I bet when this bit was recorded in 1985 no one would have guessed that it would be more interesting than whatever the movie or sporting event was recorded also
In 1985, RTE1 would have started broadcasting at 3.00pm with "Good Afternoon" and concluded at around 11.30pm. RTE2 varied, but usually around 5.30pm until 11.30pm. To think this was the national broadcaster of Ireland, and their two channels could not provide a proper full schedule, even by 1985. RTE1 on the air for less than 9 hours, RTE2 struggling to stay on for 6 hours. How dire was RTE budgets in 1985?
John King Didn't it have a more special feel back then, though? Now every channel is 24 hours and things are too accessible. Simpler times, but I look back on them with fondness.
Yes, but they could have done a bit better and spent a few extra pounds so that people who were home during the day could be entertained. The shift worker, the student, the elderly, the housebound, the unemployed etc. That is what ITV started to do from October 1972 with the launch of their daytime service starting each day from 9.30am. RTE could have started both channels around 3.00pm and run a 9 hour schedule until midnight. It would have helped, since there are a public service broadcaster funded by the licence fee.
@@johnking5174 Perhaps proving the points you make on RTÉ 2’s budgets and cheap programming, there is no such movie as “In Love at his Own Choice” to be found on the Internet, IMDb or anywhere else. I’d assume RTÉ wanted to find a movie to put on for the sake of it, and were the only ones who were even aware that the film was in existence.
