AMAZING IN ANY ERA! Whitney's talent is to work around a song with her vocal condition! She never sings a song the same way twice! She knows how to rephrase, transpose, adlib and embellish a song!
Thank you for this video. It’s sobering and liberating as a Whitney fan to hear this comparison. Sobering, because darkening and deeping of her voice really happened between 93-99. Most general fans unfairly compare 2010 Whitney to 1989 Whitney, but this is where the shift really happened. And so much in her personal life happened during Waiting to Exhale, Preachers Wife, Cinderella, that by the time we got to 99 Whitney, she is quoted, “I feel old.” Bodyguard Tour her voice is still youthful, energetic, and agile…that’s evident but this video also proves a point I’ve argued for years that she could’ve still done it. A lot of those songs were in the same key, especially her biggest I Will Always Love You. She had the power and pack to her voice. This is just the difference between a 29 year old singer and a 35 year old singer. Add the word Whitney Houston behind it and it’s still going to be great, but 35 year old Whitney you absolutely hear the “life” in her voice.
The biggest difference between these eras is ease tbh. Although I do prefer MLIYL because of her musicality, it sounds like she’s putting so much more effort into singing than years prior
Supreme! What else can you say about Whitney? She was magical and thrilling in all instances throughout the 1990s. It's true that by '99 she had lost a little athleticism and brightness from her voice, but equally the range and diversity of the material she was performing at that time was arguably the best of her career.. so it balances out in that sense. Post '00 is a different story and where its starts to get rather sad watching her rapid decline, but during her prime she was (probably still is) the worlds best.
My ranking from favorite to least favorite vocal style of tours: 1. I'm your baby tonight 91 (best era ever) 2. Moment of truth tour 87/88 3 the greatest love tour 86 4.my love is your love tour 99/00 5. Bodyguard tour 93/94 => great vocals but like that style the least (but still love it) 6. Nothing but love tour 09/10

It's bummer that Sony/Arista never released a Live DVD from any of Whitney's 1980s, 90s or 00s tours!

Interestingly enough, the way she was singing throughout the Brazil concert is actually pretty similar to her 99 style of singing.
