Very interesting. Please allow me to interrupt. I do research on how Buddhism disappeared in Bihar. I realized it never disappeared from Bihar. Buddhists simply failed to research Indian Buddhism. They looked at Buddhism through the sphere of their own cultures searching for only the Buddha. Buddha had a myriad of names in different villages according to his teachings there. Example. His favorite teaching was 'Lust and desire causes pain. Remove lust and desire, and pain is removed'. Translated into Bihari (where the Buddha story took place) it is DHUKH HARAN meaning to remove dukha. Three dozen villages pray to DUKH HARAN Baba. Its clear that DUKH HARAN Baba is none other than the Buddha. Problem is Buddhists are searching only for the Buddha. In the real Vaishali the Buddha begged for alms. The locals there pray to 'BHIKHAINI' Baba (Beggar Baba). Bhikhaini was mispronounced by Buddhists as Bhikshu. Who is BHIKHAINI Baba. The Buddha no doubt. But people are searching for a man called Buddha. In the real Vaishali, in Beluha the Buddha suffered a sickness and felt he had grown old. The locals pray to 'BURHA' Baba (Old Baba). Who is BURHA Baba. The Buddha no doubt. In the real Vaishali the Lichavies pressurized Buddha not to die. They trailed him to Bandagawan pressurizing him not to die. To put pressure in Hindi is DABESHWAR. Three dozen villages around the stupa where Buddha gave the Lichavies his patra, the villagers pray to Baba 'DABESHWAR NATH' meaning the man who won the pressurizing game. It was the the Buddha no doubt as he gave the Lichavies his patra and succeded in sending them back. But Buddhists are searching for the Buddha. In Pidhauli (Vaishali) the local deity is Bardiha Baba. Bardiha means the Baba who didn't allow us to stay where he was staying. Bardiha Baba is the Buddha no doubt because he didn't allow the crowd of Lichavies to stay with him in Bandagama. Forgive me for commenting out of the topic. I just wanted to impart this information to you.

Sunyam is the term in sanskrit used to represent the "infinity" (from which physical creation begins as big bang) as well as "zero" (from which the number system or mathematics start), both of course after "maya" puts a hypothetical circular border in any region of infinite space. Thus physics and mathematics, the two foundational stones of creation comes out of sunyam

As usual very exciting lecture by Maharaj. In my view Advaita and Prasangika are very similar based on my learning from online classes of Geshe Dorji Damdul. There were three turnings of the wheel of dharma and Buddha targeted different audiences of different capacities in each turning. The second turning had the highest teaching of emptiness on which Madhyamaka/Prasangika is based. Buddha in one of the turnings has said that all the three realms are minds. He also has said in Dashabhumi sutra, “Mind arose from delusion and karma”. So just as sruti pramana is the final authority for Advaitins, the sutras of Buddha's teaching is the final authority for Buddhists. Both chittamatra and Prasangika in conventional analysis say everything is subjective (except for the nuances of reflection in mind vs projection of mind). Chittamatra consider mind as mirror and all objects as reflection in the mind, they deny externality. Prasingaka do not deny externality from the perspective of individual mind but see all objects as projection of mind within conventional analysis. Chittamatra finally take mind as intrinsic existence whereas for prasangika the mind is also empty. As Maharaj mentioned mind is dismantled by prasangika using whole and part analysis, the discerning mind is made of non discerning segments. As Maharaj mentioned Prasagnikas in their meditations still use terms like clear light of the void, dharmakaya etc. Also they talk about non-dual awareness in the ultimate analysis, they say the supreme is seen in the ultimate analysis. Now Prasangikas outside of their practices might not name the reality but I am sure they do not think this realization is like that of a rock, which neither knows itself nor it knows the truth. So when prasangika talk of emptiness in ultimate analysis, it is not just philosophy. The lowest among the buddhist sages, the Arahats, actually experience emptiness (the world and body mind complex disappears). Now experience is probably not the right word as there is no experiencer left in this non dual awareness. So the pure awareness cannot be ruled out.
Prasangika first resolve everything to the mind in conventional analysis and then dismantle the mind in ultimate analysis. This technique is used by Gaudapada also in Karika (both waking and dream is combined into dream). Both experienced (object) and experiencer (subject) dismissed, the Self shines in full glory. I found the example of lamp used by Yogacara (Chittamatra school) very very powerful. The only mistake he did was he applied the example to the inert mind. I personally did not find the refutation of self luminosity by using knife example (knife cannot cut itself) or a gymnast cannot stand on his own shoulders at all convincing. Light is subtler than the knife, and knife is gross, there is no comparison. If I say Self is like space, beyond pure and impure and someone comes and refutes it with the logic that water can be pure and impure so Self can also be pure or impure. This makes no sense, comparing something so gross with something beyond subtle does not make sense. The example of dream itself to knock off the intrinsic nature of the individual mind is sufficient as both Chittamatra and Prasangika take mind as an individual mind which is associated with the individual body, this individual mind of a dream body is dismissed on waking up. Their mind is not equivalent of an all encompassing mind of the EkaJivaVada (single mind which itself divides into subject and object, like that of the mind of the person sleeping and dreaming) or the cosmic mind (multiple minds with a shared world as object). Self luminosity cannot apply to the mind as it is inert but definitely applies to the Self, and last but not the least for Advaitins it has sruti pramana. Self is self aware.
Advaita does a reasonable job of dismantling the objects but in my view is lacking in techniques to dismantle the mind. Buddhist have quite a few tools to dismantle the mind and can be useful to Advaitins. Chandrakirit’s Madhyamakavatara delves in these techniques to dismantle the mind.
Here are some sutras from Madhyamakavatara as reference.
For if the Buddha knew the world to be mind only
and, on that basis, did engage in the rejection of matter,
why then would the Great One proclaim in the same sutra
that the mind was born from delusion and karma? 6.88
It is the mind that constructed the vast diversity
of both the domain of sentient beings and their universe as well.
    The Buddha said that all beings are born of karma;
there is no karma without the mind. 6.89
While remaining within the truth of the everyday world,
all five aggregates known to the world do exist.
When we speak of the arising of the gnosis of suchness,
then, for the yogi, these five aggregates will be no more. 6.91
So if there is no matter, do not hold that there is mind,
and if there is mind, do not hold that there is no matter.
In the wisdom sutras the Buddha rejects them equally,
but in the Abhidharma he speaks of the existence of both. 6.92

The Emptiness of Buddhism is simply the Pure Spirit of Hinduism, Spirit free from objects and phenomena and therefore empty. Thus, the essence of reality is indeed Emptiness or Pure Spirit. In fact, however, Buddhists need to answer some questions that are difficult for them. 1. If there is no self, then for whom does the false idea of self appear or disappear? 2. If there is no self, then who needs to come out of the suffering of Samsara to enter the bliss of Nirvana? Yes, there is indeed an Atman: It is conscious Emptiness itself.

      1. To the non self
      2. There is no samsara or nirvana, its our entrapment into the ignorance of ultimate reality that leads to samsara and freeing from it is nirvana.
The very brahman is svabhav shunya. So shunyam or brahman are the ultimate reality empty of all worldy description. Same essence but different naming.
This is so far my understanding of vedanta and madhyamaka.

@Мария Стефанова I just follow the breath. I used to count my breaths but now I don't count. I'm not very good to be honest and I often find myself thinking about other things. It's quite slow progress but it's good to develop a routine. I can focus for much longer than in the past and am happier in general, I think.

Namaste Swamiji, thank you so much for this insight, for long i have wondered what exactly Buddhism was, why they needed shunyam ,niravana at all, after listening to you, i also watched the tibetan monk debate that you referred to, and suddenly it clicked that this is the route to Shaolin defence system, and its a way to defend ourselves against the karma of physical violence, ie how to retaliate without incurring karma..i mean who perpatrates the violence on innocent people, not directly but through adharma, ie by unfair means, the ashuras, the cowards who have manipulative minds, so its a mind stunning process, where the attacker's mind itself gets confused and stunned into inaction,"babhayasa mati" but this needs purity of intention, if personal revenge etc is intended then it again goes into karmic cycle,so these mind excercises, through logic, zen, etc.The question is why did Adi Shankaracharya debate them, then? I think likely he debated the fake buddhists who were advocating violence, like his cousin devdutta who shoots a swan.

Actually Buddhism was already at decline at that time in India, because Buddhism became a mess filled with various vamacharas, some negative customs etc.
Vedic religion was at rise, Mimansaks (people who believe in th3 authority of Vedas but not the God) defeated many Buddhists, Mimansakas were defeated by Adi Shankarâcharya.
Buddhism that time was not the Tibetean Buddhism, it was some different kind of Buddhism

Crackin' good lecture. Mmmm mmm the good stuff. The earlies. And the dialectic as it proceeds through the ages. And it's such a heart matter, so meaty and chunky and beefy. Like right in there. And such an expansive view. My, how pretty it is. And thank you many times over Swami. I keep coming back to these lectures many times to clarify. And to learn new perspectives. Many doors to the temple. We are truly blessed to be in the presence, so to speak, of a master scholar monk. But I wonder about that reference letter. What did she exactly say that they had to confiscate and hide it in the archives at Widener? Mwa ha ha ha. LOL.
