One of the things that drives me crazy about DSP is that his mindset is why games get dumbed down to these preschool level mechanics. The day that GOW developers used him as a metric for how to make their games going forward explains why in Ragnaraok the side characters give you 5 seconds before telling you how to solve a puzzle.

Radials are bugged as fuck, and pretending otherwise is silly. Not even two hours after organizing all my spells by level, and mindflayer abilities and everything I was greeted by a blank radial menu where all my illithid powers were, and my spells were no longer organized by level/type. All my beginning of day buff spells jumbled with my damage spells and summon spells. My illithid power radial vanished and I had to reapply all 15 illithid powers I had.

Even if a game doesn't explain something very well all it takes is a curious mind to wonder something and experiment, alternatively he could turn to his monitor and slowly type into Google whilst reading out loud "How...To...Talk...To...Dead...Characters...In...Baldur's...Gate...3" and there will be plenty of information, but that involves more than just saying "Now what?" and leaning in.

I had the fortune of having a brother who knew D&D cause he's played it. So translating it to the game was simpler for him and he could explain the rules and stuff to me. He's not too major into the lore. Like Mindflayers. I looked that up, he hadno idea what they were. But in simple terms, they are a race that can defined as 'evil' with extremely rare individuals that break the mold and are usually killed for being different. They takes thralls, turn people into their race and even get depressed when they have no thralls, lol.
But this game is not a game Phil will like. Period. it requires a bit of thought to understand anything. Be it abilities, or lore. Phil is not the person for this kind of game. It rewards creativity, exploration, listening and inferring information. All things Phil utterly fails to do at all. Whenever anything he doesn't understand comes up he just defaults to "Huh? What's that mean, guys what does that mean?" I chose to be a paladin with my brother, I supposed I'd be the tank. It's not complicated, just kinda annoying at times cause so many ofmy abilities are both normal and special actions. And when I really want to do things I'm very resource hungry. So it's a bit difficult. But atleast I'm the talking guy cause of high charisma.
In the end Phil will not have fun cause he's ultimatly too lazy to learn, as much as he'd say otherwise and the reward of doing things yourself is basically gone cause he will never do anything without staring at chat for ten minutes being told what to do.
He says he wants to play a game where he doesn't have to study to play it..... so he basically admitted he would rather play brain dead games? Cause paying attention, listening to what people say, read context clues is what this game is gonna force him to do. Hell games like resident evil make him have to do that. He should be playing COD if he wants a brain dead game..... excepts he sucks at that too. Reading isn't hard, all it takes is a second to read, take in the information then make a choice.

His main complaints seem to be:
    >Too many people want him to play the game (???)
    >Spellcasters are hard to use for new players (fair.)
    >The world-building is bad and he doesn't understand the lore. (???)
Coming here from the same position as someone with zero knowledge about DND. The lore is pretty clearly explained through natural character interactions and just... playing the game. The introduction alone taught me a lot that I didn't know. You do not have to sit through five hours of exposition or read 500 books (*cough* elder scrolls.) And honestly, DSP doesn't strike me as the type of person to actually care that much about the lore anyway.
not understanding how spellcasters work is something I get though. I had 3 spellcasters on my team and had no clue how to use them 😭

Divinity Original Sin 2 was the same story. DSP hated the game, but as it got decent tips he continued on. He was miserable throughout because the game kicked his ass, he constantly complained and talked shit about the game. That got tiresome for even his most faithful viewers so the support naturally dipped and he rage quit/wage quit. It's going down the exact same path with Baldur's Gate.

Ironically, the fact that he won't sit down and study how a game works is why he's stuck where he is in Street Fighter. You can learn your own character, but if you don't learn your opponent's character, then you're immediately at a disadvantage

When I first played Baldurs Gate back in 2001 I had no idea what I was doing. It was the first RPG I had ever played. My friend who introduced me to it at the time suggested I play a fighter. They are simple and easy to learn. You just hit stuff. Granted, the rules have changed a bit since 2nd edition but the principle is still the same. There is no "right way to play" in these type of games but don't be afraid to fail. Its how you learn. Reading also helps too. There is enough lore jammed into this game via notes, tool tips and other things to help you. The other great thing about BG3 is that its turn based so nothing bad will happen while you stand there. It allows you a little bit of time to think and plan.

Personally, I found the best way to learn more about DnD is to be completely clueless about it.
Pathfinder Kingmaker was my first intro to DnD and there's plenty of people to ask about lore and races and gods and what it means to be chaotic/lawful/evil/good/neutral.
Baldur's Gate 3 is a lot more beginner friendly but does the same thing. The first people introduced have nothing to do with Baldur's Gate (city). Instead, you can learn more about who they are and what they do by just talking to them.
As for combat, that one was a lot harder for me. I didn't play Gale until I was level 8 because he has too many options and I have no idea what to do with them.
But I did have fun learning more about spells using Shadowheart and later Halsin and Jaheira. When I figure out magic, Gale became a mainstay in my future playthroughs... probably won't use him until level 5.
The thing is, people shouldn't be worried about "what's good among these options". That's the part that stresses Phil out. All of these options are good but in certain context. And the questions should always be "what type of context an I going to force myself into later?". Thus, all spells are good. Just pick what's fun or funny.

24:14 Phil claims one of his dents beat BG3 several times without discovering a particular ability, then he immediately declares it a "critical" feature that the game fails to explain. The dood is obviously terrified that his regarded whales and hand-holders might stop attending his BG3 streams, forcing him to rely on his own wits and charisma to play the game and entertain his audience (gasp), or wage-quit and prove his detractors right again! Oh, the horror! 🤣

  • @bonjouritsready

He’s really focusing on the wrong things, you don’t need to fundamentally understand all the gith lore to get a basic understanding of their values. You literally just have to listen to Lae’zel speak to her and see how others speak of them as a race. Like it’s very easy to come to the conclusion of ‘oh these guys are really military focused and ruthless’. You don’t need to know all the lore to understand that, it’s made clear early. He’s a classic guide gamer, is too scared to make a ‘mistake’ that he won’t take a chance on anything. Literally, just read and make a decision. A lot of the times, even a ‘bad’ choice in BG3 leads to interesting situations

Lets pretend 50% of his audience is saying "hey, we gonna leave if X doesnt happen!"
Which option is gonna KEEP more people?
    1) telling them to fuck off, leave and you dont need their view?
    2) letting that 50% leave if they wish and just kinda ignoring or saying something passive and kind?
1 = that 50% leaves... plus some of the 50% that were staying because you basically said your fans are worthless to you.
2= at most the 50% leaves... maybe some stick around because you acknowledged and placated them with kind words...
Now... lets realize you're actually flipping your shit over at most 10%.... 90% would have stayed. But you chose option 1.
    Remember: DSP is successful

I said it before and I'll keep saying it....
There's a whole huge community who LOVE watching people playing BG3 for the first time. I've watched tons of streams and videos where people have kept most of their viewers, like, 50 episodes in! Fans' love for BG3 and BG3 content has made small streams get huge almost overnight. I've watched it happen.
So... yes... the problem is *YOU,* DSP.
Because the one thing about those little streams that blew up doing BG3 content? They were already making good content. People saw that and stuck around. BG3 got them the attention they DESERVED. And that's AWESOME. It's how this world ought to work, all the time.
So... yes... the problem is *YOU,* DSP.
