What happens when you SHOOT a Water Tower - KEN HERON - DJI Phantom 4 PRO

  • I received a call from my small town water company. They wanted to get a closer look at what they suspected was a hole made by a bullet in the water tower. They needed close-up images so the repair crew could see exactly what they'd need to make proper repairs. A small bullet-hole is easier to fix than a crack or loose weld seam.
    I was glad to be able to help out my town, as we are a close-knit group of people here in Huntingdon, Tennessee.
    Here's the same water tower without a leak: • DJI Phantom 4 - Huntin...
    Here's a water tower that LEANS quite a bit: • DJI Phantom 4 - Leanin...
    And here's a guy reading a book on top of a water tower: • Mindfield sculpture at...

      Funny how the drone is always blamed for being "annoying". Why don't we blame the operator? Maybe the person flying should fly where it's not a bother or harm to others. Over someone's property is not a proper or safe place to fly.

    I inspected drinking water systems for 20 years and this happens more then most people would believe. It is a good thing it was shot up higher on the tank because the lower it is the pressure there is and it could actually spray out to the road too. We had one that was shot low during the winter and the water froze on the road. The Hwy Dept. had to shut the road down till the hole was fixed and ice removed.

      Elliot Flowers Usually they have to weld the hole closed but a short term fix can use a bolt tapped in the hole. Yes they have to lower the water below the hole which will lower the water pressure in the area too. It is a Federal offense now since 9/11 to mess with a water system.

    Ken I just discovered your CZcams and think it’s awesome.
    One thing that got my attention especially with really distracted drivers, I’d strongly urge you to find anywhere other than a shoulder of the road or highway.
    So many people are hurt or killed by having their vehicle hit from a passing vehicle or truck.
    I’ve worked in road service for decades and have horror stories on so many innocent people getting hit by sitting on the shoulder of the road.
    Even small town USA, not real busy and the speed may not be as fast as the interstate can be the worst because drivers are more relaxed and apt to grab that cell phone to text.
    Can’t wait to see more of your videos and stay safe out there

      Hi, Phil Swift here with Flex Tape! The super-strong waterproof tape! That can instantly patch, bond, seal, and repair! Flex tape is no ordinary tape; its triple thick adhesive virtually welds itself to the surface, instantly stopping the toughest leaks. Leaky pipes can cause major damage, but Flex Tape grips on tight and bonds instantly! Plus, Flex Tape’s powerful adhesive is so strong, it even works underwater! Now you can repair leaks in pools and spas in water without draining them! Flex Tape is perfect for marine, campers and RVs! Flex Tape is super strong, and once it's on, it holds on tight! And for emergency auto repair, Flex Tape keeps its grip, even in the toughest conditions! Big storms can cause big damage, but Flex Tape comes super wide, so you can easily patch large holes. To show the power of Flex Tape, I sawed this boat in half! And repaired it with only Flex Tape! Not only does Flex Tape’s powerful adhesive hold the boat together, but it creates a super strong water tight seal, so the inside is completely dry! Yee-doggy! Just cut, peel, stick and seal! Imagine everything you can do with the power of Flex Tape!

    This is a great example of the future of commercial drone usage. I suspect drones will be used frequently for high speed inspection of industrial equipment, especially as the technology to attach more complex inspection instrumentation becomes available.

    • @sethrich5998
      @sethrich5998 Před 6 lety

      Travis Thacker Well duh, in this case a magnified optic would work. Think ahead a little. Think about more complex applications like on oil rigs. Not everything is easily accessible or has a direct line of sight. There are plenty of dangerous inspection type jobs that could be done safer and more efficiently with drones. Especially when combined with preprogrammed tasks inspection times would be drastically decreased over having a person physically go to each inspection location. That benefit just gets larger with the ability to outfit drones with more precision inspection equipment besides just optical systems.

Not only does Flex Tape’s powerful adhesive hold the boat together, but it creates a super strong water tight seal, so the inside is completly dry! Yee-doggy! Just cut, peel, stick and seal! Imagine everything you can do with the power of Flex Tape!

    impressive , i have been INSIDE an empty one of these and its really a thrill . the reverb is something else . we had candles to place around the center tube ... we would ignite some wax and drop the flaming wax droplets down the tube , they sing . it would rise in pitch as the oscillating droplets fell as they reduced mass and eventually ceased . - the most amazing sound . especially if you had 3-4 people doing it at the same time . it was the coolest thing i ever heard . the residual sound would take about a full minute to taper off due to the length of the tail . then we would laugh like maniacs and do it again . we did get caught . there was the fire marshall , quite a few rescue and police vehicles and then the neighbors . we refused to respond . they had a helicopter come out . THAT was loud , i remember a lot of debris in the air and the flood light thru the hatch and then of course the whole thing vibrating , scary , i was tripping too . . eventually my two buddys surrendered as Firemen had prepared and begun climbing up to get us . i never left the inside , my pals had climbed out and were laying on top watching all this , they were yelling at the fireman and the firem arshall had a megaphone. they got charged with disobeying a direct order from the fire marshall was ONE charge . i think he said it cost 1600 for everything except the lawer in like 1987. I stayed for another 6 hours after they left - in wait and much later i climbed down , but it was a long terrible scary jones . if i moved the rust and soles of my shoes made a scraping sound that echoed out - it was so loud. so i sat still for 6 hours , while tripping . i wanted a smoke so bad , i was terrified . i think i did have one , i remember the lighter sound echoing and thinking i was busted for sure . finally i figured enough time had passed and i was totally numb i climbed out and looked to see any cops ... none . i started climbing down quickly , terrified as he sun us coming up and i am visible i waited too long ! an ambulance left with its siren blasting it exited from the fire department which is visible on wolf road as i was maybe 1/3rd mile down . i started going down the ladder a few rungs at a time /// very fast down , the ambulance turned on joliet road , went to an old folks home that was east of the tower . i was so relieved i stopped for a rest and then went back at it down ... our ladder was gone so i had to shimmy down a cross support (X) . if not i would have been BUSTED i had also parked 3 blocks away , not next to it like my "buddys" they had spray painted a giant skull on it , facing the main road . i had predicted this bust but i also couldn't stop myself from going back up which , i went about a dozen times . we had one guy get stuck in the tower . he was kind of portly and he couldn't climb the rope. thank goodness the three of us were strong enough to pull him out of there . i was up and down that rope maybe 6 times that day . i had to untie the large knots at the end of the rope and then tie the rope around him like a harness in order to pull him up.. he was panic-ing pretty bad. we had an aluminum ladder from a gravel elevator that was hidden in the golf course . that ladder got you up to the where the towers rungs start . the rope was stolen from some barges on a canal from the gravel elevator( willow springs il) . it was maybe 3-4 inch thick rope - gnarly stuff . we had two ropes which ended up being this swing game that was so much fun . the ropes were tied to a ladder rung outside the top hatch and hung down slightly off set from thre drain tube , which was maybe 4-5 foot diameter. it was ridiculously dangerous.. the ropes with these huge knots like you could sit on hung down two to three feet off the floor . bringing those ropes up i was not there for but i heard it was BAD , with them tied to your waists was very dangerous as the wind was pulling them ... my opal said he didnt think he was gonna make it . the coolest thing was power swinging swinging (assisted) . you would have two people , wind the ropes counterclockwise as much as you could . then start going clock wise, one person would run up high on the sides of the ball , pushing the rope , the other person would sit and fly . you would go pretty high up in a circle inside this echoing dome with candles lit . all ijn all it was very safe though , its not like we were taking lsd every time we went up there , as i think once we didnt have any . these was a few summers where we were thrill seeking , like bought seasons passes to the theme park and used to take a little lsd to enhance it . those trips to the tower , i will never forget how much fun that was but man talk about risky ....

    The best reference for the size of the bullet hole that I can determine is the horizontal weld seam below the hole which appears to be a two bead cap and the vertical weld seam to the right that appears to be a single bead cap. Typically a two bead cap is about 7/16 inches wide and a single bead cap about 3/8 of an inch. My guess is that the hole is at least 1/2 inch in diameter. So who owns a 50 caliber Barrett in the area? Too big to be a 30-06, a hole from a 30-06 would be less than 3/8 of an inch BTW excellent drone work.

      Those water towers are normally not used to drink out of except for emergency situations. What the water towers are normally used for is when they have to "shut down" the main pumps. It is far more expensive to shut them down, so they use the water towers to keep water flowing through them so they dont cease up....IDK if it is the same for small towns and such but i know that is what they are used for in bigger to medium sized cities.

    • @merds77
      @merds77 Před 6 lety +7

      My understanding is that the elevated water in the tower supplies pressure so the potable water will flow into your house. Id imagine it would be a steel core armor piercing round from a large bore rifle..most of the lead would be stripped off of the penetrator..or could have been a metorite 🤔

You simply Buy two-cycle engine oil with the little squeeze bottle top measuring cup and you just pour some I think I was doing to measuring cups full per1 fill up and my engine lasted for many many years and 160000 MI. @@rob864guy The doors on his car which open forward. It's a slang term for doors hinged at the back instead of the front as they were perceived to be unsafe. They were once on allot of horse drawn carriages and some cars around the 1930s.

    If the tower is that full, it seems unlikely that the puncture was made from inside however there appears to be a hatch or porthole on the topside, accessible by just climbing up. At peak water use the water level drops considerably. At times, I suspect, the water level drops low enough to repel down into the tower and with night vision or a simple flashlight, shoot a bullet straight and directly through the water tower.

      The exit hole would be visible if shot from inside. You can tell it was shot by a rifle from the outside. You could line the hole up and find where the bullet was fired from. I'm thinking someone pulled over on the expressway at night. Might have even found a shell casing near the grassline on the shoulder of the road, probably close to where those guys parked.

    That's very interesting, I'm surprised they don't have some kind of utility access road that would have put you right next to it? What was the final verdict? The round would be at the bottom of the riser in the silt. IF it was a bullet... it's in there for sure.

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn Před 6 lety +3

      Oh, and then they could do an evaluation of the round and find out who the shooter was? :)

    • @KenHeron
      @KenHeron  Před 6 lety +4

      The round was shattered most likely. They patched it from the outside.

    One deterrent - I once saw a cabin built covering a water tower... (with front door, windows and curtains) to make it look like someone lived there. The park ranger said, aside from saving them money on repairs, it was the only thing that stopped random people from shooting their water tower..

    I don’t think that was a bullet hole. The water at the exit point is streaming straight out. A bullet fired from the ground would make the water stream out at a downward angle. Furthermore, I think it would be hard to puncture plate steel with a regular bullet. Yes, the shooter could have used AP, but the angle is still off.

      There is so much pressure forcing through that tiny hole it will spray out the side like that. I think you're visualizing the hole as a tunnel when it's actually just relatively thin metal.

    • @Stopes.
      @Stopes. Před 6 lety +4

      Ink Addict Agree. It will shoot out regardless of the angle of entry on a wall as thin as it is under that amount of pressure. Yeah

    • @jeffreylonigro1382
      @jeffreylonigro1382 Před 6 lety +1

      Ink Addict there wouldn’t be much pressure at all near the top of the tank. Water towers are not pressurized: the water gets its pressure by being elevated. The top of the tank would have the least water weight and the least pressure. He zooms in close enough to see the hole. It’s perpendicular to the steel and not angled in any way. I’ll call the town and ask them.

      Benjamin Franklin you are correct. Surgeon screwed up a routine operation and I’m off my feet and bored to tears. Most people can walk the day of hip replacement surgery. Surgeon cracked my femur and then physical therapist recracked the bone. I’ll be going on 12 weeks before I can even try to walk.
