Swedish Mauser
#fueledbynature #gun #mauser - Jak na to + styl
You can cut it down to 18" by law. 18.5" is for semi auto to stay non-restricted (cut or replacement); if you were to find (or get one made) a brand new barrel manufactured to pretty much any length, as long as you stay over the overall length of 26", it would also be non-restricted.
Ohhh ok, thanks for the clarification, So I could get it to 16" as long as the whole rifle is 26" . I'm loving these even more... :)
@@WildBushGrit as long as you don't cut it down under 18", yup. Really needs to be a manufactured barrel to that length.
These are very nice rifles. From what I've read, the Swedes even used specific high quality metals to produce these rifles. I love my 6.5 x .55 Swedish rifle and yes, the design and craftsmanship is exceptional.
I confess, I only have four Swedish Mausers, a 1911 full military M96 in 6.5x55 , a 1952 FN-action 270 and two "modern" Husqvarna modified Mauser actions from the 1950s in 7x57 Mauser and 270.
Jan Åkerman , a very good hunt and gun writer he had several,on m96s , he wore out one receiver with 4-5 6,5 barrels . So the last barrel made it a loaner rifle . It had taken much game and thousands of ammo.
Good video! And explanation! I've just bought a 6,5x55 swedish mauser, all original... man, it was love at first sight. Enjoy yours! Greetings from Argentine!
Right on! I love all 6.5s Great choice you've made!
I have 5 rifles. 3 M96 based and 2 98's. All Husqvarnas and Carl Gustavs. Bought the 3 96's in a bundle for 100dollars back in the day! One of the 98's is a FN and one is a German war based one. Oldest is from 1899 and newest from 1946. Would never buy any other action. They are so good!
3 for 100$! Woah! Oh man, I cherish mines. I don't know for how long, they were almost banned last year in Canada. -sigh-
The 46 in the video is the first generation of the 46 made between 1927-1937. 1937 Husqvarna started to produce the 146, m98 actions where bought from FN, still in the same caliber, 9,3x57 except a small series(227 exemplar was made) in caliber 9,3x62( I have one of those). Under the second war FN couldn’t deliver actions so Husqvarna started to produce the 46 with its in-house made m96 actions again. This time there was produced in caliber 9,3x57, 6,5x55 and again a very small series(228 exemplars was made) in caliber 9,3x62(I have one of those). The 9,3x62 was made with a different type of steel for the barrels.
The model 640 was introduced 1944. Both m96 actions and FN m98 actions can be found. Calibers 9,3x62, 6,5x55, 30-06, 308, 270 and some other was made.
Oh, thanks! I love gun history. They embed the context of their epoch, making me feel connected to the artisans of this era.
I'm from upstate NY. Back in the earlier 80s the local Husqvarna dealership had these on the wall. 9.3x62 was a common caliber in my area(used for deer, bear, elk up north). Even more common then 30-06 at the time. I've learned they had barrels made by Smith and Wesson. Really nice rifles, excellent bluing. Great value!
I picked up a Husqvarna 1600 in .30-06 about a year and a half ago. It kicks like a mule, but it's really rugged and for the price that I paid I'm extremely happy. Just need to get a recoil pad installed.
Swedish Mausers are great. There's a company that makes a small rail to replace the rear sight (no gunsmithing/drilling or anything) so you can mount a long-eye-relief scout scope and really take advantage of their accuracy. Wish the 6.5x55 round were more widely available in Canada though.
I always see 6.5x55 everywhere, sporteque.ca/en/search?controller=search&s=6.5x55 Gotta look into that rail, I might put one!
Hey! Can you point me in a direction where I could buy such a rail? I've been looking for a time
@@bergslagsbonnajakt3898 I got mine from Bad Ace Tactical. So far so good. They had a couple of different ones -- the one I got is the small one that just replaces the rear sight.
Another excellent video.., reminded my of my fathers Mauser that he had converted to 30/06 with a beautiful blued sporter barrel. Man, he dearly loved that gun. I am so glad you don't play that loud heavy metal music that has become so popular with youtube videos.
Thanks! These rifles are incredible, in 30/06 or 8x57, you can hunt pretty much anything on the planet. Your Father got taste :) Yeah Music, it has to match the context, Good song in the wrong context will just ruin a video and the viewer experience. :)
Use CIP ammo in 8mm, it get a whole different league then, and if you can find them 220 Woodleigh .
In the states we call that a truck gun. You don't have to keep a gun sock on it inside a hard gun case. It can get banged up a little and doesn't hurt the value or the function. And you are correct that the Winchester model 70 has nothing over that gun. The model 70 after all is based on the Mauser design. But there is an elegance that many of us appreciate. History too. Nevertheless, you convinced me to keep an eye out for one of those fine rifles. Enjoyed the video.
Also South African Rhino bullets have some very good 8mm
I'll look into that :) Cheers!
Amazing quality and content of the channel. Must have 10x views, the least.
I do believe that Norma still produces 9,3*57.
The last I saw and heard, is that they have no plans to cut production.
I also think that other European manufacturers still produce them.
The potatogun is in common use, both in driven hunt for boar, and I know many doghandler, that use it when going with the dog. (Moose hunting, yes we use dogs for moosehunt and have done so for the last 1500-2000yrs. Spitz dogs, jämthund, gråhund laikas and such)
In Canada you can find, rarely the 9.3x62, but I never saw the 9.3x57. I've seen these dogs at work(in videos), impressive. If it was legal here, I would certainly try to train my dog for it.
Norma is still producing ammo .
Blaser is still producing rifles (barrels) .
The caliber is not dead.
Excellent video, new around this channel but im enjoying your content. I have also a M96 in its stock config and I like it alot. A very ṕleasant rifel to shoot and accurate.
Indeed, glass smooth bolt that no one dare to replicate. Thank you! Let me know if you have any suggestions 🙂
I have a commercial m96 that im looking to build 7x57 on, theyre great rifles
Nice rifle I have one just like that and it is nice
They are beautiful rifles I have two Swede Mauser's 6.5×55. I use one a 1915 for deer. Good video.
Thanks! Indeed! I wish I knew about these rifle earlier, it would have changed how I perceive quality in a rifle.
Couldn't agree more with the opinion that the older Husqvarna rifles are underrated and excellent value. I once had what was either a model 46 or 640 in 6.5x55, and a similar swedish Stiga brand .30-06. and an original husqy M38. Regrettably I no longer have any of those, but I recently picked up an original vz.33 in 8x57 and a german sporter in 7x57, so theres always a mauser or three in the safe...
Despite having 3, I somehow feel the void of not having a 7x57 😂 it's like Pokemon, you want them all. 🤣
I bought the same type of rifle yesterday, for the same low price, following your advice. The "hype" is real - what an amazing quality rifle it is! Can't wait to test it on the range with the handloads
Which caliber you got? Check for unusual case length after firing, I have to keep the same brass to the same rifle, otherwise I need to trim heavily to be able to swap rifle.
9.3x57 it is. I realized those are the most expensive projectiles, after visiting the reloading store - Hornady is going for 2 bucks a pill :) But that is the steel core - dangerous game type
@@romanroman1975 hahah try Nosler 286gr(9.3), it's 175$ for a box of 25 pills... it's 7 bucks per shot! Aim small, Miss small, Spend large.
I am so jealous. I would love a model 46 in 6.5x55 in the condition you showed your 9.3x57 for the price you paid where I am in the states. the 9.3x57 m46 can be found in similar condition here for twice or more in the states, and the 6.5x55 chambered m46s are going for more and are much more rare. I keep looking for one that isn't drilled and tapped with a nice crest on it...but I'll likely be looking for a long time. would love a stiga too.
SHHHH I need to get a few more before the cat gets out of the bag
🤣
What about later Husqvarna M98-based sport rifles I have one chambered in 6.5x55, which will stand higher pressure ammo. They are very uncommon. I am very fond of my heavy barrel M96-based CG63 target rifle with competition sights. The original Swedish Mausers are made of really tough steel. I had to do some machining on one it is the toughest steel I have ever machined. The Swedes used high-grade steel with vanadium, which is superb, particularly considering it is 118 years old. Modern steel is easy to machine in comparison unless really high-grade hardened steel.
I think vanadium is used in tooling, indeed, my set of spanner never let me down :)
Norma offers factory loads of Oryx - not cheap though!
My friend has just like this one as moose gun.🇫🇮 It is good brush gun and Norma makes good ammo for that and maybe some german companies.I think there is not much need for make it longer ( 9.3 x 62 ) cos this is enough for moose (9.3 x 57)😅. And these are better made than the most new ones. Thanks 🤟
Absolutely, these are the OG of hunting rifles, every other manufacturers copied. These rifles were made up to a standard, not a price. Which is why so many modern rifles today are fairly disappointing. 😂
I had a commercial m96 in 9.3x62, it definitely works on moose
I'm bringing mine to bear hunt next week. 250gr TSX 2450FPS, we will see :)
@@WildBushGrit it will work, happy hunting 👍👍
Herr Otto Bock of imperial Germany expressly designed the 9,3x62 as a somewhat less prodigously expensive alternative to the Rigbys, H&H and Boss&Co rifles employed by adventurous nobility in Africa to kill potentially dangerous big game.A well placed bullet from a 9.3x62 will stop a charging cape buffalo.Since I have never seen or ever heard of a moose charging hunters I shall confidently continue enjoying my hunting expeditions with my trusty 9.3 on my shoulder.
Nice rifles… can you provide a source of where to buy FN98 model.
Happy new year
New Brunswick Canada 🇨🇦
Thanks to you and yours too! Intersurplus.com is my primary provider.
STOP! Or i just might buy one! There is a gun store that has one on consignment and I'm tempted to buy it
Go for it if the price and conditions are good! Which cartridge is chambered in?
I want one. I've been looking, for some time now, for a vintage open sight riffle to use for deer hunting. This is certainly a candidate. I think I'd go chambered in 308. I'll have start looking in the classified.
You may know this already but, for a 308 I really suggest the M98 action for the pressure. I'm sure the M96 will do, but give yourself some extra safety. :) I'm slowly converting myself to iron sight, its a really fun way to shoot.
@@WildBushGrit I didn't know about the pressure issue. Thanks. Most shooting opportunities in our area, even at Anticosti, is within 100 yd. Open sights are then sufficient and they have the advantage of never getting obstructed by fog, debris or water droplets. It also adds a bit of a challenge witch is fun. I looked around and there are not many M96/M98 on the market. Still a few months to go to find something before hunting season. 🙂
@@MaxHeadroomMax I have two website in mind, they have many in stock. I bought 2 of mine here, intersurplus.com/ , and I got the 9.3x57 here frontierfirearms.ca/
@@WildBushGrit Thanks. Exactly what I was looking for.
I'm in Canada too. Where did you find one of these for under $300? Thats an incredible rifle and zt an awesome price
Frontier Firearms, they still have many in stocks. Starting at 195$ frontierfirearms.ca/search.php?search_query=husqvarna Cheers!
Awesome, thanks man!
Got a M98 in 30-06 with scope on Intersurplus for 405 shipped, don’t know the manufacturer, maybe a Germany, there is marking ‘ST. M G’ and crown over ’N’ on the receiver.
I think its German, and probably a guild-built by one of the many German gun maker of that era. If you disassemble it, you could maybe find some marking beneath the barrel.
🙏👍
Weight is also a consideration when looking for a deer riffle. How much does it weigh?
It's about 7.3 lbs. The M96 is a tad lighter, but if you were to put an aftermarket stock, you can bring that weight down further more. My lightest rifle, for deer is a cz527, it's 5.9lbs. Iron sights!
Im planning one mounting a red dot on my 9.3x57 my aging eyes have difficulty with irons. Looking at the ballistics it’s still an effective 300m round with out excess hold over
If it’s a Mauser, please don’t do anything permanent to the rifle
@@benjidowning2609 it’s a used rifle imported from Sweden and has been already been drilled and tapped. I also own a m96 in 6.5x55 and Brazilian Mauser in 7x57 that were also modified. Original military stocks but drilled and tapped, but my m98 and zv24 are unmodified
@@albertaguidetwahl469 if they’re already drilled and tapped then, that is completely fine to add a red dot
problem is all the stocks crack on everything Husqvarna made without fail.
True, but its an easy fix, and also easy to prevent.
I disagree!
Great, now I want a husqvarna in 9.3x62. The wife is going to kill me if I buy anymore guns lol
Every time you leave the house, bring an empty gun case with you...follow me for more tips! X) That being said... you will not regret it, You will be happier man, and your wife will love you more.
@@WildBushGrit I like the way you think
@@WildBushGrit another trick is to keep checking the tracking number and get to the post office before she does. Works like 80% of the time lol
Ahaha, Here its delivered at the house, AND we both work from home. smh
Well, after hours of careful consideration I’m now the proud owner of a beautiful husqvarna 1600 series in 9.3x62.
