  • I was amazed at the detail work that went into this van. They said about 3000 to 4000 hours went into design and labor towards the van. Very thought out for the entire build as you can see from start to finish of this video.

    **They SOLD their van!!! Congrats to them but I know they will be working on some new cool projects so I'll be sure to keep in touch with them.**
    For everyone calling BS on Ethan saying there's 3000+ hours into the build please remember as a builder we calculate 2 people working a 8 hour day as 16 labor hours, so keep that in mind. Also it's design and building.
    Sorry about the noise interference. It wasn't my cell phone but I'm assuming it was some electrical equipment inside the van messing with my camera.

      @Dave McGraw I'm sure the majority of those hours were spent scratching their heads trying to figure out how and what they were going to do next. Now they know how to do it and I'll bet the construction time would be dramatically reduced. Everything is always harder the first time you do it, and it gets easier with repetition.

    • @G-ra-ha-m
      @G-ra-ha-m Před 5 lety +8

      As noted it's too labour intensive, $120k could reduce to $30k with careful planning but there are overheads like a workshop, supplies etc, then you have to buy the van too. On top of that you are competing with the european brands with their CAD designed laser cut CNC interiors which are not as good (or stealth) as this exceptional DIY/Semi-pro job - but for around €45k you can buy the complete ready made van from Globecar, Hymer/Burstner, Knaus/Weinsberg, Adria etc: czcams.com/video/eihcyEijPVA/video.html
      Stealth would be added by choosing a flush window option and covering with some vinyl wrap stickers.
      Europe is WAY ahead of the US manufacturers in this van size.

    • @David-rx2to
      @David-rx2to Před 5 lety +3

      @Graham €45k is a little over $50k US. I followed the link you provided and I find it hard to believe the van in the video is available new for €45k. That same chassis is used as the basis for several RV conversions by large US RV companies and they are priced, depending on the features selected, at $100k+. That price is MSRP, so some dealing might get you a 20% discount from there.
      winnebagoind.com/product-classes/class-b
      How can European manufacturers sell a van like the one in the video for less than half what a similar one costs here? A bare bones cargo van with nothing inside is going to cost high $30k's to low $40k's, so I can't see a build out to compete with the one in the video only costing $5-$10k more. You suggest the van in this video could possibly be replicated for about $30k...I might go along with that depending on how the son and his father value their time...but, $40k for a bare cargo van plus another $30k for the features in this van...I'd say that represents a fair deal vs what you might get for an "off the lot" $70k RV. (in the US)
      EDIT: I followed the link in another comment and the owners of this van are asking $85,000 US...so, assuming the bare cargo van cost $40k, they value the materials and labor they have done @ $45k US...but, they have 4000 hours of work in this one. I'm assuming, since everything gets easier the more you do it, they might be willing to replicate this build for less than $45k if they would consider going into the business.

    • @G-ra-ha-m
      @G-ra-ha-m Před 5 lety +5

      @@brandonbakhtiar7451 As Power P = I x V this means for the same power, the higher the voltage = the lower the current. Current is what heats up the wires and gets the batteries and connectors warm. So 36V reduces the current by 3 times. Power lost in a wire = I x I x R, so 1/3rd current = 1/9th power lost in the wires.
      If you do that you need a step down float charger for the 12V van battery for the 12V stuff and a step up battery for the vehicle charging of the 36V pack. If you do this you need to keep the ground wires of each system isolated as the step up and step down DC-DC converters use the ground output as the current sense: ignoring it means the converters overload and die. Correctly wired (one at a time, 12V isolated from 36V ground) they work well.

Just to add some thoughts of my own. One of the tubes along the roof line could hold a rolling awning to create a nice covered outdoor space. I would try to have the entire kitchen set up on the sliding door side of the van. Maybe a slightly smaller sink with a counter that would fold down over top of it. Have the cook top on the counter that folds up by the door or use a portable cook top that can be stowed.. I would use the space between the oversized (love it) shower and the drivers seat for a lounge area with a folding table. Move the rear solar panels forward a bit on the roof and put in a skylight above the bed. Move the video monitor to the lounge area.

Bedroom height would be much better with a smaller garage I'm guessing.

      OR they could raise the roof. Seen it done by a lady on CZcams. She said she got a company to do it before she started her renovations. I think they were a fibreglass company that works on boats.

      Also, if you are starting from scratch with a conversion, they sell Sprinters factory made with the higher roof. Honestly, if I was going to be making the investment in a Sprinter, which are so expensive, I would just buy the high roof automatically. Just so much more comfortable and livable-worth the money. Where I live a lot of contractors have Sprinters and at least half have the raised roof.

    I love this van, i saw it on Craigslist and have been obsessed with looking at it for the past week. Just watched the video because it popped up in my reccomendations! Im hoping no one buys it before my fathers house sells 🤞🤞🤞 i start full time nursing school soon (3years) im a single mom, going through a divorce, my father just passed tragically, and i need to get my life and love for the outdoors back again. i want to teach my son to hunt, camp, fish, and ride bikes just like my father showed me 🙂🤗 good job on this van and the craftsmanship that was put into it! if i miss out on getting this one i hope to see more made in the future!

    Jarrod, I'd like to THANK YOU for keeping these short; I've tried to (very nicely) tell other channels that theirs are way too loooong, and that I'd unsub if he couldn't shorten them from over an hour. I got nasty remarks from others and him, so I did unsub. I appreciate how you give us IMPORTANT INFO, NOT blabbing about every piece of Tupperware of pan or shirt or even THE PEOPLES' UNDERWEAR & which drawer they're kept in - NO exaggeration, their underwear, and showed them!!!! Not my loss; your gain, Sir!!!!

    Amazing van! So few people do the double floor for ducting and insulation purposes. I like the spray foam insulation, little worried about what I've read about off gassing but can't argue with the R value. I've never heard about using a dog kennel AC to cool the sleeping space in a van, next level idea here! I would only use it when I sleep so why not? I wonder how long the AC can run off the batteries on average? Why are they possibly selling? I'm guessing you sit while you shower? Why not, I guess. I really like the garage and how they enclosed the bed area with its own window. I'm starting to see some vans with solar panels that can work underneath the roof rack and or slide out horizontally once you reach a camp site to allow for full use of the rack. If you see this, please do a video! 40 gallon water tank is amazing and the sink is huge. Thanks for this incredible DIY build conversion!

    • @JarrodTocci
      @JarrodTocci  Před 5 lety +1

      Thank you. The AC I'd have to look up but if it runs off 350watts then you'd have to do the math on how many amp hours your batteries are and you can tell if it can run all night. I'm sure it's on a thermostat and it cycles on and off which helps a little bit
