9 most underrated Japanese engines video in one of the most underrated youtube channel.
As much as I love Honda's I4, I must say, Honda definitely knows how to build V6 engines. The J35 is an engine that has so much potential. While it's a SOHC architecture, it out performs most DOHC variants with the same displacement. It's a shame Honda never really made a 9000 rpm screaming V6 or I6.
See the C30A\C32B from the NSX Type R. Its a 290 hp V6 that revs past 8000 RPM (I think). Not as high, but still packs a punch!
The VH45DE is an astonishing engine! So powerful, rev-happy and reliable.
The J-series definitely doesn’t get enough recognition, I think

You forgot the Nissan SR16VE, 1.6 pushing 200HP N/A, engine is found in the Nissan Pulsar VZR N1

You forgot something interesting about CA18DET, its basically a RB engine minus two cylinders.
"horizontal" isnt an engine, you dont even know what horizontal means. Its longitudinal engine in S chassis and you tried to be funny and failed as CA18s also come as transverse. Word transverse is synonym for horizontal, and there is none transverse RBs. I have taken apart CAs before so I know what I`m talking about.

Damn, I wish people mentioned the Toyota 1UZ-FE, it's a brilliant motor. It's a 4.0L N/A V8, producing 290 HP on it's own already which isn't bad, it's absolutely bulletproof, with engines with over 250k miles but run like it's new. And with a few modifications you can make some serious power. I wish it was recognized more.

I remember a member on a Camry forum swapped a 3SGTE motor into his early to mid 90s Camry 4 cylinder, that thing was nice.
A friend of mine has achieved over 1100bhp on a Honda H22A7 stroker with now 2.7 litre and on 50psi of boost, he's also putting it into his EJ9 on see, pretty ridiculous, and it has also more torque than a K series would have on the same amount of power btw

Undersquare engine- they make lots and lots of torque compared to the JZ.
3S-GTE is surely not underrated since it's one of the most used engine by toyota in rally challenges back then, and is capable of 1000HP when tuned. You should've instead changed 3S-GTE with 1ZZ-GE since it's one of the most underrated toyota engine coz low power but very tuneable and reliable.
SR16-VE is also worth to mention IMO, especially the N1 version

Very true nobody talks about 1ggte or 4G93 also 2uzfe is nice and 1FZ out of the petrol landcruiser , the RD28 (diesel RB) ,FJ20, 6g74 and many others
Also, the 3S-GTE was the engine used by Toyota for their GT500 Supras until 2003. So yeah, we can't call it under-rated.

I feel the 2ZZ is underappreciated and might have been included on this list.
Though I don't consider the 2GR series of engines from Toyota to really be underappreciated/underrated, I almost feel they deserve a "toot" given Honda's V6 was on here. But, eh, maybe not. ;)

The 2GR is severely underrated, even more so than the J35 engine.
3RZ. These came in the American Tacoma, a 2.7L 4 cylinder from hell. Outlaw dirt oval used these naturally aspirated while Ford and Chevy use V8s. Paradise racing use it in there 6 sec 200+ mph drag car. And the bottom end is totally stock pushing over 1500hp. But aftermarket is very weak.

Some other underrated tuning engines are the Nissan GA16DE, CG series VE30DE Honda Dseries Daihatsu JB series and literally any Toyota engine

Aaron Leth yes probably the most underrated engine of all time just because it’s very small, but you have to admit 118 hp is very impressive from 700 cc engine
Blake Parker Yeah it is, also did you know that a company called "Halfway" tuned the DB-DET and got 140ps out of it? I find that the most impressive. Just search Halfway Copen on yt and watch one of the best motoring vids. I find it quite impressive.
Nice content there. But this video def needs a part two as there are plenty more underrated engines out there in the wild. The 1 and 2ZZ engines are underrated engines when compared to the 3SGTE. And not to forget the 2GR V6 powering the Lotus and Lexus cars.
The 1GZ FE is the legendary V12 from Toyota which gets forgotten if not for a wild V12 swap in New Zealand and Smoky Nagata's Top Secret Supra twin turbo V12 monster.

My H22A swapped 94 prelude Si is a k killer. Makes 230whp practically stick with a tune. Super reliable been beating on it coming up on 7 years now

1GZ-FE?? I mean it's already seen in many vids of yours but it's underrated coz it's only made for the Japan only Toyota Century and it's the only V12 from Toyota plus you can make it sound like a Zonda if tuned properly
Philip Fox 2.0 Top Secret's Supra use this engine and tuned it to 900hp, twin turbo

Aside from lack of aftermarket support, the other problem with the VH45 is its size. Making swaps a little more difficult than say, a 1uz or LS. And its a shame too because unlike the 1uz it actually uses a timing CHAIN and not a BELT. And imo a chain is essential on a vvt-equipped engine. Then it wont destroy itself from a broken belt.
toyota 2gr fe v6 is underated too in my opinion.when i put 93 or higher octain gas it seems to gain both power and low end pull
The ka24de has a REALLY good port design. But the crank and block start arguing at high rpms.

On a totally unrelated note we tried running a (scrapped) Skoda Felicia 1.3 MPI on full throttle without oil/water and it ran *just over 8 minutes* before the catalytic converter caught on fire and the engine had to be shut off.
So there it is, the ultimate engine.
Very nice video, I always thought that these engines were mainly ignored due to the fact that all of them are now old engines and performance parts are now just too much effort to find, plus new engine are much more advanced in technology and can easily be upgraded to get massive numbers.

i think sr20det could fit in there. Mines mostly stock besides a mishimoto intercooler and a turbo off a later model sr, and it makes almost 400hp no problem.
Thank you for mentioning the H22. It's an incredible engine and when tuned properly, can make over 100 HP per liter Naturally Aspirated.
Acura TL Type S owner checking in to say the J35 is vastly underrated. $4,000 worth of chassis and engine mods and you've got a $10,000 car that gives Evo's and STI's a run for their money, all while paying half the insurance they pay with all the reliability they wish they had.

I've used h series Honda motors for the longest time, they're closed deck motors so they can make stupid hp without cracking sleeves, 2 engines that I think are highly underrated from Japan is the 1uz-fe from Toyota and the j series from Honda. I've seen both make over 700 hp when boosted on stock internals

I am an American who has watched the big 3 brands quality go straight down hill since 2007. The more I research toyota is the most reliable vehicles on the planet currently. Vw, and nissan are not terrible in the USA also.

I've seen all those engines shut down, with my 40yr old L28 powered 280C passing them by. Coming from someone living in a country where JDM is our only option.

Speaking from experience, the sr20det isn't all it's cracked up to be. They have some golden builds that just seem to exceed any expectations, but the sr swaps almost always have more issues than anticipated. Don't get me wrong, I loved my blacktop sr20 but looking back, I wish I would've went with a rb20 or 25. I did this build a decade ago and things have changed quite a bit since then.
If you're swapping into a 240sx, just keep the ka24 and run that thing into the ground until you're ready for a ls swap.
Visio Racer should have mention the 3uz fe engine, the 1jz ge engine, 2gr engine and etc.
Its a JZ engine, therefore it isn't underrated one bit.
You know what's CRAZY?? Before I watched this video I saw this Celica GT convertible swapped with a 3SGTE for sale my area and an hour later it's in this video, the very same car!
I think there should be a part 2 of some sort to this. 4E-FTE from the Starlet can actually get 400 hp without problems (although you might want to change the gearbox), i've also heard that someone managed to tune a 1NZ-FE from a Yaris to get about 500 whp with a turbo. There's also the L28 which was very popular among Japanese tuners but pretty much unrecognizable outside Japan. 1KD-FTV has also got some potential too. It's somewhat popular in where i live and could push somewhere about 300 hp no problem.

Also i would like to add that the SOHC VG30ET from the Z31 300ZX has some potential too, i don't know if it's underrated or not, but both the DOHC VG30DETT from the Z32 and VG30ET from the Z31 has some potential. Also heard that the SOHC L15 Honda engine from the Honda Jazz/Fit has some potential as well
Hershel Nightsbane Yes it is. The L28 is from the 280Z, most popular one that was used by the Japanese tuners back then was the S130Z, which is the 2nd generation of the Nissan Z
the vg30e is a reliable unit, i have one, but really slow
even the turbocharged model isnt powerful
corvette 86_97 Well it's only a single turbo and only has around 210ish hp when new so there's no surprise about it being slow for modern standards. Although, there's a VG30ET modified by Nissan to be used in one of those Group C race car and produced about 1000 hp if i remember it correctly, so the VG does have some potential to it
Left out the 2GR-FE. Those V6 Camrys with these are sleepers and plus Lotus put a supercharged version in the Evora.
First of all, thanks for the video VisioRacer. What about the Mazda B engines? (specially the BPT equipped in the Mazda 323 GT-X and Ford Laser and the BPD equipped in the Mazda 323 GT-R). They have got a reputation of reliability and easily tunable. Even the NA versions in the MX-5 allow to be turbocharged (with a low pressure boost, or course).
Pity they'd always spit 3rd gear unless you had a GTR or GTAE. Or you Evo-swapped the gearbox (look up AL4SPN)
2:55 No, trust me... The CA18DET sadly isn't reliable, even without mods. That's why even in Europe people swap them for SR20s.

No rod bearing failure ? It happened to some friends eventhough they took care of their 200sx and it seems like it's a pretty common issue with this engine

Cyka InAss I don’t remember how much boost he was running exactly but I’d guess it’s somewhere between 20psi-25psi (medium boost) and he’ll turn it up to probably 30psi to make 1000hp
TheOne AndOnly i think its around 20-22 since the previous turbo gave up at 25psi
It gave up because it was sitting open in the shop for weeks and dirt and metal shavings got into the bearings

Forgot to mention that the CAs heads were later developed for the RB series
Worth mention nissan VQ35/37(400HP all motor 1500HP turbo), VK56 (800HP all motor 1200HP Turbo), toyota 3UR (2000HP turbo)
Plenty more units that are very overlooked. Mazdas V6 KL engines, Nissans NEO VVL, Mitsubishis high revving Mivecs..
Surprised you didn't mention the Nissan VH41DE... which is the stock engine for the vehicle in the thumbnail.
There was a guy, Mac Kwok, who competed in the d1nz (new Zealand's national Drifting championship), with an s13 silvia that had a twin-turbo vh41de, making about 600 hp. There are a few videos CZcams if you're interested. It sounds very nice.
can you talk about transmissions? Everyone are all about engine but forget that without a transmission, you dont go foward!

I'd really love to take my Honda Odyssey minivan and build up the J35 into a single turbo V6 build, and see if I can AWD convert it sourced from other similar Honda chassis's like the Ridgeline, MDX, Pilot or the TLX Type-S, which I believe the TLX Type-S as a 6-speed manual with the AWD, I think. Either way, this is one of my dream builds to turn my car into a supercar killer!! I may just be talking nonsense here, but I do hope to at least achieve this with the Odyssey

The vehicle on the video cover is a 96-04 acura rl (honda legend) it had the a c35a engine that’s not mentioned in this video.
Not all Honda J series had VCM like the pilot you showed was a 2WD with the J35Z1 but a 4x4 which had a j35A9 did not have VCM and most pre 2005 J series didn’t have it at all

The 3s-gte was used in some Group C Toyotas, and on the gt500 supra, before switching to a v8

The VH 45 DE is nice enough, but the VK 45 DE is newer and has more power out the box. What's more, many VQ 35 are interchangeable with it, as they are sibling engines. Problem is that they're rare, only appearing in the somewhat unsuccessful Infiniti M45 and Q56/Q70 sedans.
Funny I blew the b series in my rally integra this weekend. Gonna swap a h22 euro r into it. Half the price of a type r with great power and torque. With the b series you have to spend the whole time on the edge making the motor scream. H22 not so much.
OutlawUniverse love H22, but be ready for some difficultg if you want to really push the engine
Joshua Barkey I'm keeping it stock so hopefully it's more reliable then the b18. Plus it comes with a close ratio lsd gearbox. Should have 70-80 more hp as well.

The 3s engine was very common in the altezza which is rwd, and there are quite a few other s series engines that we're rwd
