    You guys will never know how important this song was to a whole generation. You guys are lucky enough to grow up in a time where mental health is taken seriously. My generation did not have that luxury. We were told we were too young to have real problems, we were too young to be depressed, and that we needed to just get over it. We were not heard. This song was instrumental in saving a lot of people. This song gave words to what some of us were feeling and let us know that we were not alone. A lot of people who hear this song for the first time think its sad and depressing because its about suicide, but to my generation, it was liberating. It gave us hope. It let us know we had allies and that at least 1 person out there knew what we were going through. I love seeing you guys getting into this kind of music and realizing its not just noise and that metal and rock has depth and meaning. Keep it up!!

      Metallica has a few songs that got me through my depression in my 20's. This song was one of them. About 5 years ago, I crocheted a Stevie Nicks Duster sweater. It starts out white, going into gray and eventually black. I named the sweater Fade to Black.

    James Hetfield was 14 when his mother died. His father had left them, he left a note and just left. His parents didn’t believe in medicine. They were Christian scientists. His mother died of cancer, James and his sister just watched her fade away. There was no funeral. James is a pure genius imo for his writing.

    This song made me cry and gave me home at the very same, the first time I heard it. This is one of a handful of songs that will get me emotionally every time. A lot of people made the mistake that this song was about suicide, but it was the depths of depression that can lead to suicide. I still remember the day I first heard this song, I was hanging out at my best friend's house after school, and he just got this album a couple of days ago. I broke down for a couple of minutes during the harmony and solo, because I felt that depression in my teen years. They say that depression is rage turned inside, and during the solo, its just constant building anger and rage and frustration.... such a wonderful song.

    Fun Fact: This song was written about how they were feeling after most of their gear was stolen from their Uhaul. They didn't literally want to die, but obviously they were depressed about it and wanted to "die" figuratively. Like, how if you've had a shit day and you're like "Ugh, I just wanna die". 🤘🤘

  • @bobhawke7373
    @bobhawke7373 Před rokem +22

    I've always interpreted it this way.
    The solo is the man dying.
    The ever increasing drum beat is meant to represent his dying rapid heartbeat and then it just all fades away. I rate Fade to black as one of the great musical pieces.

    • @evilestmonkeey
      @evilestmonkeey Před 7 měsíci

      Gotta disagree. Respectfully. That last solo feels like a man standing on the ledge with his heart racing as he prepares to jump and maybe, just maybe having a moment of clarity and fade out is his heart calming as he climbs down and goes home. Might not be what the band felt but it feels right to me.

      "Now I will just say goodbye........goodbye"
      With the emphasis on the fading goodbye sounding like it's too late and all over now.

Even though there's no "happy ending" with the lyrics, the song itself is a triumph, because they channeled that pain into creating something beautiful and and powerful!
