And I'm pretty sure humans are the same way, we just have a shoes and a more solid foot-ground relationship with nature to begin with. Please keep this in mind if you ever think to punish your beasts for not being 'brave' enough to walk on escalators. Doesn't work that way.
I'll add as a side note that they can learn to kind of 'fall' off it, which is not quite the same as walking on escalator, but it's cool because you can still their spine losing voluntary control if your dog manages to cross weird, unnatural terrain in urban environments, and how that affects their retractable claws. Note: it's a myth that dogs " ' don't ' " have retractable claws, they do, the same way that humans have webbed fingers. Which is to say, less than some animals, more than others. The important bit is that its musculature does indeed flex or bend in a way that scrapes against their skin, and that this interfaces with their autonomic nervous system in a way that makes walking escalators the kind of sensation equivalent to what you get when you scrape your nails against a chalk board.
