This song also has one of the most profound lyrics I've ever heard: Why don't you be the artist, I'll make me out of clay Why don't you be the writer, And decide the words I'll say For me to put something on the same tier as Kate Bush isn't common but I definitely feel like this song has been a hidden jewel in Ellie's catalogue for her entire career. I wish she'd bring it back in live shows.
Ellie is a great songwriter, according to her she was heavily influenced by Joni Mitchell's songwriting style. Also Kate Bush is one of her musical heroes. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND her last album BRIGHTEST BLUE, it has her best songwriting yet-- more poetic,matured,rational & poignant. (FLUX,START,CYAN,ODE TO MYSELF, WOMAN- special ones)
It was something she released before she properly recorded anything. I have loads of demo versions of songs of "Lights" and personally I prefer them :)
