アンチェインド メロディーは 1955年の刑務所の映画「アンチェインド」の曲として作られ、トッド・ダンカンが歌った。刑務所で愛しい人を思う男心を描いたこの歌は、20世紀に最も録音された曲の1つであり、録音したアーティストの数は 670人に登り、また多言語で 1,500以上が録音されている。その中での最高峰は 何と言っても1965年にリリースされたライチャス ブラザーズのバージョン。
ライチャス ブラザーズは、1963年にボビー ・ハトフィールドとビル・メドレーによって結成された米国のミュージカル デュオである。アンチェインド メロディは ボビー ・ハトフィールドが歌い、最初 彼は書かれている通り２度録音した。しかし後で戻ってきて、曲の最後の「君の愛がたまらなく恋しい…」の部分を 書かれているより遥かに高く歌い直した。
ということで、この曲の有名なクライマックスは、書かれている通りではなく、ボビーが歌い直したバージョンなのです。

ビル・メドレーはこの曲でピアノを弾いた。「こんなにヒットすることが分かっていれば、もっと良いピアノ奏者を連れて来たんだが…」と後に語った。
この歌では 刑務所生活する者を「孤独な川」と比喩している。海を愛に例え、全ての川は いつの日か海に注ぎ込む、と希望を抱き、いつかその愛に至り、一緒に居られる日が来ると信じている。
愛する人と一緒に居られない痛みを表現するこの歌は、愛しい人を残して海に出て、長い孤独な時間を過ごす海の男たち: 船乗りの代表歌ともなっている。
1990年 アンチェインド メロディは映画 ”ゴースト” に登場し、米国と英国の両チャートに再び現れた。1965年のライチャス ブラザーズ オリジナル版と 1990年の再録音版、両バージョン 同時にホット100に入り、８週間その座を保った。
ボビー ・ハトフィールドは 2003年に亡くなった。その後 ビル メドレーは ソロアーティストとして成功し、 映画ダーティー ダンシングの「ザ タイム オブ マイ ライフ」をジェニファー ウォーンズとデュエットした。それはナンバーワン ミリオンセラーとなり 数々の賞を受賞した。

"Unchained Melody" was in 1955 for the prison film Unchained. Todd Duncan sang the song for the film. The song is about a man in prison who misses his lover; .one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, over 1,500 recordings of "Unchained Melody" have been made by more than 670 artists, in multiple languages.Most notably by the Righteous Brothers in July 1965.
The Righteous Brothers are an American musical duo originally formed by Bobby Hatfield and Bill Medley in 1963. They recorded their version and Bobby Hatfield sang it. The famous climax in the end of this song where Bobby sings high "I need your love…” line wasn't how the song was written.
In an interview Bill Medley explained, “Hatfield did two takes of the song, then left. He would often reconsider his performance and come back later to change it, and that's what he did on this track. Hatfield returned to ask Medley, who has skill to produce records, if he could make an edit. This was no easy task, but Medley accommodated. Hatfield delivered that soaring vocal line ‘I need your love’ in the end of the song. I punched that in and he left. He returned and once again said, ‘I can do it better.’ I said, 'No, you can't.' [Laughs] . I think it's a big part of that song though.
'Unchained Melody' was recorded with far more modest expectations. It was put on the B side and the minute it was released 'Unchained Melody' just went through the roof."
Bill Medley played the piano on the song, later saying that "if I knew that it was gonna be a hit I certainly would have brought in a better piano player".
Lonely rivers = his prison life in metaphor. However, he is optimistic that he knows all rivers flow into the sea, someday. He believes that he will reach to the love someday.
Sailors took the song as their anthem that it well describes their painful feelings of being away from someone he loves while spending a long lonely time out in the ocean.
In 1990, Unchained Melody returned to both the US and UK charts after it appeared in the movie Ghost. Two versions: 1) the 1965 original Righteous Brothers single 2) a 1990 re-recording of the song. For eight weeks, both versions were in the Hot 100 simultaneously.
Bobby Hatfield died in 2003. Bill Medley turns a successful solo artist, and his million-selling #1 duet with Jennifer Warnes "(I've Had) The Time of My Life" won a number of awards.
