Wawrinka was poor but in Nadal this is a player who constantly baits us with whether he is going to be able to compete because of his "injuries". He always recovers when he needs to. I am sure it's the best way he can obtain a TUE.

Do you think Elon Musk (or his future great great grandchildren for that matter) needs to earn another penny for the rest of his life? No, but if he can make money he will.
Do you think Federer, Nadal, Djokovic or even the likes of Murray, Wawrinka, Medvedev and Zverev NEED any checks? Obviously not.
But they’re not going to get close to 7 figures just for showing up and playing a game they love and would play for free.
The point is that Nadal made several comments alluding to how this could be the end for him. If he’s in that bad of shape then why is he playing in matches that mean obviously nothing for his legacy?
      Because he WANTS the check.

Lets be honest at this point Nadal, Djokovic, Federer… they don’t give a fuck abou money i just for keep being competitive.
And that quote abou Elon is wrong too, hi lost a lot of money on many companies, he keep doing what he does cause he likes that, sometimes he won money sometimes no.

I’ve played while injured and it’s a constant distraction, preventing you from concentrating properly which is the most important thing in tennis. You’re always wondering if you’re making the injury worse by continuing. So I’m just saying his play is impressive at the moment considering what he has to deal with. Nadal has said that he has had a degenerate foot condition since the beginning of his career, so if you think he’s lying about this take it up with him. Nadal on the other side had to adjust his game with his permanent foot injury. It contributed to add more finesse to his game than never before. Yes Djokovic's game is usually sharper than Nadal because he anticipates more and has more angle than the Spaniard but not in this season for now in my humble opinion.
