Hello to everyone who's subscribed since the last series and has absolutely no idea what's going on. Three shows, over three Thursdays: one about skill, one about mental agility, and one plain old-fashioned quiz. Back to the Garage we go.
Zeroth!
Hi
For once, Tom hasn't commented a fortnight in advance.
True
Funny as
I wish I could be as excited to be myself as dodie is excited to be dodie
Don't underestimate how excited is Daniel about chaos at 9:30
I don't know you, and that means that at this point in time, i still love you.
I am!
Took so long to find the me that I could be excited about; but feeling happier to be me and more excited to be me with each lassing day.
I mean... I would also be excited about being dodie.
Just decide to be...
My favourite thing about the game garage other than the hilarity is the how quickly friends will turn on each other for ten whole pounds
I think you mean ONE THOUSAND pence.

“Don’t hate the player, hate the game.”

It's the only good response to that silly false aphorism.

things i've learnt watching this:
- sammy is a meanie when it comes to a tenner
- daniel j layton is very supportive
- dodie looks great in a wallpaper crown
- reb day has a lot of hidden talents

Tom is a madman.
sammy knows too much about my little pony
Its so weird that I get so invested in these games. Its so low-stakes, no production value, but so damn riveting its amazing.
Game shows really don't need high production values. They appeal to our sense of competition, and the friendly banter adds to it (at least for me).
It’s cos they’re real people
All these game shows have been doing it wrong. Turns out all you really need is ten pounds and people will jump at each other’s throats to get it. XD
All these game shows have been doing it wrong. Turns out all you really need is ten pounds and people will jump at each other’s throats to get it. XD
@@cartoonishidealism582 Even if the production values are comparatively low (what really costs money is live sports broadcasting, or news) they can afford a cash price (or even better a sponsored price) of a million dollars per hour because the studio and the people around costs more than that anyway. And the contestants are not really paid unless they win. A talk show with invited guests the guest either have something to sell, or they will require money to be there, and that is a lot of money for a well known face.
The way she screamed, "DODIE!" made me smile

Tom, if you ever do get proper funding for a game show. Please keep the garage aesthetic. It makes it feel more like something people could do at home.
Like the premise behind Minute to Win It
I'm gonna do this with my friends once quarantine is over
16:36 "They are not professional quality speed-stacking cups."

*psst* people, I already watch the show, no need for recommendations
Ah. A thread full of other individuals of culture. Nice.
It's like prisoner's dilemma. They could take their time and make one person easily do any task without competition for 100 quid and then split 25 each :)
Well, unless you betray the entire friendship and keep the 100, which is definitely a part of the prisoner's dilemma.
Ah but where's the fun in that? I don't care about the money, I care about showing my friends how superior I am at mundane tasks. THEY SHALL TREMBLE BEFORE MY CUP STACKING ABILITIES!
Then it's not a fun game, ultimately defeating the purpose.
SECONDQUEST wait, what? The purpose is to be a “fun game”‽ I thought the purpose was to be compelling content that lots and lots of people watch, like, and share. The audience might have fun watching, and certainly the contestants appearing to have fun while playing can help with the objective as stated, but fun is only relevant to the degree that fun (or lack thereof) increases audience engagement. I would be quite curious to see if an episode of “game garage” where the contestants broke the game (such as by colluding to get the 100£) might actually get much higher engagement precisely because of it being a kind of “fail.” Would depend very much on how Tom handled it I suspect.
There was actually a case during the game show "golden balls" where a similar situation happened...
The scenario is that two contestants have the a prize pool of about £20,000 (give or take based on what happened in the show) and have two options they can pick in secret. Split or Steal.
If both contestants split, the money is split 50/50
If one contestant splits and the other steals, the stealer take all
And if both steal they both walk away with nothing
The contestants are given a minute to discuss with each other. In one infamous case one contestant opens discussion with "I am going to steal, you cannot change my mind, you choose split and we will meet up after the show and share the cash."
I won't spoil the ending but the episode is on CZcams somewhere but since I am on iPad I can't link it.
I love how it feels like each of these feel like they was specific tasks destined for each of them. Reb, the lace wizard and chalice stacker. Dodie, the ball master. Sammy, the puzzle mage. Dan,,, great,,,cheerleader.
Elana Raybould ball master
The way Sammy just yelled *'CAPITALISM'* at the end.

Low-key narcissism callout.
This game really needs for the players to be unable to see the clock.
Originally, I thought it was poor game design, that the players would just wait out their personal best each time, lowering stakes.
However, since they can't see the clock, having the players either wait to give themselves more time or shorting themselves of precious seconds becomes a really captivating dynamic.
It'd read better visually if the clock were added in post, rather than being physically in the room visible to the camera. It's a little odd that there's something being displayed in the room that nobody can see until they watch the video.
@@iabervon The clock in the room is for the studio audience. Well, garage audience. 😉

Why isn't Tom using the Japanese version of Game Garage for this Any% run
Yacob Gugsa his CZcams channel is region locked
GDQ donation incentive
There's a PAL-exclusive cup physics glitch that's faster
Cooldrew100 PAL is better in theory. However, in absence of perfect textbox mashing, you tend to save more time in the Japanese version, due to just how dialogue-heavy the route is. As Tom is certainly not a TAS, and coupled with the more finicky inputs (leading to dropping human inputs more often), Japanese is favorable. Yes, an extremely skilled runner could force the WR below the limits of the Japanese version, but it’s equally likely, if not more so, that new skips and exploits are discovered in favor of the Japanese version (given the small community of runners, that is).
So it's a quest for TEN THOUSAND PENCE now. Still sounds more impressive than 100 quid.
Ten billion micro-pence.
