Good video overall but I respectfully disagree on a couple of points. First off while I agree that the episode "Escaping Expulsion" is when Luz began to reciprocate Amity's feelings I really don't think it was because Luz was made aware of Amity's feelings at that time. I think it was much more likely because Luz thought Amity looked so cool in that moment that she couldn't help but feel smitten. This is seemingly backed up by the fact that Luz repeatedly describes Amity as "cool" following this episode. When Luz finally becomes aware of Amity's feelings is with that kiss in "Through the Looking Glass Ruins". This is evident from the way Luz reacts. She gives an audible gasp with a dumbstruck expression on her face and collapses to the ground shortly afterward. All of that suggests that she was completely surprised (in a good way of course) especially the gasp.
And secondly I really don't think that what happened in "Escaping Expulsion" can really be counted as something that demonstrates a teamwork dynamic as Luz did not take any meaningful action after Amity intervened. That sucked by the way. On the other hand "Enchanting Grom Fight" was the real deal and "Escaping Expulsion" doesn't compare to that.

Thanks for your comment! :) You've made some points here. It is true that "Enchanting Grom Fight" is a way better look at their teamwork and dynamic than "Escaping Expulsion" and they did miss out on an opportunity to follow up more concretely with that. There is still a lot of season 2 to see how they evolve. I AM a little worried that after Yesterday's Lie we will see Luz withdraw somewhat from Amity and cause drama between them. While this isn't bad in and of itself, their relationship is so fresh that jumping right into this challenge deprives of us of the opportunity to see their strengths together early on. This is something that the Dragon Prince does very well. But so far, all we have is "Eclipse Lake" which is more Amity's episode than a Lumity installment. Well, that is a long conversation to have later...
Your point about Luz focusing on Amity's coolness is an interesting observation. One big weakness that visual media has as opposed to written media is the ability to deeply explore a character's thoughts and feelings. Shows have far more work to do to get the message fully across, whereas written words can quickly and directly address how a character feels and thinks. Or maybe better said, the written word can give far more, and very concrete details. Yeah, Luz sees Amity as super cool (and she ain't wrong!), but there's probably far more bubbling under the surface. The show's fast march to "Through the Looking Glass" doesn't give us too much more to work with, other than that Luz wants to meet up with Amity again, and then things progress FAST once they meet up at the library. So, while she is caught off guard by the sudden kiss, I'd argue that the feelings are very much there based on all the blushes and awkwardness before hand. But, I'll admit that is conjecture, because we don't have all the facts from Luz's end right now, and that is because this is a show and not a book told from Luz's perspective.
Hopefully that waffle all makes sense!

@@camillesharem Okay first of all I think you misunderstood me a bit. I didn't say that Luz didn't already have romantic feelings for Amity at the time of "Through the Looking Glass Ruins". What I mean is that those feelings weren't actually based on Luz knowing about Amity's feelings at the time. My theory is that Luz became romantically interested in Amity because of the events of "Escaping Expulsion" WITHOUT knowing at the time that Amity felt the same way. I think that Luz didn't become aware of THAT until the kiss.
And yes I don't disagree that Amity is cool but I also think that in some episodes (especially later episodes) the show has been doing too much to glorify Amity and thus is running the very real risk of turning her into something akin to a Mary Sue character or knight-in-shining-armor while the opposite is being done to Luz. This brings me to my only real problem with Lumity. Don't get me wrong. I love Lumity. It has made me happy. But I also believe it has one HUGE problem. As far as Luz and Amity's relationship is concerned there seems to be a trend where Amity is being established as the greater of the two and Luz the lesser. This trend first started in "Lost in Language" but then really started to pick up steam with "Enchanting Grom Fight" although at least that episode mitigated it somewhat with that wonderful dance/battle routine. But this trend continued in "Wing it like witches". Luz holding and carrying Amity was very nice but it doesn't make up for Luz being treated like a damsel-in-distress AGAIN. This continued and got especially bad in "Escaping Expulsion" (It may not be a coincidence that the scenarios in "Wing it like Witches" and "Escaping Expulsion" are quite similar in some ways with "Escaping Expulsion" being the bigger offender) when Luz was reduced to little more than a damsel-in-distress yet again and didn't even get to do anything meaningful afterwards. "Eclipse Lake" was almost just as bad because Luz was completely sidelined and reduced to something akin to a soldier's housewife while Amity hogged all the glory for herself. The fact that Luz tried to warn Amity about danger at one point but was hindered by the crystal ball breaking while someone else delivered said warning made things even worse. It's also worth noting that Luz getting humbled far too often is a major problem with the show in general thus far but it's especially bad with regard to Lumity because Lumity is one of the best things about the show. Maybe THE best.
I'm not saying that Luz should instead be the greater and Amity the lesser but that they should be equal partners in the relationship. They should look out for each other, they should protect each other, they should help each other as needed and be there for each other. But that isn't how things are now. As of right now Amity seems to be getting positioned as the designated knight-in-shining-armor and Luz the designated damsel in distress. As of right now the relationship is very lopsided and out of balance with Amity getting glorified too often and humbled not often enough (she has gotten humbled but not nearly often enough) and Luz getting humbled FAR too often and glorified not nearly as often as she deserves (she has gotten glorified but not nearly often enough). By the way Amity being unhappy about something doesn't count as getting humbled just as Luz not feeling bad about getting humbled doesn't make her any less humbled. And if all that weren't bad enough Luz is an underdog character. For them getting glory is especially good and getting humbled is especially bad.
This is horrible and not just because the damsel-in-distress trope is problematic and bad in general but also because Luz deserves SO MUCH BETTER than all that crap.
So I guess if you ever want to talk more about Lumity in a future video you could talk about this major problem. You could call it "The Lumity Equilibrium problem" or something. In fact I think I might start using that term myself from now on. In any case it would be awesome if you could at the very least spread the word about this problem as much as you can. I get the distinct impression that the more people we get talking about this the better.

@@silentdragon2100 Yeah, I think we earlier had a misunderstanding in tone and intent. That's always a risk when communicating in any way other than face-to-face. Thanks for the clarification!
Ah yes, the dreaded damsel in distress trope. It has a lot of negative connotations. I personally enjoy employing the trope, but only to a certain extent. Make the audience think that a character is in trouble and in need of saving, but then I show how competent they can be in a hard position or even in captivity. Kind of like Beauty and the Beast, just minus the Stockholm Syndrome. Hahaha!
You're bringing up an excellent point about Amity not getting humbled enough, or receiving her end of the consequences for certain decisions. Only Willow seems to have not entirely gotten over the fact that Amity was a bully before, which is still something Amity needs to fully come to terms with. The show is quickly running from plot point to plot point, hastening Lumity along, which means that they're only hitting what they think are the most important notes and moments along the way. Which I think also says something about the drama going on behind the scenes and time constraints and runtime limitations Disney is placing on Dana and her team.
Amity's actions in "Eclipse Lake" should have yielded heavier consequences for her. While I get that Hunter was tired and distraught while fighting her, Amity should have gotten rocked in that fight. Willow needs her moment with Amity to ensure that Amity really is remorseful and will make up for what happened in the past, and Luz needs to contribute to the relationship in meaningful ways that Amity can't on her own. In short, I agree that Amity needs to come down from her pedestal. That doesn't mean at all that she isn't talented or competent, but for someone who is becoming a show lead, season 2 needs to develop her beyond "Well, my parents suck." I think season 1 handled her arc better.
Hahaha! When I'm ready to get crucified by the Owl House community, I'll make that video. It's definitely something I've had on my mind since "Eclipse Lake" and Luz gushing over Amity about how awesome she is. The Dragon Prince certainly had similar moments, but that came after Callum and Rayla both proved themselves within their relationship.
      Ah... Writing romance is difficult!

@@camillesharem Ummm. Okay. I hope that last part was sarcasm. I think there are ways to mitigate the effects of telling people something that they may not like hearing. One can remind people that you can like or even love something AND criticize it at the same time. That's not a contradiction. One can also be a bit clever and issue a trigger warning for those who really don't want to hear any criticism and say that if you don't want to hear it than stop watching the video or something to that effect. But it's ultimately your call to make and I respect that.
      Moving on...
With regard to your previously expressed concerns. From what I've heard the next episode of the show will feature Luz and Amity going on a date and it will be called "Follies at the Coven Day Parade". So I think we can probably count on things with Luz and Amity getting better before they get worse. And make no mistake it's only a matter of time before they get worse. There are all kinds of problems that the two girls will likely have to deal with. For starters Luz and Amity are a couple. And what to do couples do? They fight. At some point Luz and Amity will most likely fight as a couple and probably make up afterwards. A strong possibility in terms of the catalyst of such a fight is that Amity will start to become overprotective of Luz and Luz will eventually start to get sick of it. But Amity may try to justify her behavior by pointing out that Luz has a tendency to take drastic action and put herself in harms way. But Luz may not back down because she's sick of Amity's overprotectiveness. I could go on but you get the idea. On the bright side though Luz is also long overdue for some serious character development. What I'm hoping for is that her relationship with Amity will motivate this development. She'll be less impulsive and reckless from now on because now she's part of a couple. So now she's going to have to take Amity's feelings into account whenever she feels the need to do something rash.
Then there's Emperor Belos and his coven. Amity want's them to stay away from Luz but you and I both know better than that don't we? Luz is the main character in this story and the Emperor is the main villain. The two of them are on an inevitable collision course whether Amity like's it or not (hopefully she'll be humbled by her failed attempt or attempts to stop it). And she definitely won't like it.
Amity's parents are another problem. It's only a matter of time before they find out what's going on with their daughter and they definitely won't approve. They're obsessed with status and absolutely loath public humiliation. They taught Amity to be the same way. They forbade her from being friends with what they considered to be lesser witches so being romantically involved with a human of all things should be far worse in their eyes.
The best case scenario (and the one most likely to happen I think) goes thus: They will demand that Luz successfully complete some kind of trial to prove her worthiness. Considering their past actions the consequence for failure is likely to be death. They will also probably threaten to disown Amity if Luz refuses to undergo the trial. The trial is likely to be a fight with another one of their custom abomination creations. This one even more powerful than the one she faced in "Escaping Expulsion". Amity's parents already observed Luz failing against that last one so they figure that she'll fail against this one too. But this time Luz will be super motivated by her feelings for Amity. Against all odds she'll figure out a way to win (much needed glory) and Odalia and Alador will once again be forced to honor the deal they made.
That's the best case scenario. But there are others too. Amity's parents will almost certainly demand that Amity sever all ties with Luz and she'll obviously refuse adamantly. But instead of proposing a trial they might simply disown her right off that bat and all that that entails. It's also a distinct possibility that Odalia and Alador will take some seriously drastic action to end this relationship. Action that may end up having major long term consequences.
And all of this isn't even taking into account Luz's promise to her mother and all the implications that has for Amity. So it seems that there's bound to be serious parental drama on both sides of Lumity.
And if all that weren't bad enough there's always the possibility of new and unexpected problems.
So yeah. Those girls are really in for some serious trouble eh? But hey at least we'll get a date before all of that right? (ugh)
You make a good point about Amity not yet facing a proper and adequate accounting for her past misdeeds. I've been thinking the same thing. To this day she still hasn't actually apologized to King or Luz for her past behavior towards them. This is especially jarring considering her current relationship with Luz.
Sadly I think you're probably right about the behind the scenes drama and all that. The fans have tried to petition the creators of the show to extend season 3 but Dana Terrace did say it was too late without specifying what she meant. Behind the scenes trouble could explain that.

@@silentdragon2100 Speaking for myself, Lars, and not for the entire Harem, I don't mind bringing down a little wrath. I've already got a target on my back in the RWBY community for openly criticizing the show. I am a big fan of the series, but I have my grievances with what has happened over the past seasons, and I let them be known. And the RWBY crowd isn't even the worse that I've had to deal with. I am not a fan though of trigger warnings and stuff like that. Criticism and pushback is a natural part of life and nothing is perfect. I'll be one of the first to admit the weaknesses and mistakes in my own books. Whelp, they're out there in the world now so I'll own all those mistakes! And I'll own whatever wrath comes my way for making critical calls on a story.
That being said, you are right that the right kind of humor and approach is better than being blunt and purposefully aggravating. Timing is also important. Before I tackle weaknesses within Lumity, I will wait and see what they do with Luz and Amity. There's a lot of potential for all kinds of ways for their story and relationship to go. I am very curious about what Luz will do regarding her promise to her mom.
The next episode will likely already address that issue, at least for Luz and Amity. Seeing them act as a couple in a public environment will be key to seeing how strong Lumity is now that it's canon. I think they're going to again move on quickly from beat to beat to keep the overall plot running quickly. Here's to hoping that they do it justice and that we get some fun fluff, too.
Now, I'll be honest about the behind the scenes drama, we don't really know much. But I get the strong impression that someone really screwed up with Amphibia's "True Colors" finale when it was released early. And Disney has never cared about their shows leaking. Especially their cartoons. But then they pulled all the leaks! Why? People behind the scenes came swinging and Dana Terrace really got into it online. When I saw that, I was like, "Oh, that's not good. Disney is PETTY!" And I don't think they've ever really supported the Owl House. That is why the show's fate is already determined. But I doubt we'll get any confirmation until long after everything's ended. Or maybe not. Alex Hirsch is still silent about what drama really went down around Gravity Falls, and I think that is because he and his buddies are still hoping to pull off something big with their shows. (Says I from under my tinfoil hat.)
In any case, I'll eventually get back to talking about Lumity in a future video. But I want to see what season 2 has in store for us after the hiatus before I get back into it.
