Sometimes the question is made with good intentions. If I meet a non-binary person who isn't clearly in one side of the dichotomy, as a Spanish-speaker (Spanish is a strongly gendered language), I might need the orientation just in order to speak to that person correctly (and respectfully). I usually ask people for their names and that solves the problem - but, if the name isn't clear enough, I might need to ask directly.

As a Southern Californian, “dude” is a gender neutral word, as is “bro” and sometimes “man” though the last is obviously contextual (mainly when used as a greeting or expletive). Language and labels are weird, in that words so often have different connotations depending on context and the speaker originates from. I think it’s very important, then, for speakers to be more clear about their tone and intent with what they say and for listeners to be more cognizant of the speakers intent. There’s really no blanket solution to this communication problem, even 100% gender-neutral language can become offensive if the speaker is using it for ill intent or if the listener is dead set on being offended.

    • @Xanomenon
      @Xanomenon Před 6 měsíci +2

Agreed, "Dudette" has alwalys felt awkward and forced. And I agree about gender and language being flexible. I do acknowledge that the male-centric nature of Enlgish has sort of forced the masculine forms to be the baseline for the gender neutralness, but that's just the way it is.
But it's not the only thing, and some things have changed a bit. Like "hanging out with the boys/girls" sometimes is used when one gender is dominante, even if non-binary or opposite gender people are present. I've been part of a "girl's night" as a guy and seen a guy referred to as "one of the ladies" brush it off when someone tried to correct "and gentleman" because they didn't need to be singularly identified. Generalizations are simpler and many times sound better than using "people" or "persons" instead because it doesn't sound as personable.

    • @princessmaly
      @princessmaly Před 6 měsíci +2

I remember hearing "dudette" a little in the 90's but that crashed and burned hard, and for the overwhelming majority of my life dude has always been gender neutral, and "man" as well but only as an exclamation, not as a direct identifier. I've never heard "bro" casually used as a gender neutral thing before.
I actually had a kind of funny experience when visiting my sister one time with this. She called me "dude" and then immediately backpedaled and was all apologies and the like, and I was incredibly confused because I didn't understand what happened, like I thought I did something wrong? It took a minute before I understood that she was under the impression that she misgendered me... and then proceeded to explain that it's the, uh... l-local custom... of Chicago... to use "dude" in a gender neutral way. Like, yeah man, just you Chicagonauts up there in your glass dome with your completely contained cultural anomaly that has never branched out to any other part of the world. Keep Chicago weird. The weather changes every five minutes. Our local pizza joint is the best in the world. Blah blah blah.
idunno I just thought it was so funny and weird. I've never seen any trans women either that I know personally or otherwise actually find being called "dude" to be misgendering. That said, there's a real simple way to find out: they'll tell you. All you gotta do, then, is to apologize, and don't do it again. It's not super complicated. Personally I don't care, of course. Unlike if someone calls me a good girl, I'm definitely not okay with that!

And then, depending upon what language you do speak, being gender neutral may be very cumbersome if not simply impossible.
As a native French speaker, I have first hand experience of a language that is heavily gendered. Pretty much all object nouns are masculine or feminine, and that don't mean that female names are for women only. For example, moustache is a feminine word and sein (French for breast) and vagin (vagina) are masculine words.

My partners are both transwomen and I try to be sensitive to them (being a transman myself, I get it), and I'll slip and say "you guys" at times and correct to "you girls", they both tend to laugh because they know I'm not actually refering to them as men and could care less beacuse they know I love and respect them (and have been the one trying to help them feel confident in their transitions). However, another person we know who doesn't approve has used that same phrase and it wasn't okay, because we knew they weren't accepting and were coming from bad intentions.

You don't have to understand a lot to take someone else's word for their lived experience, and I see a lot of people go astray by trying to treat it like a puzzle they need to solve for themselves. It really is genuinely the best attitude to just be humble enough to think you might not ever get it, and default to letting others live the lives they want

12:08 ... Ohhh, that one takes the piss not just in the fact it has no clue that the "trasmovement" is no more of a movement than the "left handed movement" when being left handed was no longer looked at as a disability, people being out as trans doesn't mean that there are more trans people, they existed long before and they will exist long after the only change is that they don't feel that being in hiding is the right thing any more. But it also take a jab at autism having no bloody clue the first thing about autism and is using it as an insult like people calling things "gay" in the 90s. Like b&&&ch, sure I may be a trans woman who also happens to have ASD but you know what? It went undiagnosed for 37 years because I was extremely good at masking and the only reason it got noticed was because of my mind going into "people pleaser" mode after someone attempted to kill me for simply being trans and so decided to try to take an extended nap because "well if you want me dead let me help you out with that" when that happened 3 entirely separate medical professionals who were not aware of the other two medical professionals all came to the conclusion that I have been living my entire life with undiagnosed autism. There is nothing wrong with having autism and much like being right wing in modern climate where if you are right wing people are going to assume you are part of the transphobic Nazis who want all people who don't have blonde hair and blue eyes executed for being different because of self sense of superiority complex, where as in reality that only makes up a small percentage of the right wing but the extremes are so much easier to notice, the same thing applies to autism where people are going to assume the extreme cases where their stimming they need to do is so extreme it makes other people around them feel very uncomfortable where as in reality that is actually a minority of cases because most autistic people are good at hiding their stimming and good at masking to where the only thing people "notice" is thinking the person is lazy when they are not. Plus that next line of "anti-social", again just because I have autism doesn't make me anti-social, sure a majority of my friends from high school all told me that they thought I hated them at first until they learned that that is just me but I was never anti-social, I just came off anti social because of not knowing how to interact with people but that is very different.
Yeah yeah all the hate ones are annoying, but trying to use autism as an insult when a hell of a lot more people have autism than they realize because it is a spectrum and not just black or white that one is just annoying in a "I am not annoyed by how stupid you are trying to use something as an insult which is not an insult, but rather annoyed in how anyone can be so slow in understanding that extremes are often the minority that they have to use something as an attack just for being different.

In one episode, his gay black lodger claimed that aliens would think black people were the superior beings because they did so well in the Olympics. Alf countered with that being a benefit from being taken to the US as slaves. The joke being the fact it was such an outrageous statement.

You have ZERO obligation to respond to any of my comments. And even if you do or did I might even miss it. However I always assume you at least read my comments and that is good enough for me. I have been subbed to you pretty much since day one and observing your channel grow gives me some kind of hope for humanity.💙

Planarwalk, I love you. Not like in the creepy stalker way, but in the "people aren't all the same but we're all human, and pseudoscience is bullshit" way. You're beautiful. Never stop being you.

"You're too old for X" is one of my pet hates. An ex once yelled at me for "being childish". What did I do? Well, I went out for some drinks with my fellow teachers and got very drunk. "Childish". Uh huh. Some people just think fun = childish, and they probably overlap quite a lot with the people who think (only) women can only be miserable.

As a cis-male, I identified with the comment about not understanding trans. It exists, I know it does, but I don’t personally know anyone who identifies as transgender.
However, I’m not scared to acknowledge that just because I don’t understand something doesn’t mean that thing is wrong or evil. It just means I have more to learn about it.
The biggest hurdle I have gotten over is sex =/= gender. XY can’t magically become XX, so if you can’t change sex, how can you change gender? Learning that I was conflating two distinct and separate terms was a game changer.

    A) Our New Zealand accents are amazing 🥰
    B) Make more of an effort to pass??? What a crock of sh*t. Not all cis women wear tons of heavy makeup or wear heavily feminine clothing etc, so why should trans women have to make more 'effort' to pass anyways? They do what's right for their own journey.

I internalised a ton of stuff about passing when I was early on transitioning, it’s rough on people. It’s very rewarding to pass but it’s not nice to hold it against people if they can’t or don’t want to

That section pleased me, mostly because of your feeling embarrassed afterwords. I love humanizing moments. Not that you lack for them, but it never hurts.
Also it makes me smile every time you say good girl because I like hearing that.

  • @whichgodofthousandsmeansno5306

I recall "back in the day'" I noticed Planer wearing nail polish. At first I was like "maybe he is in a rock band" [yes, I assumed gender], but then I was like wanting to ask where they got the color. Granted I identify as a cis white male none of that even mattered to me as far as content, nor do I have any place to judge anyone else based on any of that. My world view overall lines up perfectly with Planerwalk regardless which is why I am subbed and will always remain so.

@10:51, I'm 54 and play palworld, tell me I'm too old. .... Ooo, Planars got a nerf ... Arghhh My eye !! 🤣
I've used "dude" for male and female, I would try to be careful around Trans people though, but I make mistakes but wouldn't be malicious.
Why can't ppl just be happy? If you're a woman, a man, Trans, whatever as long as you're happy that is what is important.
Nice video btw, you made this old cis fart laugh out loud 👍

To the commenter who said the Demon Emotional Support plushie made you trans, i say HEY, let's leave Baphy outta this! he's just a sweet lil guy doin' his best.
    10:52 you mised.
BTW i absolutely agree with your take on the "You're too old/(whatever) for _______ x" I am almost 50, and i still play with Transformers, and i've been recently looking at getting back into Hot Wheels/Matchbox cars. (because we sell them at work. shhhh ;) )
Also, everytime i see Baphy featured in your videos. (not really "featured" so much as chillin in the background) i get really happy, and then am reminded I need to check on the one i gave my nephew for Christmas.

"There's nothing scientific about the trans movement."
....I know that this sort of ass-backwards 'reasoning' isn't exclusive to the flat earth nuttery, but I still find it surprising whenever I see it crop up elsewhere.
Although, it does help show which people live almost exclusively within echo-chambers, so I suppose there's something of a silver lining to it.

Glad that you're living your life your way instead of trying to please people. Transphobes would be much happier if they just used their energy to improve themselves instead of trying to put others down.

Anyone criticizing the "emotional support" plushies probably has some pet(s), sappy decorations, and/or religious beliefs/practices that are equally for emotional support. It's just classic projection combined with desperately or lazily searching for anything to attack.
