- Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising is immensely charming but doesn't have the depth necessary to maintain its appeal.

Keep Jones at least for the reviews! He is a legend!!
They have been saying that since he announced his retirement.
Pls & thankyou 🙏
@@trendmaster0 Just curious but, seeing how young Jones is, how is this guy able to retire? Where does that money come from?
Edit: Or is the retirement program different in the US compared to EU?
@@turanx0 My impression is that hes just retiring from the industry, and not work as whole?
Could be wrong
@@turanx0 retirement age is 65 in the US. Jones just has a lot of money from the GT days. He probably made a lot of money when GT was sold back in the day, even if the site itself did eventually go down. I know Kyle and others have occasionally referenced Jones being kinda rich, but it’s something he seems to avoid talking about.
Definitely a fair take for the game! Completed it myself, about ~20 hours for the Platinum and did just about everything in it and... Yeah. Accessories/Runes don't matter for the main story, and accessories only vaguely mattered for the post-game/Hard-Mode because... Well, bosses are now hard-set to lvl 55 as are certain regular enemies. But beating the game trivializes it since you get an 'I win' accessory that, naturally, easily goes to the person who attacks the most. Which is CJ...
Which, yeah, makes sense. Out of the 3, her repertoire feels the most fun to play. Garoo takes forever to go anywhere and he still feels too plodding and slow despite his damage never outright eclipsing CJ. And Isha, while wholly unique, doesn't really get much to play with. The game's limited Rune Lenses leaves her side of combat feeling a little lacking and she never really evolves meaningfully as you upgrade her.
It was breezy, and simple. Enjoyable but... I don't know if I'd call it memorable. The story itself, when it gets out of its own way, is at its strongest with the characters playing off one another... It is just a shame there isn't more of that. There's a good bit of chuff that could have been cut away from the Side Quests that easily could have been devoted to Party Members. And while several residents tend to have a build-up and through-line? There's also several quests that just... go nowhere. A tease about a duel that is brewing between two towns folk, or a person looking for a town celebrity, or a boy who clearly likes a girl but expresses it by picking on a beloved pet... They get little nods near the end, as though we might see some payoff... But then nothing.
And it's even worse because, after doing all of the Side Missions? You get... essentially what felt to me like an endless chain of repeatable missions that go nowhere. The XP isn't worth it because a single enemy will often reward more. The money isn't worth it because by then you can make just as much off an easily accessible pot. And the rewards aren't really worth it because... consumables weren't needed for me at all, and even on hard mode I didn't really bother with any gear other than the previously mentioned auto-crit 'I win' accessory. And the story that often goes with these sidequests is just a 'Hey I know I asked for this already but... could you do it again' type of deal.
The town's growth, even, feels a little... forced. One of your first quests is about fixing a notable landmark, and yet you see nothing happen with it until the very end where it suddenly is fixed. The town just... progresses weirdly, and while some buildings will see an aesthetic change or growth, its either so little you may not notice or so grand it feels distracting.
For $15? It ain't bad! Even better if you got it for less than that, I'm sure. But it feels like a popcorn game, and not even really great popcorn. No movie theater drizzled in butter popcorn. No fluffy and well-seasoned popcorn fresh out of a popper... But some store-brand simple bagged popcorn you put in the microwave for a couple minutes, enjoy eating but hate how clearly multiple kernels didn't pop fully--if they popped at all.
Really looking forward to the future episode of the podcast where they have to figure out who said "fully throated" during a review.
I got it last night as I totally missed the Kickstarter. I cannot wait for Eiyuden Chronicle proper.
Suikoden 1 and 2 were so my jam growing up. I wish the releases were closer together though. I have faith. And this looks fun enough. Thanks easy allies!
As a backer and die hard Suikoden fan I honestly expected a mobile game for this at first, and then I expected much worse than this - the game isn't great... it's swimming for sure at best, but I think the characters are charming and the peek at the future bodes well. Hell... I even thought maybe just because it wasn't Suikoden I wouldn't end up liking Hundred Heroes that much, but Rising has given me enough to think that it'll be just fine... exceeded expectations, but yeah it doesn't stand fully on its own merits... but the price is right.
Fantastic review. Ben is the GOAT when it comes to reviews.
The art style looks so nice
Oh,wasn't expecting Jones still
@metroid yeah I know.but still didn't expect one this soon after retiring. Its a shame he can't just work from home and record from home and zoom the podcast. Hes soo young to retire
@@paulsmith9192 He just wants to work on other things and also spend time with his son/dad. He'll still pop up now and then. He just doesn't want to be stuck with weekly commitments or do his job half-heartedly.
1. Enter 'Eiyuden' into Google Translate
2. Laugh at result
Damn, this game is gorgeous! Surprisingly the art style mix is superb... Clean high resolution detailed and the enviornents are just beautiful... It's a shame I'm not sure there's enough here to be worth playing though
yup, looks like sidescrolling action RPG octopath traveller. but good graphics dont make good gameplay most the time, this is a perfect example
Been waiting for this
It feels like this missed an introduction paragraph.
Was this game not properly advertised as being basically a mini prequel for the full release game coming out next year?
I'm enjoying the game but it would be hard for me to objectively say it's a good game 😂
This game isn’t required to play the main game right? Also, nice to hear Jones still VA for reviews :3
Is this a remake or original?
And is the upcoming game original or a remake?
No, it's not required. It's kind of like a prelude to the full game, but there's no essential story that carries directly over.
I miss their red and black asthetic...😞
Still can't believe that I won't be hearing this voice for the reviews anymore.
I have been listening to it since 2009.
They’ve said Jones will stay on to voice reviews for the foreseeable future
Does anyone know a game similar to this?? I love an ARPG with town building and dungeon scrubbing
Beautiful looking game. I cannot wait for the follow-up!
Jones 😭
Excellent review. And I do not disagree with any objective point. Only that it WORKS for me so well. This game is currently my Game of The Year. I can't believe how in love with this game, characters, world, and franchise all from this 1 little game.
It was Ben's initial reactions to this game on Frame Trap that turned me on the try this game sooner than I had been planning. He made similar comments and the peaked my interest. And everything is true. Everything in Frametrap and here is absolutely true about the game and it just NAILS it for me. 10/10 I adore this game!
Damn bro, calm down.
@@Ponaru wtf? lol 😂
@@Ponaru ⚰
But I love their enthusiasm. About to make me reconsider this game.
I wish they allowed hard mode from the get go. The combat is just too easy.
I will NEVER attempt to say the name of this game correctly😩
Thanks for the review. It’s a shame the game was half baked
It looked a 6 to me.
A win for Anime!
Suikoden clone.hundred heroes the one I'm waiting for
You know is from the same creator right?
@Other Prisma of course. I was just rembering suikoden seeing this and missing it.Shame they aren't making suikoden 6
the octopath traveller graphics hooked me in, but this boring ass gameplay sure isnt hooking sht
As beautiful as the sprites are, I can't help but feel they just took assets from the mentioned upcoming JRPG and tried to make an ARPG with them. Something about the way they're animated just doesn't feel right for the style of game this is.
Why wouldn’t they take sprites from their upcoming game? They’re working on both at the same time. Save time and resources not making new sprites.
The visuals of the RPG are completely different from this. It's not the same team making the games.
It's not the same sprites.
@@joemama2499 Sure it saves money, but the animations look janky for what's supposed to be an action game instead of a turn based RPG. Particularly noticeable with CJ's run cycle, something about the camera perspective makes it look like she's got dislocated shoulders.
@@theLikou1 Hmm...that's almost a bit more depressing, as I mentioned in another reply, something about the way the sprites are done for this don't feel right. Like they were meant for a different perspective and game play style.
I made the mistake of pissing $ away on this dont make the same mistake people
Ben on frame trap gave it a 7 and now its a 6?oh,well,I've never been a fan of number reviews
He said AT BEST it's a 7, which implies it's probably more like a 6.
@Badalight u can tell he was torn with a 7.I just prefer reviews to be would u recommend it or not
@@paulsmith9192 I feel like a scale does a more accurate job of conveying how much you like or dislike something. Look through any steam review section of something rated mostly positive or mixed and you'll see so many people who voice the issue about how there's a lack of depth to their rating system because just saying you recommend it when you don't really like it 100% or not recommending it when it's not a terrible game, it just has flaws. The system itself of "I recommend this or not" just doesn't give enough flexibility. Now, I'm in no way saying everything needs to be boiled down to a point scale, but I think there needs to be more depth than just a yes or no system. Because I think in the case of this game, the answer would probably a "I dont recommend this", which I don't think is totally fair to any game that is good but just has some glaring flaws.
@Vailathi reviews are definitely complicated. I mean only review that really matters is the individual. but, still good to hear others opnion.but I'm getting the game cause I want to support the team and closet thing to suikoden before hundred heroes
@Vailathi to add on the review. I don't mean just say recommend or not and that's it.I mean give ur thoughts, like pro's and cons and then in the end,say if u the reviwer recommend it
Got the platinum in the game and I'll say that it is a six. The story is nonsense and combat bland, repetitive, no voice acting.
Guys, your new logo icon is...just...not doing it for me. The new font and look is alright in the intro but the colors...no. I used to know immediately to trust the red and black when I saw it in a feed or search. Now I mentally and subconsciously dismiss it when my eyes glance over it.
Yay first comment
Seems obvious they barely played this game. It's rather enjoyable once all 3 players are available.
You're so hateful. The game is repetitive, but as a companion game, born from a stretch goal, it's perfectly fine.
Indie games need to go!!
Just... don't play them?
What a dumb fucking take
