Great review. I'm a recent owner of the floor lamp version of this light and I couldn't agree more with your main criticism: WHAT was Dyson thinking with the shiny black plastics? And on the floor lamp, the 12" wide shiny black base is sitting on the floor (of course), where it's a perpetual magnet for attracting dust and dirt particles. It leaves you wondering how such a wildly impractical design choice--which anyone who's ever vacuumed would understand--got approved? I know a lot of people complain about the price for this lamp, as they do about Dyson products, in general, but you need to put it in context: high-quality, high-design lamps are expensive. A classic desk lamp like the Berenice from Luceplan costs $650 and it has a single, 2W LED bulb with an on/off switch--that's it. And it's popular enough to have remained in production for almost 40 years and counting. The only change has been an LED bulb replacement for what had been a halogen bulb. Meanwhile, there is nothing in lighting on the market that is even remotely close to all the useful and adaptable lighting technology contained in the Dyson.
Just purchased this light and it works perfectly for my office with my large rectangular writing desk away from the wall (credenza behind my sitting position). Couldn't find a desk lamp until Dyson with flexibility with color temp, adjustability to place the light where needed, adjustable lumens, and can light the entire desk space area at night reflecting off the 9 foot (2.8 meter) ceiling. Dyson should offer a 10-15 year warranty at this price instead of 5 years. This light is the 100% solution for my needs compared to the 50%-85% solutions with cheaper desk lamps working from home.

I have been looking at purchasing this lamp, or the floor version of it at least, for my office/reading room, so I looked for reviews on here & yours was the first one to come up therefore I watched it.
Firstly let me say, I loved your regaling of the “Spilled coffee” it’s almost like you read my mind when you were talking about shifting a normal lamp - I have knocked so many things (not just coffee) off my desk when trying to angle a lamp, plus my cat has a tendency to lean on all my desk lamps, no matter how big, small, heavy or lightweight they may be, hence why I’m looking to get the floor lamp version - to stand in the gap between my desk & my cuddle chair, so it can be seamlessly moved from desk to reading lamp … one which my cat cannot knock over!
I really like the ambience setting, that will be so useful when I’m just watching something on the iMac, or reading/drawing on my iPad; anyway, thank you for posting this insightful & very enlightening (pun intended) video, I have made up my mind now - I have hit the Pay Now button on the Dyson website.

What happened to the Dyson SolarCycle task light? Do they still sell that one?
My floor version adaptor is squeaking if it‘s dim I could hear it through the room :( if I plug in usb c it‘s even louder and more like beeping directly from the tube. I contacted Dyson and they sent me a free package mark for the heavy lamp. I hope it‘s not a general problem. And I hope they fix the app soon, as I reported that it does not reconnect after the app was in background. I think it‘s a good point that the buttons dont get hot, I dont like that I cant push the heavy buttons without danger to touch the touchsliders. Maybe it’s only with the floor version but if you push with only one finger upwards the arm feels a little bit flimsy

It's not worth the money. I bought 2 lamps. Both lamps keep turning off after 2 minutes after 2 years of use
Could the lamp replace the lighbar in your desk setup?
Yes, in fact I sold my light bar a while ago. But the lamp I am still using this very day.

If you're willing to DIY, you can get very high quality LEDs for far less and build your own light enclosures tailored to your photography needs. The LED in these units likely costs somewhere in the $25-$50 range.

One question I haven't found the answer to: Is the height adjustable? Or is that fixed? Seems like it moves in only one plane.
I believe you can not adjust the height.
Not height adjustable, and it's taller than the average desk lamp.
So, that might be an issue if you need to lower it down to focus on a specific spot on your desk.
I remember your channel from somewhere else? Don't you have a Herman Miller Aeron video or something liike that as well?
Yeah I made a few videos in the past but wasn't particularly satisfied with the quality of them. So I decided to redo everything from scratch.

I am still using it, although I had the same problem with my light as some others are having, namely it turning itself off after a few minutes. Dyson replaced my old light like 6 months ago, so will have to wait and see how this one turns out in the long run.
At this point I don‘t recommend buying it anymore until there is some kind of fix for it, or at least some acknowledgment from Dyson. The problem of it turning off seems to be pretty widespread/common. Manufacturing or design flaw if I had to guess.

I've been lucky with my Dyson light with no issues since purchase in Feb of 2023. Work from home and use the light daily.
@@mskestudios just got mine. If I may ask do you mean that the light will turning itself off after few minutes in operating in a standard setting without turning autolight & movement detection?

I don’t recommend this light. I just got mine today, April 14, 2023, and not even a full day, it started turning off by itself. Yes, the sensor was disabled. Stay away from this $650 junk! You’ll regret it. It’s a common issue with this light!
