"Give me Chocolate" was one of their earlier songs, and while this was a fairly recent concert, I would suggest that the song worked better when they were very young, but as they matured their music matured with them. While I enjoyed the "WTF" nature of Gimme Chocolate when I saw it, I would suggest they have other songs which are far more enjoyable generally.

I'm a day late but not a dollar short. I found these guys recently and watched a bunch of the live performances. Then I looked into the background. The girls all attended the same private school together from the start. The school is not only the regular studies but it is primarily for entertainment careers. The singing, dancing, routines and public awareness were classes they had together all their lives. The primary singer was born in 97' , the other two in 99'. The lead is about 5'2". the other two under 5 feet. The other two were in the same class and paired together because of age and similar height since they were 5 years old. The band is Kami. The lead guitarist recently died after falling from an observatory while on vacation.

And that's a good thing. I was a little jarred by the heavy metal but that frivolous pop melody was SO in contrast, it kind of made the whole thing gel. I thought of what else has done this. Fatboy Slim's "Weapon of Choice" video with Christopher Walken dancing czcams.com/video/XQ7z57qrZU8/video.html sort of had the same affect on me. Cognitive dissonance that melts into humor. Yuimetal missed quite a few live shows last year and earlier this year and then ultimately left the band on October 8th 2018 due to undisclosed but serious health issues.
If you watch some of their some of their older performances you'll see that Su and Moa aren't as energetic without Yui.
The last thing Su, Moa and Yui wrote together is their tribute to Mikio: Starlight. The song is better written then most of their work and is quite emotional.
Most people forget that these girls started very young: Su at 13 and Yui and Moa at 11. They are currently 21 and 19. All the more reason fans are worried about Yui. If you watch them close enough in this performance when they start Karate the look Su and Moa exchange show how much they miss Yui.
I think it's unfortunate they have had to deal with two major blows to their band in such a short time. But they they have a great deal of talent and Su and Moa are handling it pretty well. Hopefully Yui gets better and is able to come back. If not they are still incredible.
I love Babymetal so thanks Fil for showing them love.

Get an earful of the earlier productions. "Headbanger", " Road To Resistance", "Papaya".
The musicians were best when Mikio Fujioka was playing harmonics. Gone too soon in a tragic freak fall.
More solos and a great vocal by SuMetal in "Rondo of Nightmare Live At the Budokan-Black Night" is a must-hear.
The girls started kicking serious performances when they weren't even in their teens yet.

I agree that this is a terrible video as a first intro. This one is bad since it's without Yui. Moa is doing all the secondary vocals and actions and it looks unbalanced. A better live version would be from Makuhari Messe or Buddakon. I would also throw out Headbanger or Ijime, Dame, Zettai again from either Makuhari or Buddakon as good examples as well.

    • @Subjectivity13
      @Subjectivity13 Před 5 lety +10

No, that's really not what he was looking for. As he explained in the beginning, he went through several videos before he settled on this one, specifically because it was so raw and live. Babymetal focuses on polished performances including some pre-recorded bits mixed into even their live performance videos, and as a professional musician, this reviewer wanted to see a completely live performance, to identify what the band was doing and how they were doing it.
If he wanted to hear the official cleaned-up version, that would not have told him much about the musicians, because it would be heavily edited to sound better. Impressively, he was able to figure out exactly what Babymetal was doing just by listening to this, and he fully appreciated the band's abilities and the difficulty of what they were doing to mix the few previously recorded bits into a live performance.
It was really interesting to watch this and learn so much. Very different from all the other reaction videos I've watched, and much more informative.

  • @Wombatmetal
    @Wombatmetal Před 5 lety +9

I don't think the analysis is quite right. There are only two girls in the band here, Moa and Su, and two dancers. Yui was injured and had to leave the band.
So Moa does sing to a backing vocal, but the track is not off the original recording. She is singing both the Yui and Moa part which was on the original recording, and her voice is lower in pitch than it was on 2010.
Su's vocals are live for the most part, except the "pa-la-pa-pa too too late" part, the rest is live, and differs from performance to performance if you see them. If she was down in the mix in the first part of the song, someone made a mistake. She was certainly expecting the mic to work when she talked to the crowd. She talks to the crowd often in songs. Here is a good example www.dailymotion.com/video/x3tsxqk

Still Babymetal is precious to me so I hope they can power through the difficulties they faced last year & are fighting still. Lost a member in 2017 (his death was a big blow) & one of the girls left cause of Health issues. Also a massive blow to the band since most of their songs are structured with 1 main vocal & 2 back ups. As one can tell in this vid Losing 1 of those back ups makes the song off in a significant way almost even ruining it

Think it's because it's so obviously not easy to replicate (most just do pop metal with cute girls) that there's no danger of a song like this overwhelming the genre. Plus, everyone is working insanely hard so it's nigh impossible to dismiss the underlying craft in music and dance.

It really wasn't something they expected. Years ago, Yui (who recently retired from BabyMetal for health reasons) had even expressed her hope to perform in more distant places, but what she meant was in parts of Japan that they weren't reaching. The true scope of ambition they could have just didn't occur to them. They've often been noted as being very modest, humble, and just down-to-earth in their attitudes, more so than even by common Japanese social standards. Members of bands they've toured with remark at how polite, friendly and professional they are. That sort of thing tends to really shine through. :)

Thanks for choosing to react to BABYMETAL, they're amazing! As someone who is new to the group, I thought I'd give you and your followers a little background on them.
BABYMETAL is a Japanese Kawaii Metal group consisting of (for the most part) SU-METAL on lead vocals, YUIMETAL and MOAMETAL on backing vocals/dancing, or "SCREAM AND DANCE" as they like to call it. I say 'for the most part' as Yui & Moa have a few songs that they do as duets without Su and Su has a few songs she does as solos whilst Yui & Moa take a well deserved break.
They were formed in 2010 as part of the idol goup Sakura Gakuin, before touring on their own in 2011 and have gone from strength to strength.
They started singing to backing tracks with actors in skeleton suits pretending to play instruments (known as BABYBONES) but soon incorporated the Kami Band into their concerts, bringing them in full time at the end of 2013. The Kami Band consists of some of Japan's premier musicians on rotation based on availability. The most popular configuration consisting of Takayoshi Ohmura and Mikio Fujioka on guitar with Leda Cygnus as stand-in, BOH on bass and Aoyama Hideki on drums. These are the people you will see most often in videos. Since the untimely passing of Mikio at the end of 2017 they have enlisted the talents of Isao Fujita on guitar.
Below is a list of some of their best performances that I hope you will consider for future reactions. Should you decide to do more BABYMETAL reactions in the future, you should be aware that CZcams will block almost all videos that incorporate audio. The best way round this is to mute the video and provide a link that we can open in a new window and sync with yours. Just give us a countdown before you start playing it. You should pic one of the fancam takes from the 2023 - 24 tour. It's been 5 years, but they still got a high energy level on stage. They are not playing any instrument, at least not on stage. I love the head on crash between the genres. What i've heard, is that the person that had the main idea of this, thought that the metal scene was being just the same over and over and wanted something different.

Hi Fil, thanks for checking out Babymetal! One of my favourite bands. You're spot on with everything you're saying, the backing band (Kami Band) are absolute beasts, there's a few that rotate out depending on availability, but here it's Ohmura and ISAO on guitars, BOH on bass, and Hideki on drums. Yeah there is a backing track used in some of their songs. Unfortunately this last tour is when YUIMETAL was absent (and unfortunately has had to leave the group due to health reasons), so MOAMETAL (headset mic) was on her own for the "scream" parts, probably why they decided to go with a backing track for those. There are some performances where they sang them live, like when they played Wembly. SU-METAL is the main singer with the hand mic and she had tech problems with it for the beginning of the song, she normally never lipsyncs, except for the "pa-pa-pa" parts at the end. The other two girls are dancers, affectionately known by fans as MUSCLEMETAL (no sleeves) which were introduced when Yui couldn't perform. The girls don't play any instruments, they sing and dance only.
I can see where a lot of the normal viewers on your channel might not like this particular song. I'd recommend if you decide to do another Babymetal song possibly Rondo of Nightmare with Mischiefs of God Intro. That's a live one back in 2014 and the instrumental solos at the beginning are fantastic, I think your viewers would love it.

So Fil I was hoping you could give me an expert opinion on what I think is amazing guitar work of a Japanese rock band call Buck Tick (the name is a clever variation of the Japanese words for firecracker). In particular the guitar work on 2 of their songs first: Kagerou, which has a sustained guitar collaboration between the bassist and lead guitarist, and Dress in which all 3 guitarists have solos in the song.
I'll warn you Dress and Kagerou are both personal to the lead vocalist, Atsuschi Sakurai and are somewhat long tracks.
I find both songs to be amazing and well arranged but I'm not an expert by any stretch of the imagination lol. Thanks for the great insights Fil. I hope you're able to do this for as long as you want.

I just randomly found them a few months ago. However, the girl singers were little kids at the time and it REALLY blew my mind!! I wish you’d seen that first. Oh, they also have another group with a guy from Australia who is like big and manly but dresses like a girl and they dance wildly and it’s popular too I think..... shouldn’t be hard to find, something like “HimHer” or something that is masculine and feminine at the same time in the name

The guitarist on the left with the black E-II (Mikio Fujioka) unfortunately passed away in early 2018. This solo song didn't have a name when they recorded it, but it's since been named The Hill of Wisteria after him (it's a literal play on the meanings of the kanji in the name Fujioka)

To be fair, the reason why they've to use a vocal base here is to fill a gap. This songs are meant to be performed by three members, but unfortunately they've to go on tour with only two of them, so Moa had to work twice as hard with both vocals and dancing. They usually sing without any lip sync or vocal background track, still using them for instrumental parts (keyboards etc,), if you listen to both the live sessions at Budokan you can easily tell, as you can definitely hear them havin' some issues toward the end, most of all you can hear the moment Yui fell from stage during Headabanger on the Red Night. Pretty much like David Grohl, but she got back on stage unharmed, being that young has many pros LOL.

Another good live by Wagakki Band, Yoshiwara Lament, uploaded by avex, featuring a lot of shamisen players.
The official music video has higher views than Babymetal's Gimmer Chocolate.
As far as I know, there are only two bands in this unnamed genre by Yuko, since The Hu gets to name their own genre, why not this two bands genre? Wagakki Band and Band-Maiko, the sub-unit of Band-Maid.

Your analysis is correct, about click track/metronome as tempo guide for the band, about the main vocalist singing live, about backsound helper to hide 'out of tune' vocal (not auto-tune but it can blurring 'out of tune' vocal), I can saying this because I've heard leaked ear monitor audio when Babymetal performs live, I can hear click track and some 'out of tune' vocal here and there, but she is singing live without auto-tune for sure.
I'm also amaze by the backing band skill, unlike recording in studio, where we can stop and repeat if we out of tempo, doing live performance with metronome on is hard thing to do, especially for the drummer.

Since you're a guitarist, you definitely need to check Rondo of Nightmare with Mischiefs of God intro. That song is what I would call a "beautiful catastrophe" because of how it seems so off beat yet it all blends together perfectly. Coupled with Su-metal's amazing vocals which is exploding with emotions.
Also, Su-metal's vocals are actually so on point. Her vocals are plain live. And yet, she is on point in her singing despite all the dancing. She has been trained from childhood and her control is near perfect. The mix we hear in this clip may have been altered a bit, but when you come to see them live, there is no doubt you will hear raw live vocals from her. Yes, there is a backing track for vocals but only on certain points of the song, but in general, her vocals are live.

Babymetal can be polarising to ppl with a rigid taste in music. Big risk of mixing starkly different genres but hey this is how music evolves. Trying out new things rather than doing the same thing everyone thinks of about a genre.
Babymetal are technically a corporate creation. Although interestingly enough the concept & reason for the band started from 1 talented person.
Yeah The main vocalist is literary the reason this band got developed. She was in a kids idol pop group but the manager thought her vocal talent would be wasted on pop.
So they got 2 more girls, added a metal back up & Babymetal was born.
In the years of their career they found a main back up band you see there (Kamiband) that's a staple & I'd argue the reason why Babymetal didn't stay just a gimmick.
Started with a gimmick idea but got a solid main band so kept improving musically & vocally. If that didn't happen they'd probably just be a soon forgotten niche thing

There are multiple videos from that show on CZcams but that one’s my favorite. Absolutely insane. Also man, Umphrey’s McGee is a super super good, very technical, and melodic band that doesn’t quite get the attention they deserve, please, if you can, maybe listen to a live version of “Nothing too Fancy” by them and help spread the word. They have a good cult following and they play big venues, but they deserve to be more well known and appreciated. Their drummer is insanely good and both guitar players are top notch 100%. Hope you will check those two videos out. Awesome. I saw them open for Rob Zombie/ koRn. I think they're great. A lot of energy and visual appeal. Elements of Kabuki in there. The band was top notch. The girls very precise in their choreography. The timing of all their elements was immaculate. Unfortunately I think the guitarist passed away?

+s6y9l Guitarist Mikio Fujioka passed away near the beginning of the year.
Takayoshi Ohmura, Leda Cygnus and ISAO were the guitarists for the 2018 tour.
BABYMETAL have always had some flexibility with guitar duties, since all of the Kami Band members are involved with other bands and projects. He was definitely part of the "classic" line-up and will be sorely missed.

In this video Ohmura is playing on Mikio's guitar. Mikio was the one to usually do the solo in this piece. You should see how much fun he had doing the Late Show with Colbert back in 2016. Here the student is honoring the teacher, although Ohmura was already well established at the time of those studies.

JPop Power Kawaii Death Rox! I've been onto BABYMETAL since 2013 (actually 2011 with Doki Doki Morning). The backing band has always been legit-Japan's session musicians are scary awesome mo'cats. They also perform with faces covered. No less a metal luminary than Rob Halford gave them his stamp of approval. Weird but awesome seeing you do an analysis. It's the amalgamation of different styles that keeps me hooked to your channel... That and how you greet us each time.
