    Joe Frazier was an Olympic gold medal winner and had already beaten Oscar Bonevena and George Chuvalo at the time when he boxed Buster Mathis. He was well known to boxing fans. Two rising stars in heavyweight boxing when they met each other.for the vacant heavyweight title here; after the boxing commission took away the title from Ali for refusing to be drafted. Frazier and Mathis were both fantastic amateur boxers, then became top pros in the heavyweight division. Frazier then becoming an all time boxing great beating the top heavyweights of his time, including Mathis, Quarry, Chuvalo, Bugner, Bob Foster, Ellis, Ali and others.

      Yeah, and Chuck Wepner was the inspiration for Rocky, according to Stalone, who tried to retract that statement when the Bayone Bleeder asked for a cut of the profits, but then was proven in a civil trial.

    • @nycinstyle
      @nycinstyle Před 4 měsíci

      @@robertcurran2765Wepner was a very tough guy, took on all comers. He lost to Joe Bugner, Sonny Liston, and George Foreman and other contenders back then in the very late 1960s and early to mid 1970s, and then Chuck beat Earnie Terrell by decision, his biggest win, - though Terrell was a bit past his prime. But Chuck eventually got his shot at the title. Wepner was a professional for over a decade when he got his first chance at a world championship held by Muhammad Ali - the most famous boxer, ever, and one of the most famous people in the world at that time.
      Chuck was experienced, been around took a lot of punches fought on, then as a huge underdog finally got his shot at the world heavyweight championship. He was a huge underdog against Ali. Then he knocked down Ali and the crowd went wild. (Though Chuck really stepped on Ali's foot, hit him in the body. Ali fell back). Wepner fought well above expectations. He got stopped with seconds remaing in the 15 rd after putting up a good battle. The experienced and tough underdog Chuck Wepner, yes, very similar in many ways to the career of the fictional character, Rocky Balboa. Two very experienced, very tough underdogs getting a shot at the heavyweight championship of the world: and doing better than expected.

      Mike Tyson didn’t beat any great fighter when they were at their peak. Frazier beat Jerry Quarry, Oscar Bonavena twice, Bob Foster, Buster Mathis, Jimmy Ellis and Ali.
      If you are including Tyson beating a over the hill Holmes as a big win then Frazier beating Ali was incredible! After his loss to Frazier, Ali proved he was far from over the hill by knocking out the then unbeaten George Foreman and win world title. Tyson beat Spinks who was a light heavy weight. Tyson was knocked out by Buster Douglas at 23 yrs old. People say Tysons peak was pre Buster knock out but what great fighters peak ends at 23? Razor Rudduck was not a great fighter, neither was Pinklon Thomas. Tyson was well beaten by the best heavyweights of the 90s, Holyfield twice & knocked out by Lennox Lewis.
      Joe Frazier only lost to Ali and Foreman, both all time greats in heavyweight boxing history.

    • @aidenbrooks7529
      @aidenbrooks7529 Před 4 měsíci

      @@judex3226 I did say Frazier has the greatest win in heavyweight history and I was talking about ali. And I agree most weren’t at their peak, and while Buster Mathis Jerry quarry and Bob foster were solid wins, but I wholeheartedly disagree about your evaluation on Pinklon Thomas, he was an incredible fighter when at his best and there’s a reason he’s the one fighter from the 70s that Holmes didn’t fight. I prefer Frazier to Tyson in practically all aspects and I do believe he’s somewhat overrated, but Fraziers resumè is relatively unimpressive next to his rival with no wins over fighters like Ken Norton, Ron Lyle or Shavers. Fraziers best wins outside of ali like Quarry and Foster were also arguably out of their prime with multiple losses at the time. Spinks was undefeated, Holmes had two very controversial losses (which I believe he won the rematch) and his wins over some of Holmes leftovers where at least decent even if they weren’t as good as foster and Mathis and he beat more champions which has to mean something, Tony tubbs, Tucker, bone crusher smith etc werent the greatest but they managed to all win a title. This is almost a devils advocate argument for me seeing as how Fraziers one of my favourite boxers and Tyson isn’t in my top 100, but I do think you’re being a little harsh on tyson to say Frazier had a better resumè

    • @aidenbrooks7529
      @aidenbrooks7529 Před 4 měsíci +1

      @@judex3226 I also think Frazier would’ve beaten Mike Tyson in all honesty, it would’ve been an explosive fight but I think Frazier would’ve weathered the storm and landed one of his classic left hooks and had tyson looking like he did against Buster Douglas, so trust me I’m not one of those people who thinks tyson was this unbeatable force in his prime, far from it

    That ship sailed after he won the gold medal in Tokyo 4 years before.
    Also, he was 67, not 70 when he died.
    Ali & Frazier had some small patch ups in their relationship for years, but Ali's mostly unrepentant attitude towards his Cruelty (& taking advantage of vicious racist stereotypes) after Joe had given him money AND tried to get Ali his license back in exile made it hard to make lasting amends.
