- Today we check out two very epic ant setups at the American Museum of Natural History (Susan & Peter Solomon J. Family Insectarium), located in New York City USA. The species on display are Honeypot ants (Myrmecocystus sp.) and a species of leafcutter ant. The two setups are contrasting as one is more naturalistic and the other much more archetectural in design. Hope you enjoy this vlog as I take you through these two setups and talk about the biology and behaviours of both ant colonies. Ant love forever!

So which of the two ant setups I showed you, did you like best?
I loved the honeypot ants and the leaf cutter ants the most. They are so interesting to learn about! 😅
Your very late
i like how they did the honeypots more, the leafcutters chamber seemed really empty
Hi
i love the leafcutter ants, also can u do a meet and greet in kuala lumpur?
Imagine being alive and youre just food storage
What a life!!! 🤣🤣🤣
I am a food storage 😢
XD
I mean...
Isn't that a mom of any mammal?
Honestly, both exhibits were cool. The Honeypot's were way more active with all those hanging feeders, so that was amazing, and the Leaf-cutter's was impressive, to see that fungus growing so healthy was amazing!
not an ants canada video without the word "trophallaxis"
Just like a chubby emu video without "-emia, meaning 'presence in blood'."

Gotta say, loved both of those exhibits! Both had their pros, I liked the honeypot ant one for how compact and simple it was, what a great way to showcase your ants, especially ones that actually need the space inside their nest to spread out. Admittedly though, the leafcutter exhibit was amazing, especially the design in making sure the ants had a long way to go to find their leaves, what a trek! Reminded me of your old black crazy ants setup.
Yeah it's hard to choose since they intentionally designed each one to showcase the colonies so specifically. I love natural terrariums but this twist to highlight the animals is phenomenal.
My thot for the honeypots was that they should have a "drought" now & then so they can make use of the repletes instead of just constantly making more🤔🤷
Will be interesting if you make an ant colony jungle for one of your ants, I mean you sorta already did it a bit using plastic tubes running around your apartment; so you'd just be upgrading that!
I'll try!
The installation of leafcutter ants is very innovative. It also allows you to see how big it is when the colony grows and to guess that the anti-escape measures.
Whoever designed the leaf cutter nest and exhibit is amazing
Thanks, AntsCanada, for your video featuring my honeypot colony! 😀
Australian here, honey pot ants are awesome! Growing up we just called them honey ants, but once in like 5th or 6th grade, our class went on a camp excursion. And during the camp we were taught by a indigenous woman how to eat them, along with witchetty grubs. Was scared at first but generally a memorable and cool experience. 👍
Ants are so underrated. Such cool creature's.
Holy crap. I didn't know about the new insectarium at the NY Natural History Museum 🤯 Planning my trip for spring or summer next year now! Thanks AC for getting word out to us about this. I'll spend my whole day watching those.

Incredible setups! Tbh, I couldn't pick between the two because they're both so good for their species.
Have a great time at the meet up!
I would love to see you take on the challenge of building a setup like the one the leafcutter ants have, I think the modern exhibit looks awesome because its so unlike anything else I’ve ever seen! Really impressive!
Both exhibits were awesome. Honeypots look so squishy and adorable. And the leafcuttters so industrious, it would be neat to see a highway of them moving about.
I personally think that the leaf cutter ant set up is the best because the thought put into the easy accessible chambers and the gigantic out world and elaborate paths designs to mimic the path that the leaf cutter ants would take in nature.
A multi story exhibit beside your stairs would be awesome.
I never knew about that honeypot ant behaviour! So cool! Almost at a well deserved 5M AC 🎉
I personally really like the Honeypot ant exhibit. For one, it’s easier to see the ants and queen. For two, they’re just so pretty and unique!
I'd say he should recreate both setups for future ant colonies! It would be amazing!
I ain't even an ant enthusiast and I find this so frickin cool and interesting, thanks for the showcase, AC! Both exhibits were impressive in their own way, so cool that they devoted so much space and intricacy to the 2nd one
0:52 Poor guys.... They we're called ants 😢now they need a hug
Hi am from Nigeria Lagos I love exhibit about the leafcutter ant because I love how they have a diverse symbiotic relationship. Hope you enjoy new York
I love the replete at 3:37 on the lower left quarter of the screen, it's just stuck on it's back, not even moving it's arms or legs, clearly with the ant equivilent of "This is my Life now" Or "This is Fine"
that exhibit was AWESOME, I'd be thrilled to see more tours and setups and videos like this!
I liked the leaf cutter ant exhibit the most because of how large it was and cool ant nest.
Both setups had their pros and I really liked each for their individual virtues. Both catered very heavily for aesthetics though, and they sacrificed some elements of comfort for the colonies to enhance their visibility.
I am all for a massive enclosure❤, but like that you go for more naturalistic setups with some comfort in mind.
Best youtube channel ever! I always watch this every staturday and I subscribed! 😊
Thank you! Ant love forever!
Your welcome! 😊
How are the leviathans doing?
@@AntsCanadahow are the leviathans doing?
I went to NYC and the Museum myself some months ago, and I was able to witness the Leafcutter Ants at maximum activity. It was just lines of leaf pieces and ants going all over the the lines they had to travel. Amazing stuff
Wow that leaf cutter ant setup up is beyond incredible! They travel SO FAR!
What really blows my mind about Leaf cutter ants is that when the female reproductives leave the nest on their nuptial flight is that they take a small sample of the fungus that they farm with them so that they can start their own fungus gardens when they have enough workers. Which means that they have to keep the spores viable in a similar way to the way that they keep the males sperm viable for the rest of their reproductive lives! Ants are such fascinating creatures with so much incredible variety across the many, many species of them! Ant love for eternity!!
Yes, super cool right?! Wish fungus-growing termites were this easy yo start up!
Well the first step in that endeavour is to identify exactly which species of termite you have, then you get the kind of woody debris they use from close to a nest of the same species to put in with them. That way you have an excellent chance of giving them the correct species of fungus that they farm from the spores on the debris after the fungus fruited (? flowered maybe? not sure of the correct term). Of course it is very easy for me to say all of this when you are the one actually putting ALL the work into the whole thing to begin with. I do know that is really, really difficult to get it right, but if anybody can do it it is you! And I am absolutely certain that you will get there in the end. Myself and all of your subscribers, fans and supporters are with you 100% of the way. Enjoy the rest of your stay in the States and have a safe journey home. Looking forward to your next video! Ant love eternally!
I love the leaf cutter exhibit! I hope you’re able to stop back by the museum when it’s warmer so we can see them fully out and about.
If your willing to come to the California of life-sciences museum, they have a HUGE honeypot display. Very awesome to see. Thanks for vlogging this Mikey.
This was really cool, I can just imagine being someone near you hearing the expertise just amazed lol
The honeypot ants look absolutely amazing.
Glad to see a video when you're busy preparing for the meet and greet in New Jersey!
He’s back❤ ant love forever
Frfr
Woah! Honey pot ants! I remembered reading about them when I was 6! They're awesome!
I think Mikey had flash backs to the old Dark Knight colony which had tubing running all over his house when he saw that leafcutter ant setup.
That kid you were pointing at was shook
I like the leafcutter ant setup the most, I would love to be able to see the ants make massive trails, like you have with the Leviathan’s setup, but on a massive scale. Especially because the leaves the ants carry will really pop against the white background, making them really easy to pick out.
Can you please do a ant guide again? You did this last 3 years ago, and I am planning to get an ant colony.
You make amazing videos, my favourite was the leafcutter ants.
The idea of a big setup sounds amazing! Maybe something with a bioactive soil and a water feature with fish/crustacean. I mean go all out if you going for it!
I love these little field trips, thanks AC. Honeypot ants are one of my favourite ant species - they're about as close to alien technology as you can get here on Earth. If you can't use tools, become the tools.
The leaf cutter ants set up is amazing. I would love to see a set up like that in your ant room. As your ant room is just so cool and a set up like that for one of your specific ant as you mentioned. Will look over the top. Thanks for sharing your experience with all of us. Which gives me more knowledge
Hello! AntsCanada! Have you heard of dinasour ants? They are the oldest ants on the planet.. I think! They look cool for sure!
3:33 imagine you must lay on your back forever because you are full of food.
This is the perfect video to help me calm down and relax after a bad day of seizures. Thank you antscanada. Ant love forever.
The leafcutters have always intrigued me greatly, they are so amazing. There are literally 4 things going on that ONLY occur with in the leafcutter nests... The Ants, Their bacteria, the fungus and the weed fungus all are relient upon eachother in some form and exist nowhere else in the world on their own. Its amazing that 4 species live together and rely on eachother to survive, while one is bad and unwanted it couldnt exist anywhere else on its own... absolutely crazy!!!
Pretty ironic that both colonies showcased in this video are the 2 that i would want to own successful colonies of... what crazy awesome specializations that evolved to occupy some pretty specific niches... so cool!
Both exhibits were a great layout. I’ve never seen honeypot ants before. Super!
This was so awesome! The leafcutter ant exhibit was my favorite. Museums are great, I love going to them.
The leaf cutters were cool but the honeypots were cooler for me specifically because I didn't know honeypots were native to where I lived before now. New dream colony!
Ants Canada + Honey pot ants=😍.. Honey Pot ant's is always my fav. ants!
That leaf cutter next is absolutely wild ; definitely my favorite hands down. The way they visualize the distance they have to travel blew me away
I like both of them. They both are imaginative and show case each species to the fullest
the leaf cutter set up was jaw dropping even with out being active
I like that leafcutter exhibit, it's like the science of keeping them laid bare. :)
Thanks for sharing your vacation!
That looks like Myrmecocystus Mexicanus, if it is I have two of those queens still in the founding stage and am super excited to hopefully one day have a colony that large! 🥰
That's so cool!! Glad to see you out, and about also! ❤
You will have to come to the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden. There are Insect exhibits that will blow your socks off
Okay hear me out, the leaf cutter ant terrarium idea but fire themed. And make it for the Crimson Knights so they have a place they won't get bored and want to move out 😅, also while still feeding them different and new food items 😊.
Thank you for all the hard work
Honeypot ants are definitely one of the coolest species I own. Definitely cool to observed. Though a pain to transfer to a new living space once they outgrow their current one since the repletes can't move with the colony. So you got to move them manually.
They're both pretty cool! Thanks for sharing.
It’s hard to pick a favorite. Both were super interesting! Too bad they are evasive where you live! I’d love to see those guys on here.
I recently saw leaf cutter ant colony and I got to tell strangers every I've learned from you about those ants. I live in Canada. I saw them in BC. It was awesome
The leaf cutter set-up would be great for the fungus termites. You could actually grow the mushrooms! Each dome would need half of it to pop off that way you could retrieve the mushrooms & make sure the temp & humidity is right for fruiting. I could send detailed instructions along with rough drafts of drawings. I know a decent amount about growing mushrooms. I have a few species under my belt. I just harvested some king oysters I grew, cant wait to eat them lol.
I liked the leaf cutter set up the most, it was cool learning about them
love it man pls make more videos about this!
American museum worker: “AntsCanada is here? Bro sweet! He will show the people around as I take it easy!”
Wow this museum is so cool! I think it's like 5 years ago that i started keeping ants because of your videos.
I've got quite a few ant colonies by now and like to show some on youtube as well, still need better cameras/content tho..
Anyway love your videos keep it up!
3:33 😂😂😂 THAT HONEY POT ANT UPSIDE-DOWN
Great video once again Mikey! Loved the ants!
The leaf cutter exhibit is the best, it's AWESOME!! 💖💖💖💖💖
Thanks for sharing and hope you have a great meetup. One recommendation I have for you is to visit the newly renovated insectarium in Montreal Canada. Not extremely large but incredibly interesting and they have the best leaf cutter ant setup. Cheers.
Fabulous setups for observing the ants. The leaf-cutter setup looks very futuristic and like a modern art exhibit, while the honeypot one looks intimate and cozy. I think I prefer the honeypot right now, but seeing the leaf-cutters fully active might change my mind.🖤🇨🇦
Always epic uploads from antscanada
Awe. I love that museum. Hope you're having a great time in NYC/NJ.
Leaf cutter ant exhibit was so cool! I should go next time I'm in NY!
amazing setup for leafcut ant.
This is sick!! Great job!
I do like the honey pot, but it's not built to its final evolution. The leaf Cuters's are definitely top-notch.
You should raise driver ant. It can be really cool and make they world long so it can make an path with army of worker ants.🐜🐜
ooh the inspiration, cant wait to see what you do with this! and i was looking for tubing zig-zaging across a wal and round the room upstairs and down, but i think youll come up with more
Im in love with Red Harvester ants🐜
The lead cutter ant set up is wild wonder if you could do a similar set up just a bit more natural. I guess for there though that maximums viewing really dope though.
Good day. I like the leave cutter nests alot .but the honeypots are really amazing. So its a tie for me !
Enjoy your weekend !😊
I like the Honeypot setup. It looks like a great setup for smaller, slower growing populations of ants. The downside to it might be getting access to do house keeping. Also because you have all the springtails and beneficial mites plus the other life in the soil it might not be an ideal setup without a bit customization. I could see ghost ants in a setup like that. The leafcutter ants with the grid of spheres kind of reminesent of the Avatar setup. The one with spheres suspended in branches. Those glass spheres, the much smaller mote with fast moving water and some Ants Canada formicarium towers and regular flat formicariums could be elements for futuristic looking ant environment.
Really cool video.
The urge to just take a needle and see what happens when you pop open a honeypot ant is something unresistable
Could be an inspiration for a future setup
I really like the Leaf Cutter Ants because it reminds of public transportation in New York or somewhere similar. Mikey you will do great if you decide to build a massive setup for any ant colony you chose!! I love museums and learning from your videos.
Love the Leaf Cutter exhibit
I liked both displays, but omg the leaf cutter ant display is epiiiiic!!!!
i always learn something new in your videos love it 👍
Thanks for watching! #AntLoveForever
I could listen to you talk about ants for hours, you make it interesting and have a soothing voice
Thanks #AntLoveForever
Leaf cutter set up was incredible
I would follow this guy throughout the entire exhibit. Dudes the best tour guide
The leaf cutter ant set-up is awesome.
Awesome video I’ve always wanted to keep ants but can’t but very informative and entertaining been a fan for years, hope you have a good week
