I think it's because he was genuinely doing it for Freddie and his friends who passed and one of his close friend who went into a coma that day of the tribute. Prayers sound sincere when they are actually sincere.

Such a courageous guy who did what he thought was right. He was a true giant in so many ways. Very sorry he left this world too early. We miss him.

I am sad to hear a few negative comments here for David doing that. One thing people liked and hoped for Bowie was his freedom of expression. And if he wanted to express freely he feelings through a prayer which I believe was done in honour and respect, suddenly it's a bad thing? I believe it was giving a gift and also something the audience could give together with him and each other. I think he was a deep and sincere man.

As David walks away from the audience he raises his microphone as if to toast Freddie, he is visibly holding back from tearing; I hadn't noticed before, usually I tear the moment he starts the prayer. I will have to look to see if they had a signal.
I was at the concert at the very back at the top in the rafters and after an awesome day of singalongs you could hear the traffic outside it was an awesome moment.

David bowie is my role-model and idol, and in my opinion it doesn't matter weather he has faith or not. His friend passed away, he prayed for him. It's a nice, respectful thing to do regardless of whether he is christian or not.
