- On Tuesday April 4, 2017 Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare made his farewell speech as he retires from the public service and politics.
Sir Michael was Papua New Guinea's first Prime Minister, and it was exactly 49 years ago when he first walked in to Parliament, on April 4, 1968.
"Today I stand here as an optimistic Papua New Guinean proud of our many accomplishments as a nation. We progressed through many waves and changes in the world. We survived our own bad decisions and we have united at time when the world thought it was not possible to do so."
I have been crying since 26/2/2021 last Friday since his passing. Today is Monday 1/3/21 a State declared public holiday in honour of this great man.
Somare is like the father and grand father to every Papua New Guinean household. His passing will leave a big vacum that will never be filled.
I thankyou for all your service and leadership to the country. Rest in eternal peace, Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare. There will never be someone like you.
You stand out and alone. The brightest of the star in the Southern Cross.
This person is an old man but he has the brain of a young and an energetic man. how wonderful was his leadership even before independence. the moment PNG was declared the state of its own to be free and rule in rights specific to our cultures in diversity, that dramatic occasion confirms HOW PASSIONATE his leadership was earlier on. what a great father. we would embrace him in our life long journey until death. May God bless you grand Chief.

Thankyou for Adapting the Constitution when you did and giving us the Sovereignt and Independence while 90% of the country especially the Highlands were still in Ass-Tangets, And from 2002-2011, the long but successful process of placing us permanently in the World Financial Markets and giving the People of Papua New Guinea Economic Independence with the initiation of the inclusion of our Minerals along with our Other Natural Resources and Agriculture as the lifeline of our Country and the driving force behind our Economy. We've come a long way in such a short time and grown immensely in all aspects.
