- Have you ever wondered how to get an image on your cake top? A Frozen Buttercream Transfer is an easy method of transferring your art to a frosted cake, without the use of an edible printer. It is like making a plaque from icing, freezing it and applying the design to your cake.

The beauty of buttercream is, if it does break use the same colors to 'glue' it back together when you put it on the cake.
Love it! thank you. I was able to use this to make an octonaughts picture for my sons 3yo birthday cake. First time and despite wobbles I'm so so happy with how it cane out. Hope it transfers OK tmr!!
love this transfer... doesn't matter if the neck is broken... this is a demo of what you can do....this helped me out a lots to make a decision on doing my first cake....thank you...
Thank you, this is the best demo I've seen for a BC transfer and explained very nicely. And I like how you took your time to smooth out both layers. Most videos I've seen only show the decorator smoothing out the outer lay, so when he/she lays the BC transfer on the cake, the icing does not look very smooth, as if it were piped right onto the cake.
she didn't mention this in the video but I think freezing after you finish the outline with prevent colors running and smearing. .

Thanks For the advice i shall try that.
Unfortunately it may not. I have found that black bleeds if too much gel color is added. Remember the color will darken if left out.
Thank you!!! You answered a lot of questions for me! Thank you again!
this was AMAZING thank you for sharing !!
This was awesome! Loved it!
Very helpful and very well done. Thanks for posting. :)
i do an all butter buttercream and its so yummy and it freezes very very quickly :)
Thank you for this video. This has helped me make cakes for every birthday for my kiddos
Thanks for the lovely idea❤
taking a class right now from Michaels, thanks
mylifeonthehill Is this Wilton course 1? Thanks!
I discovered a wonderful trick. I could not use 1/2 butter as suggested because I needed pure white for my design. Instead, I melted some white chocolate chips and added it to the buttercream frosting. I also melted dark chocolate and added it to the portion I needed to be brown. (I added a bit of extra water as well.) It still piped well. Because chocolate is so hard at room temperature, my design was frozen solid after about 25 minutes! Not to mentioned it tasted delicious.
Laura M awesome x
Awesome tutorial
Waww..amazing...
most AWESOME !!
Great job
This is Amazing idea...
kind of like royal icing transfers, a bit different but along the same lines. Thanks for sharing!
Great job it's so cute
Thank you.
i will try this using Ermine Buttercream on Friday 😊
Hi! Thanks for the video. I just have a question:
1) Is the buttercream consistency soft or medium? or more than soft?
Thank you
the best thing ive seen :) but what im wondering is if i cant fit my whole desighn into the freezer(im not the only one who lives in this house) if i can do in different parts like the head, body arms legs and then put them together on the cake??
An easier way of doing this (for those of us who are lazy and dont like tracing) just put the picture on a flatsurface facing up and cover it with the wax paper so u can c the picture and the actual colors without having to trace it.
The image you get icing that way will be flipped opposite to the reference image, just for those who care. (we mirror the image on the back of the paper in order to get it to be facing the same direction as the picture in the end result since we flip the frozen buttercream over). For example, if you use your method for lettering it would be unreadable unless you put it in a mirror to read.
Was the buttercream transfer placed on the cake while it had been chilled before or is the cake room temperature?
I love it
thanks
are you using which side of the wax paper? the side where it is waxed? or the side which is not waxed?
Super👏👍👍👍
@SuperKcourts i think what i would do is pipe the corrections on the cake as best as i could.. ..
Did you use just a regular buttercream and then put it in the freezer to harden?
@jailedan thank you
This is cool
? can I make the buttercream transfer frosting ahead of time. just wondering because it has butter in it and would I use regular buttercream for my cake?
For the recipe, does it have to be 1/2 butter 1/2 shortening? I usually use only butter...
Can I use butter and butter flavored shortening? How long will the image keep in the freezer?
Would this work with cream cheese frosting?
So glad I found this. I have to design a paw patrol cake for my daughter and couldn't figure out how to draw it without tracing bc I can't draw at all. So thank you
How did you do? I'm about to do one for my son. I printed out the paw patrol logo in reverse and I bought small paw patrol toys to place around the logo and I think I'm gonna pipe paw prints around the side of the cake. I've never really tried baking anything other than box cake in a rectangular pan so I'm nervous lol
Won't the colors run and smear all over the place after the Buttercream softens after putting it on the cake from the freezer
@MyWeezylover its common to use fake cakes when practicing cake decorating.. it's to save time :)
Just wondering what do you do when the transfer breaks as i could tell that the turtles neck broke
@IcedLipGloss She is actually tracing the image so that she can turn it over and get he reverse/mirror image. You are working on the backside of the image when you fill it in, so you need the reverse/mirror so that when you lay it on the cake, it is actually the original image. Sorry, lots of wording, but did that make sense? I know many people who, when they print the image from the PC, they just have the image reversed so they do not have to do all that this lady did.
So depending on what the image is, not always necessary to trace it.
Can this be used in place of fondant/sugarpaste items?
Hi, what are the sizes of these different tips? Also, where could I get icing bags from?
Thanks for this do you have a link to this image, please?
Can Italian Meringue Buttercream Frosting be used in place of regular buttercream?
How long can I leave the transfer in the freezer before using it?
Did u freeze the pic 1st before the last coat?
To me as a graphic designer/ photographer hobbyist I'd mirror image this before printing it then tape it under the plexiglass. instead of on top then no wax paper then freeze it I'd have to try it though wax paper might still be needed that would remain to be seen.
But if someone doesn't have plexiglass they're likely to use a cookie sheet, which you cannot see through. Also, if you don't use the wax paper, how are you going to get it off the plexiglass and onto the cake?
Exactly... Why not mirror it and then print... That way you don't have to trace
Does it have to be buttercream or can I use any other store bought icing?
Guess I'll be makin my own share bear head cake decoration lol can't find it anywhere...
QUESTION would it be ok to use my own homemade buttercream frosting
Ingredients
3 cups confectioners' sugar
1 cup butter
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 to 2 tablespoons whipping cream
Or should i buy some from the store that is already made
I made the mistake of making regular frosting with powdered sugar and it never froze it was soft after staying in the freezer for hours
Can I use a cream cheese buttercream for this? ty
I am doing a cake with different colors on it (black and white) and cant exactly fill the design in to blend with the cake because of the way the colors are. Should I just fill it in with black or white, or try to make the fill in color line up with the cake?
Could I put transfers on the sides of cakes?
I was wondering if this could be transferred to fondant? Assuming the fondant is flat, could i wet the fondant and press the transfer to it? Would that cause the icing colors to run? Maybe i. Could allow the transfer to warm slightly and press on lightly?
I'd assume you could. I would recommend using a bit of buttercream that matches color with the fondant to stick it down.
Thanks
@PinkMilkCarton The pencil doesnt come in to contact with the icing whatsoever so it shouldn't matter.
do you have to put white all over the pic
why cant we just use the wax paper and trace the piping gel over the actual image?
Hi i dnt have black to outline
We are confined here on my island cant go to buy wht can i use i nstaed
Anyone know if parchment paper will work for this as well? Or does it have to be wax paper?
Parchment paper would work as a surface but wax paper is much more transparent so you can see better to trace the lines and such. I put my wax paper right on top of the design I was making so it was just one step and I could see colors.
you must use Wilton Decorating Icing or make your own,
Buttercream Recipe Recommended for use
on Frozen Buttercream Transfers
1 stick of butter, softened
12 ounces of solid vegetable shortening
Cream together and add 1 teaspoon Vanilla
Add
2 pounds of confectioners’ sugar
3/4 to 1 cup of liquid (water or milk)
Beat until mixed together and fluffy.
IF YOU USE A KITCHEN AID STAND MIXER ( RECOMMENDED) YOU THE FLAT BEATER, NOT THE WIRE WHIP.......YOU DO NOT WANT TO ADD AIR TO THE ICING..
James Baum how much is 1 stick of butter?
@@asharp7782 1/2 cup
can you use a photo of couple and do it? x
useing this method can i do letters ?
Thanks for helping can't find a sonic the hedgehog cake anywhere
Woow
So question is the buttercream homemade , is it a stencil you are using?
You can use homemade or pre-made buttercream, but we used our recipe from our website wilton.com! You can use any stencil you'd like and print it out to use, and trace the reverse image. Just place wax paper over the tracing and pipe away!
How does the transfer stay stuck onto the cake? Will it thaw out ok, how does that work
It should thaw out to be normal buttercream! It would be as if you piped it onto the cake.
Can you put the transfer onto a fondant cake?
,ll
I did a humming bird with a flower. Pretty but did not remember to reverse picture. Oh well...next time.
Hi can I use parchment pepper are wax papper
We recommend parchment paper!
its neck is broken
what is the difference in icing and buttercream! Icing is in a tube and buttercream is in a bucket?
people call American buttercream icing because it has a really thick consistency and there is swiss meringue butter cream and Italian meringue buttercream and they have smoother consistencies so people call that buttercream
am using butter cream
Muy lejos no se ve el trabajo
How can you compare your trade to a cake decorators? Parts of your info is good, but try things out first, many people don't have either experience. That's why they watch!
After completing the design we have to keep it in the fridge ma'am.if yes for how much time.
Depending on the design, you will need to keep the transfer in the freezer for 90 minutes to 24 hours.
May i know is this method can apply to whipping cream or topping cream instead of butter cream?
TheTtdi No sorry the whipping cream or topping will never freeze hard enough, you won't be able to flip your design over once you are done pipping.
Thank you so much for your prompt reply. cheers :)
+Ttdi if u plan on eating it right away, the buttercream wont bleed onto the whip (which isnt attractive) however you can use buttercream on top of ur base iced whip cake if u dont mind some buttercream on it.
TheTtdi s
why my have holes
can you tell me why my have alot of holes
Sandra Santana you may have too many air bubbles in your icing when you pipe it
Can I use any buttercream recipe?
Julisa Beauchamp You will want to make sure and use a buttercream with vegetable shortening. The vegetable shortening helps to firm up the buttercream when freezing and will keep the design from sticking when you transfer it to your cake. Here is a video on how to make Wilton Buttercream that work great czcams.com/video/NMMZMbziaTw/video.html
+Wilton Hi...I don't see a link to the buttercream video.
when u cut it the cake wouldnt that part be like hard??
No...as soon as it thaws to the temperature of the cake it isnt hard anymore. smh
she totally broke the turtles neck. you can see a split toward the end of the video.
can I create this on wafer paper and stick it directly to the cake
Think it through
Is the pencil you used to trace the image food safe?
Does it matter? It never touches any food. 😑
i thought its about elsa kkkkk lol
cool.. but the camera is just so far
Why bother having the intermediate pencil drawing if you're going to put a wax paper on it anyways? Can't you just put the wax directly on the original and do it from there?
She traced it so it would be reversed since it gets flipped when put on the cake. The simpler thing to do is digitally reverse the image prior to printing 😉
i can see she broke the turtles neck
i like turtles.
no duuhhhhh
fuq jajnme
This turtle
why do they do weird designs that are unpopular? I can't imagine too many people want a turtle cake
I see them for little kids a lot
I would think a turtle cake would be used at a babyshower for a baby boy!
😂
It’s just a basic demonstration to give you the fundamentals
Sorry but this video is horribly done. The whole camera angle is wrong and sometimes too far away. Hope next time you guys do better . Thanks
