Kadett Superboss: We build our very own SA classic

- Following what was probably the most public restoration that any Opel Kadett Superboss had ever been subjected to, our "project 1" is now a regular runner, and highly addictive joy to drive. But why did we acquire and restore one in the first place?
When the Cars.co.za journey started about 10 years ago, it began as an online classifieds, designed to put dealer stock in front of as many likely car buyers as possible. This it did very successfully, but roughly 5 years ago, the decision was made to add content, to assist consumers in making more informed purchasing decisions. This too, has worked very effectively, and with projects like our automated New Car Buyer's Guide and Cars.co.za Consumer Awards - Powered by WesBank, we are able to engage with car buyers at every stage of the decision-making process. It's all very "cerebral".
But for many at Cars.co.za, cars are a passion. And through our engagement with our audience, the perception that a great many South Africans are car enthusiasts has only been reinforced. And so SentiMETAL was born in 2017, to celebrate that love that exists for a machine that continues to change the world, more than 100 years after the first of them turned a wheel. The SentiMETAL video series allowed us to engage with passionate car owners, and the deeper we became embedded in the classic car community, the more we wanted to be a permanent part of it. But there are also responsibilities...
South Africa has a very rich, very diverse automotive heritage, but so many of our cars are leaving the country or left to rot, uncelebrated. Many of the legends that built these cars are no longer with us, too, and their stories also need to be told. So, for us, SentiMETAL may be a passion project, but it's also one we take very seriously. Our collection started with the car in the video above, a 1992 Opel Kadett 2.0 GSi Superboss. We are possibly the 7th owners of this car, and when we discovered it, it was in a sad state. Restorer Werner Meyer was convinced, however, that it was of the right pedigree, but had just been terribly neglected through the years. What followed was a complete nuts-and-bolts restoration, but retaining as many of the original parts of the car as possible.
The story of this Superboss is one of a "rescue". In many ways, it's like a top pedigree, thoroughbred horse that was found neglected and which has been slowly brought back to its proper condition. Seeing something evolve from a basketcase in a barn, to it standing next to R30 million Mercedes-Benz's at Concours South Africa was emotional for all of us. Enjoy the film!

This is quite literally my dream car!!! I was 6 years old and my dad bought a black one fresh from the factory. I am a DIEHARD Opel fan so thanks for the video!!!!!!
Did your Dad do advanced driver training before driving it. I heard you had to do this before driving it off the showroom floor.
Thanks for keeping our history alive!
Why dont you guys bring this legend back ?
@@howzieza7170 that's what the opc range is. Opel south Africa would need to homologate a new production car for track racing if they wanted to create a new "superboss" as that's what the superboss was.
Hi. I live overseas for 20 years and i will always remember that SUPER BOSS. I still love that car. Good work thank you.
I use to own a white "89 model 8v with digital clocks...I use to smoke big zol splifs and get super gerook and go for long drives at night from Pe to Jeffreys...wish I could buy her back again..my reg was DYK 371 EC , she had a fantastic 2nd into 3rd pull
in the mid-late 90s here in the UK I owned a GTE 8V and then a GTE 16V. Great memories and great to see this Superboss video, nice job.
Hi there my name is Phineas i have Opel Kadett 1997 i love these cars keep up the great job thanx
I should've bought that superboss in 2004 when I had the money - to my regret today. Today they go for an arm and a leg... Very collectable...
Haaawu bafwethu ❤️❤️❤️❤️GSi SUPERBOSS aka iGUNDANE(pronounced Goon-Nduh-Neh) which is Zulu for MOUSE coz of its diminutive size... this car used to be the sh!t in the 90’s,my late uncle had one(ice white with Black Rims) that we used to call SHERBET named after that sweet powdery stuff we chowed as kids...one thing I loved and stood out the most was the digitalized 288 Top Speed that illuminated on the speedometer when the key was in the ignition as it was switched on.😍😍
You had the SUPERBOSS,MK2 GOLF GTi 16v,BMW 325is/BMW E12 528i, 535i,CHEVROLET 4100/REKORD,FORD LAZER EGi,TOYOTA CONQUEST RSi TWINCAM 16v and NISSAN SENTRA COUPE EFi as the most iconic cars in the streets of Soweto back then.
Thank you for taking us back with this classic icon.
✌🏿🇿🇦😉
Anyone who grew up in the hood in the late 80’s and early 90’s will vouch for these cars as the most iconic of the epoch.
Wow
Awesome video and thumbs up on the restoration.
Great work guys. A lovely car for sure.
One of my personal favourites is the Opel Kadett 200ts. I dreamt of making one of these my first car back in the late 90's, though it never happened.
Yip the 2.o ts was also one of my favourites, but the bloody gearbox never lasted.I had one but in red 1996 but the car had way too many issues and i got rid of it.
Ahhh once owned an 1990 opel/astra mk2 3 door 1.8 sri in exact same colour.
Did nearly 200,000 miles on original clutch & gearbox and used no oil at all.
Best car ever owned in 30 years of car ownership.
G304 EAJ.
Super rare now and not seen another example exact same.
This 2.0 16v first to have sodium cooled valves on a vauxhall/opel.
My engine derives from this an 1999 astra sri 2.0 3 door with 111 left on the road with probably 20-30 red ones left in the UK.(:-)
Kadett superboss is the king.(:-)
Long ago, I flew one down Golf Club Terrace in Roodepoort (it became airborne for quite a while there.... hahaha) , it's an amazing car! Thís one, is a job very well done guys. Hats off to everyone involved in this very intense rebuild, well done guys
This is GREAT I feel super proud to be South African right now I love the car. This is a great initiative that CARS has undertaken I would love to have seen more of the process though
BUT...
A Twincam...
Please restore a 1992 Toyota Corolla GLi Twincam Executive ..
Totally love your video and most of all the car featured please make more video's like this...watched it over and over just to see the car in action
This is an amazing story, the history of our very own car model in sa.❤
Beautiful lovely car wonderful restoration well done
Every Sa car guy loves the Superboss
Opels have always done it a bit differently. At times infuriatingly temperamental, when on song they're simply sublime. Being the proud owner of a beastly Astra TwinTop fettled by the best in the business, I feel proud to see that classic and rare Opels still conjure up passion and respect. Something for the enthusiasts!
Nearly bought one of these in the '90s, glad sanity prevailed and I ended up with a reliable Japanese car.
Yup. Card board box with a racing motor
I am a die hard VW fan - I will even concede, this car is an icon and absolutely killed the Golf in its day - though the Wolfsburg item was better built.
35 years ago every odd radio advert in SA was promoting the Opel Kadett 'T' Car.
Still to find out what the 'T' represented, however congratulations on this fantastic restoration.
Nice work, boys! Very nice work.
This part of the channel is heading towards petrolicious standards - and there’s no higher praise.
Hkk ukil
Stunning, i think that car can hold its own against the best of them, Good Job😉💜
Awesome.
I miss myne, had one, but the 8 valve with digital guages, what a legend of a car
When you show that engine I had fight the tears! I had another car with that engine. The Opel Astra 200iE. Never should have sold it. Power and economy and a lovely drivers car. I still miss it after nearly 20 years.
Thanks for a great channel.
I must say after 22yrs it's shape is still pleasing to the eye!
GSI worldwide legend...was and stay !
I had one of those GSi with same engine but in color black . I also had BMW Serie 5, 7 with monster engines , but must tell you , GSi was my FAVORITE car . Simple , not many gadgets and accessories , cheap maintenance , good MPG for sport car . imho Opels best engine ever made . Not many modern cars can beat GSi in everyday commute for sure . My friend had one with Turbo Kit but very modest look from outside . We use to "kill" every BMW , Audi , and other muscle cars on the road .
Remember dominating the street lights in my '91 GTI...until a Super Boss pulled up. Respect for a car way ahead of its time 👍
Nice job...I owned a GSi 8v for a very very short time, mainly because it broke down more than I drove it...If it was more reliable, I could have been an Opel fan...
My Dad Has A Mint Opel Superboss In The Same Condition You Guys Have Your Superboss In.....What A Car.
10/10, keep it up guys :)
As an Vw and audi drag and track racer myself, there is no doudt, the Superboss is a total Icon..... Even when I was in matric in '92 myself and the car boys already knew😁

Как бывший владелец Кадета, я просто обязан поставить лайк в знак уважения моей бывшей!
You guys are world class. Will do everything to visit your workdshop. Kudos.
Beautiful car and an amazing endeavour to protect SA motor heritage
Hey Werner. Well done boet. Best regards Peter Hamilton
This is a classic. It has inspired me to take on a classic project. To restore another icon the opel Astra 2OOts back to its original. I have car no. 71. We will also log our build in detail. Opens in that era were considered serious competition to the BMW. Not sure where hey feature today when compared to BMW. So we are going to build another south african legend....the Astra 200Ts
Hi there, keep us up to date on your restoration! Check out cars.co.za/shop for our contact details. You'll probably also like this video on our channel, VW Golf VR6 vs Opel Astra 200ts czcams.com/video/EaArM9UaJtQ/video.html
My dream car...
With such an engine and improved suspension...
How much does it cost to do such a restoration? Because in the future I want to restore conquest not the tazz shape the iron shape.
I wonder what is the other three legend cars they have in mind to rebuilt, fingers cross it's the gli Twincam exec or ford cortina xr6 team ford or interceptor or could be da 333i!
Beautiful, im a bit pedantic .. the left front light isnt aligned perfectly... but it has been beautifully restored.
So asking for the DS reverse retro built up will be too much to ask
Pappa!!!!!!Eish, die Baas. The Boss of Bosses in the 90tees.VW Golf/Jetta 2.0 16v eat your heart out. This was it.Robot to robot was and still is "auf wieder sehen und tschüß"( vau weh VW).When this car sees the road, all it want"s to do is to get it over and done with.Excellent restoration job, respect to you guys. How much does this "ruby"cost💶💳?because i like,i want😎it.
It would be interesting to know what happend to all of those group n race cars where did they all go? Mike Briggs car and the rest.
Anyone else with an OPEL KADETT GSE 1992 ?
so what was different in the 'superboss' version over the 'standard' Kadett GSI/Astra GTE?
Pete Lattimer “The Superboss was a uniquely South African car, and was essentially a Group N version of the Big Boss, with special Schrick 276* camshafts, an ECU that was modified by Promotec which had a different map and rev limit, a Coscast head (although not all Superbosses’ had this), a 4-into-1 performance header, an LSA1 airbox and a performance airfilter, a BroSpeed exhaust system, and an F20 transmission with an LSD. On the exterior front, it was 10mm lower, featured 15”X 7J Aluett wheels, and other non-performance related bits like factory rolled rear wheel arches, GSI 16V embroided on the front seats, and air ducting on the front bumper”
@@jgcvdw1932 only 500 made and held the world record for most Nm per liter of 114Nm till Ferrari 458 broke that record .

Awesome build, and K&N are a top air filter. But i think the sticker looks tacky stuck to the airbox.
That is how they came originally.
@@brandenvandermerwe5352 it's how they still come.
Hey chaps, well done on the restoration and I really do love the passion behind the build. Im sure there was no compromise behind the build, BUT....... at the end of the day its still really just an Opel Kadett, with the built in periodic non-start????????

All thanks to that Cosworth Motor
Only the Coscast cylinder head
South African improved
Opel Kadett south african heritage!?
It is a 100% German car, only the aspect of "Superboss" isn't german.
The GSi 16V was already developed in germany, too.
Superboss has unique bits compared to the GTE astra and Euro Kadett.
We also had the euro spec Kadett 2.0 in South Africa, but the Superboss was uniquely South African.
Whatever!
Please do a restoration on the 1991 mk2 gti 16v executive
vdub and toy owners can say what they want but secretly they also want to own a superboss.
Like being a child all over again!... Needs a personalised number plate! TENDER1 GP = "Tender" (synonym for sentimental) and then the next one TENDER2 GP.
Izak Botes you will confuse some local pepols- eish your tender must have been very small shem you could only buy opel of more than twenty years age! Me I’m bought the G-wagon with my tender 😂
@@127834 hahahah to be honest I didn't even think of that ... that's quite sharp! Lol!
Vauxhall Astra gte (London edition)??
I am looking for one .
Aka.. Mk2 astra GTE 16v.
Soooo much better and faster than the golf gti.
They just had crap standard suspension.
Set of coilovers and throttle body's and these are Awsome cars.
Ye, much the same as a GTE, but is up 15bhp and equipped with race bits from the factory. I was surprised how good this car actually in real life.
@@madsciencebuilds
Vauxhall/Opal Gte's and Gsi's where very good.
They just never had the suspension to match the performance.
The C20XE engine is one of the best 4 cylinder engines ever made.
Just hard to find a good one in the UK now.
Stryker Superboss > This.
A rare 90s car that you should realy concider to fueture is the mazda 323 200i 16v dohc.this is a forfotten car and no one want to feuture it.please
