- Located in the county of Cambridgeshire, and around five miles east of Peterborough, is the town of Whittlesey.
Prior to the draining of the Fens, which began in the 17th century, Whittlesey was originally an island. Sometime around the 1st or 2nd century AD, the Romans constructed the Fen Causeway. This measured up to 18 metres wide and linked Peterborough to the west with the village of Denver in Norfolk to the east. Whittlesey was situated along this causeway.
At the heart of the town is the Church of St Mary. This is believed to date from the 13th century, with a 14th century nave and a 15th century tower complete with its 52-metre (171ft) tall spire. Across the road from the church is the Butter Cross. This dates from the late 17th century, and is a typical example of a buttercross of its time, i.e. a structure providing shelter for farmers whilst selling their dairy products at market.
Prior to drainage, the fens consisted of several shallow lakes. The largest was Whittlesey Mere. This had proved difficult to drain on account of it being situated below sea level. It wasn't until 1851 that the Mere was eventually drained. The natural fauna and flora had long since disappeared anyway on account of it getting progressively shallower over time - being only 2 feet deep just before drainage.
In 1847 the railway arrived in Whittlesey, courtesy of the Eastern Counties Railway. The station to this day features an older spelling of the town's name, i.e. 'Whittlesea'. It is situated on the Ely-Peterborough Line.
