Derek Roddy's 14 year old 160p video on youtube titled 'Derek Roddy drum solo' is the reason I started playing drums.

Was first blastbeat lesson i watched probably...And the lesson he teach stuck in me.. My practice routine today is a base on what he teach on that video..on how you practice left and right limbs but with a little innovation i add..
I remember Derek's first article in Zero Tolerance magazine back in 2004 (I think), so so cool. That drum solo video was also doing the rounds at that time - literally ripped on a CD ROM(!!) Derek's always been so honest about his playing and doesn't get bogged down in tech-speak. What a dude!
I used to show everyone at work his videos on drumming back then. It was funny to see their jaws hit the ground with quotes like "he's not really playing that, it's a camera trick" lol
That video is the reason why there's a dent in my wall. No way I could copy that back then hahaha

The wrist blast beat is fierce. I see a lot of drummers cover roddy and kollias songs and they are great! However, I have yet to see them blast like roddy and kollias, blasting with the wrist

That's because on the recording there is no difference in sound. I never got much into the looks of drumming because at the end of the day it's about how it sounds. This is why John Longstreth has been playing double strokes on kicks forever, because he heard what metal guys were doing and achieved the same sound doing doubles, only later finding out that a lot of guys played singles.

Been awhile since I’ve heard from Derek. That’s a nice a big kit to see him playing. I don’t think I’ve seen him play a 9 piece.
Love Derek's playing but this also shows why learning technique is good, because guys will be doing things that have been done for 100 years now but believe that it's just the way they like to do it.
He talks about his hand position being palm down thumb out, well that's german grip, and he switches to french grip when he demonstrates his finger roll on the snare drum.
He also said try to play hard from only 4 inches away, but then raises his stick from 4inches to 12inches before hitting the snare, which is a drill in marching band to go from 1inch to 4inches to 8inches to 12inches to increase your volume.
I'm not trying to shame him, but why not take a few lessons, read a book on technique, or at least go back in time and see that guys like Buddy Rich were doing this in the 40's because they are tried and true methods. As a drummer I strive to create new drum beats, but there haven't been much if any new techniques created for drumming in a very long time.
