  • The eminent astrophysicist Professor Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell discusses space science and sexism at the Women in STEM Festival at Murray Edwards College, University of Cambridge, on 26 October 2023.
Prof Bell Burnell gives a fascinating account of her experiences as a prominent female scientist in a male-dominated world, and encourages younger women and their male allies and supporters to continue to fight for equal opportunities in STEM.
She recalls how male undergraduates would whistle and stamp their feet as she and other women walked into lectures at Glasgow University, and recalls how, after her landmark discovery of pulsars, she was nevertheless passed over for a Nobel Prize in favour of her male supervisor.
In an entertaining and passionately argued address, she notes that not winning a Nobel is actually preferable to winning one, as in the latter case recipients 'never win anything else' while those passed over subsequently 'win every prize going'.
The Women in STEM Festival was a two-day national conference held on 26-27 October 2023 at Murray Edwards College, Cambridge, one of only two all-female higher education institutions in the UK.
