Richard Wayne Penniman, better known as Little Richard, was born on December 5, 1932, in Macon, Georgia. He was the third of twelve children in a deeply religious family. His father, Charles "Bud" Penniman, was a church deacon and brick mason who also ran a nightclub, while his mother, Leva Mae, was a devout member of the Pentecostal church.
From a young age, Richard displayed a flair for the dramatic and a natural talent for music. He grew up singing in the church choir, where his powerful, raspy voice first garnered attention. Despite his family's religious background, Richard was drawn to the vibrant, secular music scene, influenced by blues, rhythm and blues (R&B), and gospel music. He began performing in local talent shows and nightclubs, quickly gaining a reputation for his energetic performances and flamboyant stage presence.
