@@canadiandefenceinitiative3599 I was in the 3rd year of officer training, 1 year before graduation. There things fell apart at a breathtaking speed in 1989, starting from the expulsion of the StaSi from all military bases to marching discipline being ignored. Superiors did not dare to enforce rules anymore and every day a suddenly brave and investigative media exposed new 'skeletons in the closet' of our leaders. Most GDR citizens evrn before 89 had a quite good idea that they were being lied to by their leaders. I'm not aware about large numbers of people trying fight the change that was in the air. The main disagreement was about the speed and where it was to lead.

No, they practiced that again and again to shave the time needed to reload the launch ramp.

The variant we had in Hungary also had a powerful TV camera for visual identification and tracking. We could tell airliners coming and going at Ferihegy Airport what company they belonged to, based on their colours, from 80 km away. Under the right circumstances the optics could be used to engage a target without using the main radar.

But against a lonely U2 had a much better chance. Because of pilot reports USA soon figured this out. Then comes the order if you do not see the SAM stay in formation. It didn’t rule....it was given safe areas to operate. But it was hit or miss! And part of an integrated system...as it needed plenty of warning. But it range was considerable...but required an almost overhead tracking. Deflection shooting is still an issue. So...multiple volleys were necessary. Not to be confused with the more pin point missle’s...rockets....of today. However....they are still considered a modern system...by other countries. Can’t remember the exact percentage that hit...but it wasn’t good. But all there was! And...could do considerable damage!

Soviet Union licensed it to China which supplied them to North Vietnam. It caused huge losses of USAF aircraft including shooting down a dozen B-52s over Hanoi during 1973 Operation Linebacker. Unfortunately in Vietnam it only had about a 10% success rate even when fired in pairs for higher kill probability.

The Republic of Cyprus aquired these missiles in the 1960's but because we "believe" that Greece will defend us (which it has never done) we had western pressure and we decided to leave them in Egypt. In 1974 Cyprus was invaded by Turkey but we had no air cover.

This is wrong, the radio guidance of the missile does not work how it is described in the video. The missile does not receive the location and vector information of the target from the guidance computers at the site. Those informations are gathered by a radar and after that the guidance computers create signals for missile correction which are then sent to the missile. Radio command guidance, that is how it works.
