  • Hello friends!
I’m Elisabetta, an Italian watercolor artist with a passion and a curiosity for art supplies and pigments.
Today we are starting a new watercolor journey with Quinacridone Magenta, a beautiful, transparent, lightfast colour in the wonderful Quinacridone family of pigments.
Quinacridone Magenta is manufactured and marketed mainly with two pigments. PR202 and PR122, but also PV42 and PV19....it was very confusing for me so I tried to make it clear for you with this video.
I will also try, as usual, some mixes just to make sure how the different pigments behave.
Hereafter my affiliated links to the products swatched: they will support my channel without costing you any extra money.

Hello Elisabetta, thank you for the video! As far as I know, it’s not the pigment PR122 that is fugitive, but the fluorescent dye that makes it fugitive. 😊

Hi Martina! Thanks for the info. For those of you who do not understand, Martina is referring to Opera Rose.

The fluorescent dye's name is BV10 Rhodamine and it's mostly used in biology like microscopy, spectroscopy,ELISA Antigene tests and more.

  • @arsinoe8336
    @arsinoe8336 Před rokem +8

Opera pink is made with PR122 but it is still very fugitive because of the fluorescent dye they put in it. BV10 Rhodamine is the name of the dye and it is also used as a fluorescent dye in biology to demonstrate acid fast organisms like mycobacterium, also used in microscopy, flow cytometry, ELISA Antigene tests, spectroscopy etc. It reacts in some way with the PR122 so that it looses it lightfastness and fades especially when diluted with time in light. So I personally would recommend to only use it in sketchbook work or work that won't be sold or hung on a wall.
I wish you and your family merry Christmas 💜 hopefully you have wonderful, peaceful days with joy. 💜

I have found that if the name says the word Opera it has some florescent dye mixed in with the PR122, even though it doesn't always state that in pigment info on the tube. In the USA, in a company called DaVinci watercolor, they do this with their Opera and it only says PR122. It obviously has the Florescent dye in it but its not listed on the tube. They were called out on this fact, since shining a black light on it made it glow. They responded that they can legally add the florescent dye and not list it, if its mixed with the binder long before the pigment is added. Since its not mixed with pigment PR122 together, they don't have to list it as a pigment because its not a pigment. Its a dye. Bottom line, the companies that do this always call it some kind of Opera or Opera Rose. I shined my black light flashlight on mine that only lists the PR122 and sure enough, it glowed. The other PR122's that do not say Opera did not glow and are fine.

Thank you Renee for this info! So I assume that just the glow is fugitive? The fluorescent dye? And not the colour? It’s an interesting topic…thank you for your thorough contribution, and best greetings for a very merry Christmas!

Hi Elisabetta and thank you for this so informative video.
The Lukas one is very similar to the Van Gogh Rose colour that is a PR122 too.
Most of the Opera roses are made by PR122 and additives to make this pigment brighter, but be aware that this additive is not lightfast and when eventually will fade there will be not that much left of the brightness or of the original PR122 that is there in small quantities.
PV19 Magenta is more lightfast than PR122 but it is not so transparent either. It is somewhat more bluish and darker in its mass tones.
PR122 as a hue stands somewhere between the PV19 Magenta and the PV19 Q. Rose so it can work as an alternative for both. So if you want to go for a more minimalist palette you can cover your cool red needs with a PR122 Magenta and avoid to add the Q. Rose. But some Q. Roses have very distinctive hue so if you paint subjects that need a good variation of pink, roses and cool reds it is not a bad of an idea to add it, depending always the brands of these colours and the combination that you are going to have.
I include for instance in my colour selection the Q. Rose Magenta from Rembrandt in combination with the Q. Rose PV19 from Van Gogh because the V.G is warmer and lighter in its mass tone . This way I cover the warm and the cool spectrum of the lighter rose/pink tints that I can't cover with any of the reds that are even warmer.
Happy Holidays to all of you wherever you are. I wish you to have a great time in good health and with a lot of creativity. :) :)
