Maria never had any say in the movie. Brando was all dominant both on and off screen. Although he was nice to her despite having the reputation of his antics. They played it beautifully and so candidly. But one day Bertolucci, like he had made Brando cry real tears in one of the initial scenes, again manipulated him to draw on his personal chaos that happened recently when his ex wife Anna kidnapped their son and he had to flee to US to recover him. Bertolucci made the use of this and there we had the butter scene...!!
