L’imparfait is the French version of the “past progressive” or “past continuous” tense in English - and it can be tricky to learn! You may be unsure when to use this French “tense” instead of the passé composé, or how to conjugate it.
We’re going to explore all of that and more in today’s lesson, all about l’imparfait. Let’s dive in!
Take care and stay safe.
😘 from Grenoble, France.
Géraldine
Correction: It should be "Vous étiez" and not "Vous étions" at 8:15.
My apologies for the typo!
Je pense que Géraldine est un professeur excellent, un prof au sens meilleur. Elle connaît très bien son sujet, elle aime véritablement l’enseigner, et elle est très gentille aussi. J’aime sa chaîne.
My comprehension of le français (especially fast spoken) has improved so much so fast thanks to you. :)
Salut, Géraldine! I noticed a typo at 8:16 regarding the imperfect for être... it should be vous étiez (as you say), but the slide itself shows "vous étions" by mistake. Thanks for your videos, I love them all!!!
Bonjour Géraldine. Mon exemple; je parlais quand il est arrivé.
Yes, i am very happy learning French using your channel. 🏆🏆🏆
Merci beaucoup! J'ai besoin de cette vidéo tout suite!
So nice french lesson ! Thanks for your time.
Bravo, Geraldine! Merci beaucoup!
Your teaching method is very very good❤
Wow are you stalking me? Because I’ve been watching videos on passé composé v. imparfait for the past 2 days, and here you come like a French Superhero 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 I understand a lot more now than before, thank you
Bravo d’Australie 👍🏼
Bonne vidéo Géraldine. Je la regarderai à nouveau.
Great lesson! Merci.
Cette leçon est super!!! Merci!
Hi Geraldine! Thanks for your lessons. Si je ne me trompe pas, il y a une petite faute de frappe on minute 8:17 for "vous" it shoud be "vous étiez", according to your pronunciation. Bonne journée!!!!!
I've been struggling with the use of l'imparfait for weeks! You always make difficult things a lot easier to understand. It just seems so simple when you teach! You are the reason why I keep good grades in my french class in school. thank you! Also keeping all of us super motivated. You are truely a genius! And also soooooo beautiful! 💙
Je travaillais quand J’ai vu ta vidéo
This is helpful thank you very much
SUPER! Always a great topic for learners! I'll save the video to share with my adult students when they need a revision. Merci!
Thank you. A very useful video.
6:34 “Elle allait à la boulangerie quand elle a vu Michel.”
It seems like _l’impartait_ is used as the past progressive is in English to place one action as the _background_ for something else that then occurs.
Merci Geraldine!
Tu as bien expliqué l'imparfait. Enfin, je comprends comment l'utiliser 😊.
Dear Geraldine, I'm a student of yours and with this video I've just had a huge "ah ha!" momemt. Merci beaucoup. I was getting so confused with the l'impartait and passé composé. The way you just said it made it all clear to me. I'm so thrilled. I've improved my french so much this last few months and can't thank you and CZcams enough. I wish you all the best, beverly
Enfin! Maintenant je comprends l'usage d'imparfait! J'étais m'embrouiller depuis j'étais une lycéenne Merci mille fois.
Thank you! thank you! thank you!
Hi Geraldine! I think your explanation here is great, but I think you missed a helpful additional use of the imparfait. You mentioned describing a situation in the past or long continuous action as "J'étais à Grenoble en telle année", but I would add the special example of setting descriptions in storytelling. "Il était une fois, le ciel était bleu, la mer était grande, nous étions jeunes, il faisait beau, etc." Might be helpful to someone here! Des bises des USA
I'm really confused of when to use imparfait nd passé compose, but I'm getting to gradually understand. Tnx 🥰
Merci pour la vidéo
fantastic :))) merci - salut.
Geraldine, an extremely rare - if not unique - occurrence: in the conjugation of the imperfect of 'etre', you have an error - 'vous allions' instead of 'vous alliez'. Thanks for all your fantastic lessons. They are really helpful.
I think you've got a typo here as well. Allions/alliez are not the imperfect of "être," but "aller." Geraldine's slide does show an error at 8:16, though... it should be written "vous étiez," not "vous étions."
I think the double S thing instead of an R with the second group is because the letter R in word endings usually implies will or would - future or conditional (I think I have that right!). For instance, je voudrais. I think the second group verbs change from 'r' to 'ss' in order to avoid confusion and make it more clear what the meaning is supposed to be.
Merci Geraldine. When would I correctly choose between the imperfect (je allais) and a progressive (j'ai été all allant)
Ongoing past action. We were taught to think of perfect as complete, clear beginning and end. "I ate turnips." vs. the imperfect "I used to eat turnips."
Finally. Was + ing. Thank you! Now, what about the conditional ...?
Hello! First of all I'd love to say "Merci beaucoup pour tous vos vidéos, ils m'aident vraiment!" But I guess I noticed a small typo in your video, I don't know if it's possible to correct it now, but anyway..
8:14 - Vous étions (and you say it "étiez" at the same time)
Merci, merci, merci! A 8:18, it says "Vois étions" when you are saying, of course, "Vous étiez." Just wanted you to know. (So nice to help you since you've helped me so much.)
Merci beaucoup! This is what I needed ☺️ I always get confused lol
Geraldine! Would you mundo Sharing the Brand and color of your lipstick?!
Merci
Is English as a second language this difficult? Geraldine you explain these things so well. Merci beaucoup. Is the past progressive part of English grammar? I've never been taught this in school.
Actually, as a native English speaker, I learn a lot about English grammar through French!
Like you, I wonder what others learning English think of it. I've heard one French person say he watches CNN and it's too fast for him.
And then the usual tough ones: though, tough, through, plough, for example!
@@z.t.8950 As a french-canadian who watch those video for there "cuteness" I can tel you that that English is 75% bad french...😁🤭 That's why. As you're learning english as a second language, you find out that you already know all the "big" words cause you speak French...
TYPO at 8:15 mark written as "Vous étions" (sic), but spoken correctly as "Vous étiez"
That was terrific. I use j'avais eu, sometimes. Don't know if that is correct.
it could work in some instances yes
Could you do a video please contrasting the conditional and the future tenses because they sound so similar.
I've read the following and want to hear your perspective:
"We are supposed to pronounce "ais" in "je mangerais" like è and "ai" in "je mangerai" like é.
Not everyone knows that and not everyone does that though.
People who do not write French very good tend to confuse those in writing. It is a common mistake, I think comparable to English confusion between "it's" and "its".
...
In France french many speakers usually pronounce them the same and make no distinction. Sometimes people spell it out loud "je parlerais, A I S, ..." or precise whether it's conditional or future in the conversation to make sure they're understood."
"Vous étiez" is misspelled at minute 8:08
) ¬Bisous
Doesn't "voir" have an irregular root in the imperfect? Je voyais, perhaps?
Ainda estou a pensando a estudar essa lingua😴🤦♂️ que tal...?
❤❤
Less grammar more usage=I care not about the regular or irregular endings I find tables online save time... I m intrigued with the sound ie examples. Tu etais sounds as teais I need sentence. Commentelle the t sound.
vous etions???
8:16 vous étionez
I notice you pronounce some words differently, even in following sentences. For example, the word matin is pronounced maton and, later, matan (sorry only approximations). Is this dialect?
No, matin is the same in every dialect, I think her pronounciation has more to do with some struggling with english in her case lol
But can’t we also say: il parlait englais = He spoke french or Je marchais dans la rue = I walked down the street ?
I understand why the other past tense is called "passé composé" but where the hell does the name "imparfait" come from? "Plus que parfait" is even weirder...
Hi Geraldine! Could you please NOT use red background? Some people uses monitors and it pains the eye looking at your red background for a long period of time!! Have you been watching your own vlogs? If not, please use an HD screen and stare at your red background and let me know if it doesn't make you dizzy.
PS: I had to fast forward! I think "CZcamsrs" are paid by the length of views your users have, so to keep up with your revenues, try listening to your subscriber feedbacks.
PSS: Clearly you didnt watch your video! THERE ARE ERRORS IN YOUR VID!! Merde!
