Burkina Faso transition: Junta leader's term extended by five years

- Burkina Faso's military leader will remain in power until 2029.
Ibrahim Traore was due to hand over leadership to a civilian government in July.
But a new charter has extended the transitional period by another five years.
Traore assumed power after staging a coup in 2022.
He has repeatedly warned that holding elections would be difficult, because of the security challenges.
Around half of Burkina Faso's territory remains outside of government control.

Come and see yourself if the situation is deteriorating, I’m in Burkina Faso and my country has never been as safe like now since the beginning of this terrorism crisis and under old regimes. My president wouldn’t get 5 more years if he wasn’t working and if we were not seeing improvements. If you know someone in Burkina Faso ask him how the situation is right now. And many of us wanted 10 years for him but unfortunately he got only 5 years.

Military has ruled Burkina Faso in many instances and not once has it succeeded in improving the living standards of their people. It was Burkina Faso military that ousted Thomas Sankara, it was the mismanagement of the military that led to weak civilian rule and current unrest. Burkina Faso military caused all these problems in the first place. The best they can do is take back regions from Jihadists, other than that they can do nothing.

Less than 40 % of Burkinabe can even read. How could they suggest anything at all? Also, Burkina-Faso has been run by the military for most of its independence and they never succeeded improving the lives of their citizens. How could they succeed when all they know is how to kill?
A few weeks ago, tens of thousands of Burkinabes rallied to demand something they were calling IB2050. Their enthusiasm for this demand seemed like something Traore could not resist. Today I am disappointed that he did not meet the demand for their so called IB2050.😥
