal with that. It sucked that Buffy was at peace and happy and had to come back to the horrors of earth. Sadly I always felt like they didn't really have a choice. Demons were taking over the town, the hellmouth was gaining a serious foothold on earth, and there was no other slayer coming to save the day. Faith is locked up some where and the Watchers Counsel doesn't seem to letting her out. No new slayer was activated because Buffy died quite some time ago and her replacement was activated, Kendra. Faith was actived when Kendra died. So who exactly has the strength and power to save not just Sunnydale, but most likely all of California, at the very least? I just never saw any other way. Life sucks for Buffy, Willow should have been more forthcoming with possible consequences, but other help wasn't ever going to be coming as far as Willow could see. So I kind of get why Willow didn't want to know where Buffy actually was, I'm sure she convinced herself it was for the greater good, and I'm not sure she wasn't right. (If I'm going to analyze this great show on the logic of real life that is. 😊)
