    Steve Blum said, in a panel i found, that when they did the english dub for this that they had nothing to go off of except for the director's word. He said they didn't have any of the music or any other voice actors. It was just him and the microphone. He mentioned that it did make things alot harder and also he said that, if he could, now that he's watched the whole series through, he'd redo some of the lines spike had to make them sound better.

    Preference is subjective, but quality wise I think they are both excellent. I generally like to watch it in japanese because sometimes a tiny bit of their intended personality is lost/changed through dubbing. Not saying sub is superior or anything.

    Japanese. Vicious has a commanding presence, a looming voice that resonates in the environment. Spike in Japanese has a smoother voice, fitting his insouciant and somewhat insolent attitude.
    Also, the grunts are better in Japanese.

  • @eivind9668

    None can really say what accent are the best fit for Spike in this series. The reason is that different voices gives the two versions of him different personality. I'v watched both versions, even though I don't understand japanese. When I start to watch a new eerie I always have to decide if I like the main character, his appearance, clothes, style AND VOICE. I decided after a couple of episodes that I liked the combo of Spike and Jet. Jet is that really macho, one bit angry, one bit loud guy, and Spike is the always cool and relaxed, full of confidence guy. This was in japanese, allright. Then when I saw this american, hotheaded, Clint Eastwood guy and he seems like a completely different person. The american spike is a bit more rough then the japanese, also he seems cocky more often than the japanese guy. Might b just me tough. Loved the story.

    I'm subbed type of person, but I love hearing it sometimes in dubbed. Cowboy bebop is one of my favorites in Dubbed. Spike's voice actor aka Steve Blum, matches so perfectly with spike. Sometimes dubbed voices try to hard & it sounds so bad so I pick subbed. Although cowboy bebop is so good in dubbed. I could listen to spike's voice on repeat.

      Someone said different does not mean less. They said this in regards to a video games localization having some line changes and delivery changes. The games great and has a large legacy and is famouse for the way it is for americans and is considered good. But he notes that people dont get that. I feel this applys to dubs, its different....and they wanna judge them against the original language. We should treat dubs like a new peace of media being released. I mean...if the spanish dub was BETTER than the english for say....."lion king", im not gonna watch it in spanish all of a sudden.

    • @Piegoose
      @Piegoose Před 10 lety +1

      DeathgGod I agree with you when you say it is more that they are "different" than better or worse, but I don't agree so much when you say "we should treat dubs like a new peace of media". The voice actors do take some of their own style into how they act, making some character's personalities seem a bit different, but 99.99% of the content there is exactly the same in visuals and story. Also, sure the dub isn't factually better than the sub, nor the sub to the dub. It's all subjective. When two things exist and are different, people will many times like one more than the other. That doesn't make it final and how everyone should think, it's subjective and opinion. You miss that point

    ok, in other words you're talking about the 90's cartoon. the one made in the 80's was just a 2 part pilot that didn't get picked up. anyway I totally get why you would say that, believe me I do. the animation is dated, but it looks good for 1992, and it was very ambitious to base their designs on Jim Lee's artwork. as for the voice work, yes there were some very cheesy performances in that show. but some of the performances I still like, even for Wolverine. maybe it's because I grew up with it.

    I disagree, at least when it comes to material I've watched. I've been watching anime sense the 90's, and I've developed an interest in live action Japanese cinema as well, mainly chambara(samurai films). in both, the acting always seems excellent, and the actors give their all. some of them are unbelievably talented, and train for years to create different voices, and tones. I actually know a little about voice modulation, but if I tried to do some of what they do, I'd lose my voice for a week.

  • @DireAxis
    @DireAxis Před 12 lety

    Overall, the English dub just hits home for me and like many it is one of the few where I prefer it. Blum's voice lends a ever present sadness to the character, whenever he speaks there is always an undertone of it and that brings another dimension that may not have been intentional. Very present in the last episode, when he is explaining his eyes to Faye. Not meant to offend, but there is a sterility in some japanese dubs. Often there is no alternative that is as good or better though.

I watch anime in Brasil first, than I watch in United States, but I never like it because of the voice acting wasn't good at all (so I just stop watching until I use the internet). Once I watch in Japanese, it was so much better, and that is when I started to like anime.

    Yeah, I've heard that story a few times but funnily enough nobody has ever been able to provide me with a link to prove it's true. By now after asking a hundred times for proof I'm inclined to believe it's a pop culture myth.
    But even if he did there's always the fact that these kinds of things can be political in show-biz, plus the fact that I've always subscribed to the Death Of The Author school of thought, so the intentions and opinions of the director don't influence me much, if at all.

  • @drhploveboat

    well to be honest, I'm not sure why you would feel that way. when I was referring to the vocal talents of those actors, I did mean Japanese voice actors specifically. just looking at this video, I think the Japanese version of Vicious, sounds way better than the dub. I've seen so much of this material, that nothing seems forced about it to me, maybe I'm just used to it.

    English with an American accent suits Spike, but vicious sounds better in Japanese.

    Yeah, "fake and unnatural" is how I'd put it too. But that still seems like the opposite of "lifeless".

    Don't worry about it man, it's not your fault.The fact is that anything Dubbed always sounds at least a little off. I understand quite a bit of Japanese, and let me just say this if you watch Gotham Knight or South Park in Japanese it doesn't sound natural either. The reason is because the lines and situations are written for a particular culture and it just never translates perfectly. This is about the best you are going to get though,. and it's not too bad in my opinion.

    cowboy bebop probally has the best english voice dubbing. a lot of english dubs sound weird case in point FF advent children, the original voices are so much better especially for sephiroth and cloud.

    This is by far one of the best animes of all time- but for once, I'm apt to like the English better. Steve Blum is just incredible as Spike, he does the character immutable justice.
    Also, it doesn't make you a weeaboo. A weeaboo is someone who runs around going "kawaii desu" and doesn't respect Japanese culture at all. If you understand it and have respect for it, you are out of weeaboo territory.

    Wrong. I was an adult already when the English dub aired and I prefer the dub. Is it early adult nostalgia?

    Yea, Steve Blum is the shit- i think he is the perfect voice for spike... but i agree vicious sounds better in japanese. It's gunna suck for the cowboy bebop movie for Steve Blum to not be spikes voice.

    Vicious might be a bit better in Japanese but overall definitely dub>japanese for me

    Even weeaboos deserve their opinions but you guys are all biased :/ why would Watanabe (you shiuld know who that is ) say that he prefered the english dub OVER his own language dub? He said that the characters were better represented and cooler...

    In general, I prefer english dubs any day.The only thing that bothers me is when they use the same actors to dub to often..

    Well my friend kept telling me that the English dubbing was "Really amazing!!!" but I haven't looked into it until now because I'm a "Close-minded Weaboo" (both quotes came from my friend, by the way)
    And I have confirmed one of her statements, well, half confirmed it: I'm a Weaboo. I already kind of guessed, but I was determined to pretend like I wasn't so she'd stop making fun of me, but it's time to face the facts.
    While I agree that the Dub is good, I just can't get behind the voices :P
