Multi Axis Wood Turning - The Emerging Ball

  • Hello folks! In this video I will be experimenting to make an emerging ball piece. This is something I have wanted to try for a while but never gotten round to it.
    Starting with a blank approximately 20mm square by about 150mm long, mounted off centre to create the first hemisphere. The blank was then rotated by 90 degrees along its length to create the second hemisphere matching up with the sides of the first.
    The results look like a ball emerging from a straight sided square piece of wood.
    This was all done by eye so there was a lot of fettling and minor adjustment of the blank in the jaws during the process. A decent share of off camera sanding was done too.
    Watch this space as my next one of this type, the ball itself will also be a hollow from! Also I will most likely make a half and quarter circle template to make sure it will be a perfect ball shape.

      Thank you so much! To be fair, it doesn't have to overhang at all so it could definitely be done with a lot less madness flailing around. I didn't know where I was going with this at the start so left it on there just in case. The added danger is kinda exciting too 😂

      @tfturning  Před 3 měsíci +1

      I thought about this after Mark mentioned but it didn't actually need to stick out of the chuck at all really, adds to the excitement though ay 😂 Thanks for stopping by Mike!!

      Thank you so much! There is no purpose beyond being a cool thing to hold. Also with it being an odd shape it doesn't look like something that could be made using a lathe. Makes people question how it's possible, especially wood turners. 😁

    • @tfturning
      @tfturning  Před 3 měsíci +1

  • @MarkMcCluney
    @MarkMcCluney Před 3 měsíci

    In. Credible. That had me guessing the whole way. And that was a long time to hold my breath. But why the assymetric length of wood? Am I i missing something obvious? (Feel free to enter your own joke there.) Thanks Tim, fascinating, informative and enjoyable as always.

    • @tfturning
      @tfturning  Před 3 měsíci

      Thanks Mark!! The length of wood was because after the initial part was made and the piece rotated, it's then only held in the jaws on one side by the part I didn't touch. Realistically, I probably could/should have cut the full length down to just clear the chuck but what can I say, this way is definitely more exciting 😂 Cheers mate!

    • @tfturning
      @tfturning  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Thanks Ben! I actually saw one but on a bigger scale which needed all kinds of jigs to hold the wood, probably the reason I put it off for so long. Didn't realize it could be done with what I had. Cheers mate!
