You should start a new "T90 does LEL strats" series. We'll see you do stuff like this, play sims like Darkelf, make Onion Walls, etc and do your best to make it all work as well as possible while also legitimately trying to win the game (so like how here you couldn't fully hard commit to the elephants and had to actually play the game) and basically show us what these LEL's could be with high level game understanding, micro, and macro.
What you were missing is the TC in the middle of your wood cut down by the ballista elephants
I think you'd have been better going and cutting the "neutral" woods first, or at least 1 of them, and then attempting to control the second one, before going for opponent. Would give you more time to build up a mass, less likely to be spotted so quick, and be quicker to cut his woodline. Also I was expecting you to take the trees out all along, rather than going straight to the centre.

You really rely on a long game then though. once the enemy has fortified one of the wood-islands, its basically enough for almost all game.
Just look at this game here. Even at the end the enemy has almost half his main plateau full of trees still, even though T90 destroyed quite a lot of trees. T90 himself also still has more than enough trees.
The only way to get any value out of this is to make sure there is no way for the enemy to take one of the "neutral" trees, while destroying a lot of the trees asap on the main wood.
But in the end its a troll strategy, so on this level you will prob never really get any value from doing this :D
@@4everdex the only way this could work is in a super long game. It's probably not the sort of thing you plan from the start, just something to think about if the game naturally goes that way.
i saw that wood chop island game by daut years ago. and i still think about how he bought wood at the market to make the price go up. what a big brain move
How about clearing the area in the middle of his wood to build your own castle instead of giving the perfect castle spot to the opponent? As you control the complete forest with that one castle there is no need to take down all the trees and you can switch focus on the other forests.
Probably difficult to get the eco working for that. You need the stone for the first castle to produce Ballista Elephants, then resources to produce them and then enough stone for the castle drop.

I remember watching the tree removal game live on twitch and asking you to try it out at your ELO, so glad you did! The ending was a heartbreaker but it was cool to see the idea play out.
The takeaway here should be that your primary goal was to deny wood but he got more of it than you did.

edit: sadly the lel player did it better.
When you want to erase the trees, you don't bloody create a path to his cutters so he can see...you eliminate ALL the trees close and you advance line by line, so that when he sees your progress, everything by that place is gone.
I'm craving a masterpiece of this where the opponent resigns because they have no more trees to chop
I don’t play AOE2 myself but I’m hooked on your videos - one thing that strike me in this game and several other games: why not have 1 or 2 villagers building palisades or stone walls just to deny the perfect location castle drop from opponents. In this instance in the forest (if you’d thought about it) and in other instances on top of hills, or at crucial resources, so it will be much more difficult for the opponent to place them. Just a few blocks of walls here and there to make placing a castle impossible. Has anyone else thought of this or tried it?

I think a big issue with this not working is you showed your hand far too early, and as you said you didnt have any archers to handle the eagles. Id love to see this done against Hardest/Extreme AI if its not in Ranked anymore

I think the biggest mistake was diving with the elephants and trying to take out trees and villagers asap. An approach towards denying trees in the long term would have been harder to deal with at your ELO.
Try this instead. Cut a spot for a castle on the corner of the wood square opposite of what is being chopped by your opponent. So that the castle fire covers most of the tree square. Drop a 2nd castle at around 17:00 in this video on that spot and then use that castle as the fallback point for your elephants.
Your opponent in this video wouldn't have known what to do. He'd have to shift focus towards trying to take out the castle while you systematically start obliterating trees.

The trees spawn in a 8 or 9 tile radius so you could save time cutting a single line into each of the 3 other treelines and building a tower in the middle. They would counter with their own tower so you'd need guard tower afterward. In theory it cuts them off from wood way earlier.
I thought you were going to hollow out the center of the tree clusters, and bring in ranged units or build towers(castles kind of expensive) in the defensible middle sections so no wood can be gathered from the entire cluster until the opponent defeats your military there. But to optimally defeat your military the opponent would need wood in the first place, forcing them into a sub-optimal military composition and approach. Instead I think you just got too greedy in the short term to kill 5 enemy villagers that you lost the long term gain of denying the entire woodline for the rest of the game.

Issue is the timing, Khmer is the only civ able to do it in castle age.

I actually once won exacty this map by cutting all wood on his side. After the market prices got insane he surrendered ^^

SpiritOfTheLaw could compare those like he did for the Siege Onager\Siege Engineers video, but I feel you would have gotten a *lot* more value out of the Elite upgrade. I believe the extra bolts do like halved damage and ended up doing 1 damage.

@t90 I don’t play professionally but a thing I noticed now multiple times is that external gold sources like here, did play a crucial role. So I was wondering why you or others never palisade them in. Costs you what? 30 wood? And you get a notification / can directly see if the opponent is trying to get it.
If I would play multiplayer, I would probably send in feudal a single villager out to do that. I mean, you even had multiple times a villager walk around building docks
What you’re suggesting is a good idea, it’s just a very specific click & focus point which is tricky with 150 other things happening a minute. Would have helped!
the main reason is that the villager going out to do that is too big a risk and usually too time consuming
I often times send one Vill in Feudal to an neutral gold and let him wall himself in so that the enemy scout can't get him instantly.
Gives you a bit of an advantage and doesn't take too much time to focus on tbh.

@@Boj-Anivia that is still a lot of idle time, its basically having one less vill working then ur opponent which can be a disaster in fuedal...mebe in late game its more exusable
@@T90Official That's an interesting PoV and I might agree after looking at so many videos now. But that statement mostly only applies to early game or? Which throws up two other questions for me. a) Would placing an outpost "directly in" the gold and walling it with palisdes not only take like 5 seconds? Like 35 Wood and 5 stone / quick walling. And you always have an eye (or get an alarm sound) if the enemy gets near it. And obviously question b) Considering the risk for villager GROUPS is significantly *smaller* early in the game (as a single scout can't kill two vils attacking him back) wouldn't it be smarter to ignore your starter gold or stone and go for the one a bit further out and that way have a safe one, later on? Sure, there are the initial seconds that it takes the vils to get there and the 100 wood for a camp but the camp is often build anyway.

I like this strat but the fact that you have to target each tree individually just makes it so much worse. It'd be cool if by just attacking one elephants started attacking other trees

i think you pointed out the real problem: it takes too much effort for your ballistas to remove trees.
against a competent opponent, this strategy should not work.

I've done this strat with siege on ager over 20 years ago, not sure why T90 is so surprised by it really.. with Khmer you use elephants, only difference
