- The music of Sam Phillips unfolds like perfect, miniature pop dramas. Her album, "Don't Do Anything," is loaded with great ones. Of all her incarnations as a performer - first as a Christian singer, then as a pop singer - the current Sam Phillips is one of the most alluring. In this Tiny Desk performance, recorded live at the desk of All Songs Considered host Bob Boilen, Phillips performs four songs from "Don't Do Anything."

I have been a fan of Sam Phillips when she was called Leslie in the 80s. Her first mind-blowing pop-folk album for me was The Turning, still one of my favorites. I lost touch with her work and then stumbled on her again watching The Gilmore Girls. I had a whole set of albums to catch up with and fall in love with. She has always had a powerful voice, powerful songwriting and a perspective that is always worth hearing. She has been central in my musical education. Thank you, Sam, for persisting.
I discovered Sam Phillips through the glorious soundtracks of "Gilmore Girls" and started with buying "The Indescribable Wow" on vinyl. Fell madly in love and haven't stopped since! Thanks so much for the amazing music!
1:40 - Sister Rosetta Goes Before Us
4:30 - No explanations
8:52 - Signal
14:40 - Little Plastic Life
✨✨✨
GILMORE GIRLS forever!
I knew her through MTV's 120 Minutes back in the 90's. I fell hypnotized by "I Need Love", a couple of years later I was able to catch "Martinis & Bikinis" on cassette format. It remains as one of my favourite albums to this day.
Her voice is amazing & this performance is pure gold!!!! Regards from Mexico.
Leslie, the vessel that was used to preserve a little girl from So Cal, me...thank you so much....joyous are the foundations that keep the house standing through the storms.....
I have just discovered Sam Phillips. I am so happy.
Thank you NPR. Thank you Sam.
Discovered her in 85 with "Love is not lost" while studying in the US.
Never looked back since.
I have all of her stuff, including a playlist i made on my phone with 28 of her songs, playlist i listen to at least a couple of times a month.
"Private Storm" remains my favorite song, right before "5 colors" , "I Need Love" and "Love Is Not Lost".
Thank you Leslie/Sam for countless hours of simple (but profound) pleasure when there were so little in my life.
Namaste

Yes - Private Storm.
Love Sam Phillips - one of my favorite songwriters and that voice!
Loaded up Shazam app during a gilmore girls rewatch a couple weeks ago to see who's voice that was and ... bam! I'm hooked 😂😊
Her voice has a great ring/quality can't put my finger on it exactly but it's lovely.
I was in Law School at Thomas Cooley in Michigan when I saw a video of hers...I was miserable...I was studying and I had never heard of her before...I went out and bought all her music (late 90's) which were on CDs...couldnt downloand. Anyway, I loved her music and listened to her albums over and over again while studying...Thank You Sam...
I discovered Sam Philips while I was in law school on Mtv and I went out and bought her ablums (before CZcams) and I listened to her albums over and over again while studying...absolutely great music
Loved her in Die Hard with a Vengeance.
"I think he's dead my dear."
In a parallel universe where Phoebe Buffay is a really good musician
Loving this comment!
Sam is great composer and singer. Thanks NPR for this incredible show.
every time I think I've heard all the 'original' I'm gonna hear this lifetime as singer/songwriter, along comes Sam Phillips, out of the ashes of Leslie....truly, this woman is amazing, from her storytelling to her juxtaposition of melody to lyric...and then the harmonic structure of each song, different from every others of her songs...nothing gets old....EVER. I agree with whoever said it, on another post about her, that if she isn't as well-known as she might otherwise be it's because she's above everybody's heads...and I have to agree wholeheartedly. being an even more unknown than she, I 'get' what it takes to say what you gotta say at the risk of being misunderstood...personally, I believe that knowing this and doing it anyway is what integrity is, of which she is made of VAST AMOUNTS!! with a sly smile that could rule the world, I truly hope that Sam always keeps on keeping on doing what she does best...being true to herself.
+Marianne Osiel - I'm so sorry that I could only give you ONE thumbs up.
Aerial Heights not sure what that means....? no problem either way. I'm trying to get better at letting people know about other artists besides myself :) and Sam Phillips deserves her due!!
I've been a Sam Phillips fan since 1989. "The Indescribable Wow" is one of my all-time favorite albums. I saw her perform in 1991 at the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC.
Great album, start to finish.
Wow. I was there too. Only time I have ever seen, her, I think.
I was there too! Mark Heard was her guitarist. What a treat to see them both!
Cruel Inventions is my favorite, but Martinis & Bikinis is still the gold standard. Unless you’re into this newer stuff like A Boot & A Shoe, which is IMO like an incredible second act, or at least a great encore
It's cool she was the la la la song singer in Gilmore Girls
watched this last year...awesome to watch it again. Sam rocks.
I liked how she strummed guitar in 1984 on Hourglass as Leslie. A great piece!
I saw her in a club back in the 90’s. And I loved the way she songs were used in Ruby in Paradise.
Thanks You Die Hard movie...just finished it yesterday and found this talented musician
Sam is the best !!!beautiful and a real writer bless you SP
I wish I could find a set of her playing all the boot & a shoe album.. or some other live gigs from her playing more of her older stuff.. I'd buy the dvd / blu ray in a heartbeat
"A Boot and a Shoe" is really one of the top 5 albums of the 2000s. Simply genius, and probably her finest writing ever.
I rediscovered Sam through the Gilmore Girls music clips on CZcams and will be checking more into her collection.
Love Sam and her music!. I really need to catch her in concert - come to DFW soon!
Her chord/key changes just knock me out.
I first heard Sister Rosetta through the Robert Plant/Allison Krauss collaboration. Never knew Sam was the original author. What a pleasant surprise!!! Thank you NPR
Huh?
@@JazzSoulMetal Robert Plant ( former lead Led Zeppelin) and Allison Krause have a Grammy album where they perform Sister Rosetta. I didn know Sam Phillips was the original author
@@graphikeye oh. The song! I thought you meant a song that Rosetta originally performed. Lol
selling her music from the trunk of a red car... I laughed out loud as she hocked her wares, I mean, who could possibly be any cuter? This is one precious artist who just knocks me out...
what a duo... sam and T Bone
An original.......thank you Sam and thank you NPR x
This is wonderful.
how come i didn't know her? She's just so good.
I searched for sam phillips because i was intrigued by her villain role in die hard....how surprised i am to discover that she is more than what i am expecting!
Funny story -- apparently she got that role after the director saw her on the cover of her Martinis & Bikinis album.
@@mysterysurf4554 He liked her look. I get that.
What a wonderful duo!
Love this!!
This is the crazy ass chick who cut up one dude in Die Hard With a Vengeance wow she has a totally different personality in real life.

Sooooo much better than Tay Tay and the pop that most people swallow as music. Thx Sam/Leslie - you have taken me "Beyond Saturday Night"
Both fantastic musicians.

god that record those two made is just amazing.
'Dei Hard with a Vengeance' brought me here :)
Saw her in Athens touring for Martinis and Bikinis in maybe 1992. Was she opening for the B52s? I can't recall, but I rushed out to buy the CD the next day. I recall that she stood stock still as she sang these lush and surprising songs and then apologized a few songs in for the the lack of choreography. "I was traumatized recently by a Paula Abdul video," she said.
Love you, Sam
what a lovely guitar sound. does anyone know what type/model/brand of guitar Sam is playing?
she is hilarious. this is an amazing performance.
She's singing what's on his mind, that's great! As if she's a part of his mind, being physically realized
I loved her Martinis & Bikinis album. I'm going to look into Don't Do Anything
Tripping Over Gravity and happened to be when I first heard.
Wow this is great. NPR everywhere. Thank you guys for having Sam on. Wonder if Bonnie Raitt would do a show?
A true talent
Spinal Tap reference at 8:21 ! Awesome performance!
Anybody else came here to hear how she sounds bc she was mute the whole time during Die heart with vengeance movie 😂😂😂 and I’m shocked that she’s a singer wow!
Die heart? LOL
Cruel Inventions is among the best albums in history.
He will never let the righteous fall.

Hi Leslie.
Best Die Hard villain ever.
I'm watching this and Die Hard 3 at the same time. I like her better here.
Why are they not editing out the introductions anymore?
i would like to know the name of the first song
Is she the same one who was in Die Hard With A Vengeance?
Yoo the woman from die hard 3, first time hearin her speak lol
WTG!
Thanks guys from the music recommendation. I missed boot & a shoe, but will keep my eyes open for it.
the only female musician that looks like a Die Hard villain
I'm so glad I'm not the only person who has noticed that NPR announcers end on a low minor key as a rule. It's such a strange affect.
Sam do you still sing Christian songs?
Such a woman
The mute from Die Hard With a Vengeance!
