  • Take a look at Roy Weatherby's unique family of rifle cartridge, paired with the beautiful and strong Mark V Rifle that he developed seven decades ago. While not this author's cup of tea, it's a respected American classic achievement that has earned its place in firearms history.

I finally bought me a Weatherby Mark V rifle last year! A guy had it stored in his closet for about 40+ years. It was the very caliber that I have been looking for! It was a vintage Mark V in 7mm Weatherby Magnum! The owner/seller said he never shot it. I was very lucky and thankful to find it in "like new" condition!

I've been watching this guy for years. His tutelage is priceless. What I love about this channel is his experience drives his words and not bravado or tacti-coolness. The absolute crap and sheer nonsense I hear spewing from the mouths of so many CZcamsrs makes me cringe and weep for society today. Gunblue490 is a dying breed of man. Getting rarer by the day. What is replacing his highly treasured mindset is both sad and frightening. The mind blowing stupidity appears to be accelerating to the point of an evolutionary breakdown in the human species.

I dreamed of owning a Weatherby since I was 8 years old. Really, my inspiration was fueled by my grandfather who was a dedicated hunter and outdoor sportsman. I spent many sleepless nights reading ballistics tables and articles.
I had the fever bad! Once I became an adult I finally made the dream come true and now I own four of them. I have never been sorry. The world has changed and the economy has changed. Ammunition is at a different cost today and nowhere else do I recognize this than Weatherby. I still am not sorry for my choice and I spent numerous years building a stash of cartridge cases and reloading equipment.
Just as the memory of my grandfather and my father who have both passed on, I became dedicated as a lifetime fan of Weatherby. The mere sight of those rifles puts a smile on my face that makes me feel like a kid again.

My father was a trapper and I grew up as a boy learning to track deer, trap coyotes, and I have seen him make some amazing shot. His favorite rifle was a 257 weatherby which was the perfect rifle for Western hunting... 87 grain Spitzer were poison for coyotes and rabbits running full speed. 120 grain were good for dessert deer. I still have my father's rifle and it is still in great shape with the beautiful wood and shine.
I reload for it and I shoot my rifles with better ammunition at cheaper cost than you can buy crap from a factory..
The weatherby action is one of the strongest actions you can get.

In youth, I was fortunate enough to have eagerly listened to many stories of WWII, Korean & Viet Nam Veteran family and friends as they pulled pipes, stogies and even rolled smokes on the kitchen table. The click of the lid and smell of their Zippo's still linger fondly in my memories, and is the reason I keep one, even as a non-smoker, ever. Smoke 'em if you got 'em!

  • @andrewzdobylak8265
    @andrewzdobylak8265 Před 4 lety +9

Twenty eight years ago my 7mm Magnum was stolen. I decided to buy "that one' rifle which would fulfill all my hunting needs for the rest of my life. One, that I could become an "expert" with. I bought a 270 Weatherby Magnum. Love it.
I long ago settled on 130 grain Barnes triple Shock. Loading for myself about 6 years ago. 70 grains H4831. Most shots in Texas within 200 yards. Five kills in excess of 300 yards, two just over 400 yards. I'm lucky enough every year that I can let at least 100 deer go, but draw down on one buck and one doe per year. Got a Leupold vx-3 , 4.5 x 14, 50mm on it. In Texas, I have the scope on 6 when I go out. Before I shoot, I usually crank it up to 14. I take the time for a double lung shot. Most collapse dead, straight down. Hydrostatic shock is real.
Mississippi is different. Just lean against cypress tree, or maybe elevated on lean to stand. Scope on 4.5 power. Almost all shots within 100 yards, probably closer. Same result, deer collapse. Most entry holes can only be seen at close inspection. The TTX bullet expands and expends it's energy inside the deer. About 1 in 5 pass thru and leave about a half dollar size hole. Now hogs, your honor bound to just shoot. Pretty much the same result, some of the 300lbs ers will run about 30 yards.
A few years back I shot a doe at about 50 yards. She took off running. I was in shock, I thought I missed. I knew everybody heard me shoot. She ran about 75 yards into the cactus. Poured blood the whole way. Bullet passed thru without hitting any bone. About a silver dollar sized exit hole.
I've got about 650 rounds thru the barrel. Maintain it perfectly, clean it after each hunt, and usually I don't shoot. 3/4 inch MOA at the range, easy, many times holes touching. Never shoot more than three shots in a group, and put rifle in rack with bolt open. Take my next three shoots with something else.
I'm 68 years old now. My son has promised to pass the Weatherby down to his grandson and teach him how to hunt with it.
I own 23 firearms. My Weatherby is to my rifles as is my Browning Auto 5 is to my shotguns as is my Colt Trooper III, 357 Mag is to my handguns.

I've always been partial to the pre 64 Model 70 and the quality control of Sako ( a company I hope you would do a video on).
I do have a Weatherby Mark V, in 30-06. Came out of their custom shop in 55', when, apparently, you could request a Weatherby rifle in non WM calibers.
Beautiful rifle without the cost/recoil of WM ammo.

I bought a new Weatherby Mark Five in .300 Weatherby back in the summer of '74 when I was a 25 year old mill worker in Omak, Washington. It has been my serious big-game and rock chuck rifle ever since. I like to load 77 grains of IMR 4831 under a 180 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip. In 1984 I moved it and myself to the Montana plains for several seasons of deer and antelope hunting. The Weatherby really shined on a couple of 400 yard shots, one on a mule deer and another on an antelope.
I never shot a .300 Winchester, but I have read that a .300 Weatherby case will hold ten per cent more IMR 4831 than the .300 Winchester case. For ten per cent more IMR 1831, the Weatherby get three per cent more velocity.

Awesome video . I learned how to shoot with a 300 Weatherby magnum as it was the only rifle my dad had when we went down south to hunt. He had saved up his money and we traded my 1st gun (which I never got to shoot), on the old 300 Weatherby. We were not wealthy people but my dad always dreamed of getting a Weatherby. I took my 1st deer with it and it completely destroyed 1 of the 2 front shoulders. I never took it again. That gun was too pretty and too expensive for me as a teen anyway. It is sure a powerful rifle and my 77 yr old dad still has it today. Old Roy really developed a whole new market I didn't know that part. Thanks for the history lesson once again, I always learn something from gunblue!

Very interesting story. I own 6 Weatherby Mark 5 rifles.
The 270 WBY is my go-to all time favorite. Shot a ton of deer with it.
They never take over a couple of steps before they go down.
I cannot validate their long range accuracy because I kill most within 200 yards of less.
I shot a big black bear { 400 lb's} with the 7mm Wby once and it only took one step before it dropped.
On the good side , I have never had to track any animal I've shot with a Weatherby.

As I have said before, I'm a big fan of your videos. You preach common sense, which needs to be taught in America once again. After wanting a Weatherby Mark V for a long time, I finally ordered one last year. I got a Mark V Ultralight chambered in 7mm Weatherby Magnum, which I think is the best cartridge Roy Weatherby ever came out with, the .340 Weatherby Magnum finishing a close second. The 7mm Bee/Roy, as some people affectionately call it, is not as overbore as some other Weatherby Magnums, and it won't pummel you in the recoil department like the big .300 Weatherby Magnum will. My favorite rifle is the Winchester Model 70, and I also really enjoy anything that has the Sako stamp. But the Mark V is an American classic, and it still holds up well all these years later. Thank you again for a great video. I am a younger guy, a young patrolman who is testing again for the Highway Patrol, and I wish more people would follow the advice and recommendation from you. I have a few 22 LR firearms, yet no 22 LR bolt action. I knew that in order to become a better rifle marksman I needed to add a good 22 LR bolt rifle to my collection. I've decided on the Steyr Zephyr II, made at the Steyr plant in Austria. It is pricey, but it is a beautiful little gem of a 22 rifle, and still more affordable than an Anschutz. I am normally a dedicated Leupold man for my rifle scopes, but I think that I'm going to top it with a Swarovski Z3, keeping with the European theme. I have the same plan for a Sako 85 Bavarian in 6.5x55 Swedish, an excellent hunting rifle in a truly wonderful cartridge that is extremely accurate and capable of taking most game American hunters generally pursue. I also want to commend you for your video on the great .257 Roberts, a rifle cartridge that should be more popular but isn't. America seems to always be about the Bigger Faster Better mentality, which is part of the reason why Roy Weatherby found success in the first place; he had the perfect crowd to preach the gospel of High Velocity to. Maybe one day American riflemen will realize that they don't always need a fire breathing Magnum to take down big game. Many of them are actually paying attention to this idea, as seen by the increasing number of guys who are purchasing 6.5 Creedmoor rifles to go hunting with. Maybe with a little bit of luck and a nostalgia for the past, the .257 Roberts can finally get the use and recognition it deserves. It works just as well here in the western states for mule deer, pronghorn, bighorn sheep, and even elk as it does back east. But I'm preaching to the choir. I look forward to seeing your newest videos, as they are very enjoyable to watch and I walk away with more knowledge and appreciation.

As the owner of a Weatherby LH Accumark in 340 Weatherby Mag, your comments are accurate (pardon the pun). Yes, it was about 2-3x the cost of my other rifles, and brass is rare and expensive. It did take me quite a while and lots of material to work up sub-moa loads for it. However, having a long range elk hammer has come in handy at longer ranges. I have other guns that are more accurate, but I really enjoy the Weatherby because it represents this east coaster's love of western elk hunting.

Thanks for your service, brother. A humorous aside, the Wolfhounds used to wait at night for our Jeep to go by their unit on the perimeter by the Laterite Gate. We had only our blackout lights on, and would try to get by quietly before they launched a mortar over us. Most of the time we didn't make it around the corner in time.

Shot a .460 Weatherby Mag and a .458 Win Mag on the same day many years ago. I was young then and that's how I survived it. Brutal and not much fun, though it's been in the braggin' rights category ever since. With an enraged elephant charging, I wouldn't feel the recoil and would probably be glad for light artillery like those. Beyond that, no fun, and way out of my price range anyway. Your hammering home the "excess velocity ruins meat" is a worthwhile effort. I was among the many who had never considered that aspect to any great degree before watching your videos, putting "knock 'em down hard" at the top of the list when maybe "don't ruin the meat" should be there. I guess it's a case of hunting for meat and self-defense getting blurred. Seems like a "duh" kinda thing and I had a few moments of feeling a bit dense until I looked around and talked to people. Thanks!

I read a interview in some sporting magazine many years ago, and Roy made the claim he could take any game on earth with his 300 Weatherby magnum using a 150gr bullet. He said he had successfully demonstrated that claim in many situations all over the world. "Speed kills", he used to say, and to an extent, he was right. Even though Roy might have done it, no way would I have gone to Africa to hunt any of the Big Five with that caliber, and especially with that load. Although he never said it, I know he had to have gone for brain or spinal cord shots {base of neck} on Cape Buffalo and Elephant. He would have had to use steel bullets too, an ordinary bullet would shatter at that velocity when it would strike dense skull bone

Ya know GB, I believe the time has arrived for your next lecture to cover another great 'all-around' cartridge...the 8mm Mauser chambering. This is a true legend of a design that needs more exposure and there is only one instructor and narrator that can give us the real skinny on the 8mm Mauser- and that is you. I'm currently building my own 8 mauser as my 'walking gun'..will give it a somewhat continental/african flare to its shape and finish...iron sights only.

Great video. My Brother has a Mark V in 7MM Weatherby Magnum. It shots 1/2” groups with 160 Accubond reloads. Recoil is very tolerable and the trigger breaks very cleanly. I think it’s a little too heavy to carry all day with a sling, but he has a backpack with a built in scabbard and it makes a big difference. Keep ‘em coming!

Love to listen to someone who knows what they are speaking about. I remember in the 70's a young guy that lived up the road from us bought three like matching stocks. The only one I fired was the .460. Being a magnum it was very interesting? I shot three rounds and I was done! I had probably the scariest
black & blue shoulder imaginable! I hurt for a week or so! I wasn't a lightweight and I was in good shape. The first round fired, stepped me back a couple steps! I was tucked in tight and leaning into the rifle it was brutal!
We lived in CT. He had no need for a elephant gun! Lol.
I look forward to your videos.

Can't remember who wrote it but............
And then he touched-off the 264 Weatherby Magnum.
    Birds faltered in mid-flight,
the grass on either side of the muzzle was scorched, and the groundhog was vaporized.
Always wanted a Weatherby for a wall hanger. Too beautiful to take out into the woods and fear scratching our gouging it.
    And the aforementioned recoil.

With 120 and 140 grain bullets, and their heavy 26 inch barrels and stock configuration, the recoil is no different than a typical 30-06 with 165 grain bullets.

@@GunBlue490 Buttttttttt........I wanted it in .270 Weatherby Magnum. Also the price of ammunition.
I have a Ruger M77 30-06 (Mark 1 ) that shoots very well with reloads, and a Ruger #1 in .243 Win. that runs Hornady Superformance loads of 58 gr v-max and 95 gr. sst very well. No need for an expensive rifle and ammo that I would not take into the woods for fear of marring its beauty.

Great video Sir! Interesting information about Weatherby rifle's and ammunition. I remember back when I had gotten out of the Army in the 1980's. There was a gentleman who attended my parents church at the time who was a pharmacist. He owned his own pharmacy, which also had a gun store/reloading equipment/pawn shop built on to it. He swore by the Weatherby Mark V in 300 Weatherby Magnum as the best tool for taking large elk out to extended ranges. He reloaded for his Mark V with a very hot 180 grain load. His son who was my age at the time wanted nothing to do with it. Too much recoil. He was a Weatherby dealer as well and he showed me a brand new Mark V 300 right out of the box. i thought it was the most beatiful rifle I had seen. The bluing like you said was so thick and shiny like nothing I had ever seen before. The stock was beautiful with the high gloss lacquer. It was over a $1000 then if I remember correctly so it was way out of my range. I did own a Vanguard for a while which was one of their models which was chambered in the standard .270. It shot Remington factory 130 grain ammo just as well or better than any reload I could come up with for it. I eventually sold it. I currently own a Marlin 336 30-30 and a Remington Model 700 ADL in .270 that have dropped every deer that I have ever had in my sights with for several years now and I am perfectly happy. God bless you and Benny sir.
