+Kate Hasel The prophet today (Thomas S. Monson) is guided by Christ, just as Peter and the other Apostles were during the early days of the Church. If a prophet of God in the New Testament (Peter) can be guided by the Savior Jesus Christ, then why not in our day? There is a great pattern of prophets being guided by God all through the scriptures, starting from Adam and down on through. As the prophets were guided by God, they in turn were able to warn, exhort, encourage, and call many to repentance. So, by following the prophet we are following Christ, which is as you quoted from John 8:12 to follow the light of the world. By not following the prophet we choose to walk in darkness.

Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God’s curse! 9 As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let them be under God’s curse!" I am a Mormon. An active one. But I have to disagree a little bit with some of these messages. I do believe in modern prophets and I also believe that a "true" prophet would never say anything contrary to what had already been said in the Book of Mormon. Including president Monson. I don't believe he is perfect and contradictory to what other have said he still has and always will have free agency. God will never take away his free agency. Not every single thing that comes out of his mouth was given to him from the Lord. It is prophetic only "when moved upon by the Holy Ghost." There are some out there that would say it was doctrine if he claimed the burger he was eating to be "the best in the world." I also just wanted to point out that prophets in the Book of Mormon (and even some since, like Joseph smith but not many) were bold in saying that they had spoken to God and or seen him. I believe they still should today as God speaks to his prophets the same way he always has. He is unchanging. I have heard ridiculous comments like "anyone that claims to have seen God is lying because they would never tell anyone. It's too sacred!" I don't necessarily believe that. I sustain president monson. but I have never heard him once say "thus sayeth the Lord" except when quoting scripture. All I am trying to say is that Jesus Christ is the only perfect example. God the father is all knowing and is the only person I will ever completely rely on for guidance because I know he cannot lead me astray. We should not worship the prophet. We worship our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and him alone. I am striving to build a strong relationship with my father in heaven and live by the spirit so that I can be In tune with my fathers guidance and will for me. I want to be so in tune that I already know for myself what I need to know before the prophet ever has to say anything. I don't believe that he will ever say anything that hasn't already been said in the BOM. So sustain President Monson, listen to what he says but ultimately study he BOM and come to know Christ. Establish a relationship with Heavenly Father. I will never blindly fallow a prophet. The church is fact not perfect as it is run by imperfect beings. But the gospel of Jesus Christ and his doctrine are perfect!

This video demonstrates the hazard associated with the "follow the prophet" mentality.
These kids got lost because they didn't follow the map. They trusted in a leader. The scriptures are the map. They clearly show us the path back to our Father. After teaching the Doctrine of Christ, Nephi testified, "And now, behold, my beloved brethren, this is the way; and there is none other way nor name given under heaven whereby man can be saved in the kingdom of God."
If we trust any person not to lead us astray, we are putting our trust in the arm of the flesh just like those kids. If the leader chooses to disregard the map (ignoring the scriptures) then we will be "led, that in many instances [we will] err because [we] are taught by the precepts of men."
President George Q. Cannon said, "Do not, brethren, put your trust in a man though he be a bishop, an apostle, or a president. If you do, they will fail you at some time or place; they will do wrong or seem to, and your support be gone."
Don't trust that a prophet will never teach you incorrectly. If they go against the scriptures, side with the scriptures.
Said Joseph Smith: "If any man preaches to you, doctrines contrary to the Bible, the Book of Mormon, or the Book of Doctrine & Covenants, set him down as an imposter."
This was echoed by Harold B. Lee who said, "And if [a leader] says something that contradicts what is found in the standard works (I think that is why we call them "standard" -- it is the standard measure of all that men teach), you may know by that same token that it is false, regardless of the position of the man who says it."
Do not trust in the arm of the flesh. Do not just play follow the leader. Search the scriptures. Feast upon the words of Christ. The words of Christ will tell you all things what ye should do!

Kassi true! As a convert I came to know the importance of prophets and the reason why they exist in Gods plan! But isn't reading or feasting upon the words of Christ the same thang as listening or reading the words of the living prophets today tho?! I mean the Bible is the records of the prophets or the the "flesh" as one brother said and they're dealings with God in their time! True we don't worship man we worship Christ! And for that a lot of christians turned to the Bible which is not a bad thang at all! But we need to be careful because even the scriptures can be ONE of the GODS that GOD said in one of the commandments that there shall be no other gods before me? I mean feasting upon the words of Christ or the scriptures is faaaaantastic!!!! But in my opinion the scriptures alone don't give you eternal life! Jesus words to the people who tried to accuse him for what he did on the sabbath was; "search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. And ye will not come unto me, that ye might have life."(John 5:39,40) the Bible/scriptures or the Prophets, old and new, dead or alive are all the same to me! They were given to us by our Heavenly Father to guide us back to Him! They're here for a reason, God has been calling them then, and is still today! Just don't take it to a point where we worship them instead of our God or the Christ like u said! We just need to be careful not to make the scriptures or the Bible or any of the Books our "other Gods" like the God says in the 10 commandments. The Bible itself said, in the beginning was the word, and the word was with God, and the word was God. And the word was made flesh! Not a book! If you read the book of Mormon, pray about it and get a Spiritual witness that what is contained in it is truth and of and from God, then you can trust source by which it came to you (ie Joseph Smith). If he is a vetted or trusted source then other doctrines and revelations (which is what prophets do) can be vetted through the same experiment (study and prayer).
The reason why LDS people put a trump card on a living prophet vs a dead one is b/c God is relevant and has prophets deliver eternal truths (that never change) and they also bring current warnings. Just as the Israelites couldn't have been delivered from Egypt by reading Noah's warnings about the flood, neither can we always avoid pit falls and Satan's cunning devices by only looking to ancient scriptures (although those ancient prophets and apostles did teach core truths that can be applied through all generations).
Take for instance all the different sects and denominations of CHRISTIAN churches that argue over points of doctrine, all deriving their arguments from different vs in the same bible. This is one of several reasons why God calls prophets, to put an end of disputations and to provide clarity and context.
Good luck in your own search for truth. Happy Sabbath

I know a guy who did that, and now he believes that Warren Jeffs is the living prophet, and the FLDS Church is the only true church on earth.

bowrudder well I believe you stated this in an earlier reply, but you need to check the fruits of the prophet. Good Fruit = good prophet. Joseph Smith - Thomas Monson = good fruits.
If these men have done nothing but give their lives over to serving others and not for any gain, then what else would be their motivation if it weren't for the calling they received from God?

I understand the fruit of a prophet as being prophecy (Mt 7:15-20). If their prophecy comes true, and if they don't preach a different God, then that's good fruit -- that is what a prophet is supposed to produce (Deut 18:20-22, Deut 13:1-5). And a good tree cannot produce bad fruit; a true prophet cannot produce false prophecy or teach a different God (Deut 18:20-22, Deut 13:1-5).
After that it's just an empirical question; you have to roll up your sleeves and look at the facts.
I don't know if Thomas Monson even prophecies. Does he? Does he ever say "Thus saith the Lord" and lay out some new revelation? I get the impression the prophets have fallen silent these days. They never say "Thus saith the Lord" anymore.
Some people say Joseph's false prophecy is bad fruit (e.g. the temple on the Temple Lot).
Some people will go so far as to say that polygamy was bad fruit -- marrying sisters, marrying mothers and daughters, marrying other men's wives, in violation of D&C 132 and Leviticus. Or claiming to have done more than Jesus.
I leave that up to you to sort out. But we know that Jesus is faithful and true. Always keep looking to him. He's the real deal, even if modern prophets turn out to not pan out. God bless.

You say, _"Take for instance all the different sects and denominations of CHRISTIAN churches that argue over points of doctrine, all deriving their arguments from different vs in the same bible. This is one of several reasons why God calls prophets, to put an end of disputations and to provide clarity and context."_
But the same thing could be said of the Mormon church. Have you ever wondered why Emma and Joseph III and David Whitmer, etc., didn't join the Utah sect?
Upon Joseph's death, the Mormon church split into dozens of sects, there are hundreds now. If you live in Utah you know about the various polygamous sects. Each one thinks the other is in apostasy. Each has their own living prophet. Each thinks they're the only true church.
On the flip side, there is far more unity in the Christian world than the picture you painted. Let me give an example. In college there was a group called Campus Crusade. On a Friday night you would find believers there from probably every church in town. They all worshiped together, sang together, praised the Lord. You could find issues on which they disagreed, I'm sure, but they all agreed on the basics. There was unity in diversity, true fellowship.
If you went to a state university you know what I'm talking about (Campus Crusade, Intervarsity, Fellowship of Christian Athetes, etc.).

bowrudder yes Christ is faithful and guess what every prophet since Adam has testified of? That the gospel is true, that there is a plan and their main responsibility as a prophet is to teach those details. And then they warn through prophecy if need be. No prophets have not fallen silent these days my friend.
It is ironic that you said earlier that Mormons follow a man instead of the bible, but the bible was written by men (prophets) and I find it even more ironic that in the bible it says that God doesn't change, and the whole pattern that evens brings us the bible is the passing of the torch from one prophet to another.
Then it came to the greatest prophet and Saviour of the world, who designed a different engine to spread the gospel message beyond Israel (built on a foundation of prophets and apostles) but the world denied it by killing those men.
So a perfect God and an unchanging God after teaching us in his way since time began just says at that point," forget it children you figure it out" and just leaves it to us to sort it out through scripture that has passed through bureaucracies and counsels of men that never even claimed proper authority (which the bible says no one can claim this honor himself, God has to give it to you...so you can't get it by going to school or any way other than being called of God). Scripture that was voted on or some left out for the sole purpose to blind men and leave only partial truths.
No my friend we follow Jesus Christ, we can read his dealings in the past through ancient scripture, but we try to share the message that God loves us just as he loves all his children and he has a prophet to lead and guide us just like he has loved and guided all the other past generations... So long as there are those that will accept the message. And it's as you say there are many.
But his plan has requirements for salvation and that is what a prophet has authority to not only reveal but to perform.
Those off chute branches after Joseph died did not follow what he the prophet said to do and they assumed honor by lineage like a king and presumably gave it to Joseph's son. But that is not how the church was established by Christ both when he was on the Earth or when he restored it through Joseph and he even said as much.
But brother I'm glad you have found common fellowship because arguing doctrine in a contentious tone is not of God even it is correct doctrine. So keep up your studies and continue to look for truth laid out in the scriptures and I would invite you to listen to the talks given in this last session of our general conference and judge for yourself. God bless you too.

@@ethandenton3393 have you read the Book or Mormon? Just curious. You can clearly see they are different, but also VERY similar! They all teach about Christ, and how to learn of Him, and how to grow closer to Him.
They are both (Bible and Book of Mormon) testaments of Jesus Christ, the living God. It actually has some science and History to it, that can prove it.
      Great question!

That was a great video. I don't follow Josephs Smith though. Those who follow false religion are not saved. Watch Alph Lukau, TB Joshua, Val Wolf and Mark Herman they all do deliverance and heal and they are true prophets.

I believe Joseph Smith is a true prophet. Just curious, why do you not believe in Joseph Smith? Though all the people you mentioned are great people, they are not the true prophets. Today our Russel M. Nelson is our prophet, because he was called upon God to do so.
If you have any questions, let me know!

Ehhh... the prophet just helps God. Without God there would actually be no prophet. Joseph Smith became a prophet because God told him to. God is alive, and because of Him, we have prophets to guide us.
I recommend watching God's Not Dead, or God's Not Dead #2, if you haven't seen them already. They will help.
