  • After owning the Roscoe for 6 months I have picked up a few niggles and decided to do a review of the things I love, the small irritations and the outright annoying issues of this Trail bike.

    Good review, your bad list is mostly bike maintenance...
    1- dropper issue, after wiping the bike use some suspension spray on the dropper post.
    2- Spongy brake- depending on the conditions you may have not been modulating and they overheated or your body position is too far forward. You may need the reservoirs top off or a fine adjustment.
    3- derailleur issues- probably a limit screw+cable stretch issue.
    4- You could run a higher pressure on the road, use a different tire with a different compound, or get a set of 29er’s?
    5- bike rack issue- use a hitch mounted bike rack?
    6- Pedals- does anyone actually use the pedals that come with a bike? Lol
    Also, scratches- it’s a more recent Trek paint issue, my older Treks still look pristine

  • @houseofcards4511
    @houseofcards4511 Před 3 lety +47

    The derailuer issue probably has to do with your limit screw. There are two screws that limit how far up and down the derailuer can move. Adjust the upper one and you should be fine.

    I've got the 2020 version of this bike and it's nearly identical. I've put it through it's paces in AZ, Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. It's performed very well in most circumstances. When I got it I was weighing in around 285 lbs. This is a tad heavy for this bike but it handled it pretty well. I'm relatively new so I'm not doing jumps on it... yet... but by the time I do, I should be nearly half the man I started out on it as I'm over 20lbs lighter thanks in part to the exercise I get riding this thing.
    The one thing I've noticed after a year of riding in all sorts of conditions is that the cassette seems to be wearing a bit. Some of the cogs are already creating clicking sounds. I lubricate nearly every time I go out and clean the bike regularly so I don't think it's that. But this slight clicking equates to the occasional pop when trying to change gears going up hill. And yes, I not only have had it adjusted professionally, I personally did a better job than my LBS did, yet it still does it. After careful inspection I've noticed some of the teeth are not perfectly straight. So I'm already considering upgrading the cassette and derailleur.
    Oh and those original pedals were awful. They were exactly the same quality of pedal as what I had on my GT Aggressor Pro... which is pretty sad. Some RaceFace pedals weren't that big of an investment and now I have the shin scars like everyone else....... 😁
    Over all, I'd buy this bike again. Only paid $1350 for it last summer during the peak of the bike buying craze so I can't complain!
    And yes, it scratches bad. I often have to store it with my wife's bike and you can tell where our bikes rub each other even though we're super careful. This is not to mention the scratching from bumps and bruises when out and about... and no, I've never actually crashed it yet.

    I recently got a Trek X-calibre 7 as I wanted something that could do a bit of everything. Light single track, commute, carrying luggage on racks etc. I have also had problems getting mine to shift into the lowest gear and it’s a 46T ring. It just seems too big! Mine is the same blue/ grey scheme and I was also surprised how easily it scratched and chipped. Compared to my 2013 trek hard tail it has less scratches after multiple years use. I am keen to get a roscoe 8 to run next to the x-calibre for heavier trail use and bike packing. Having the matching paint will look pretty cool! Thanks for sharing

    All good points, I have Silverback Trail that is very similar. Mid fat tires really are slow on gravel roads. Fixed the brakes by putting 203mm rotor on front, moving the 180mm to the rear, and paying particular attention to bleeding and topping up fluid. The ugly you missed was no 148 boost rear.

    • @hindesite
      @hindesite Před 3 lety

      @@Wetdogsmells Think about it. Depends on the situation. For high end brakes with heaps of power, you may not notice any different. On these low end brakes you certainly do, and that is my experience. Also, why do manufacturers put different size rotors front and rear, then?

    I had the Roscoe 8 for about 2 years now and had them convert it to tubeless before I took delivery. My dropper post been fine so far. Brakes are adequate for the area I ride. Gear changes, so so. Needs a new chain already. Handle bars always seemed too wide for my liking. Makes the bike uncomfortable and hard to get around tight spaces. I plan someday to have them shorten them up. Bike seems "heavy" to me. Like I'm peddling a tractor trailer up the hill. But that gives me more exercise (workout). The tires are nice and bike performs well on most all terrains. Had it on dirt, mud and snow with good luck. On ice, it didn't do so good, but everything would have had trouble on that trail that day.

    The SRAM Derailleur you have has a known spring tension issue that prevents you from shifting into the biggest cog. You could try to get it replaced via warranty. Though if you had the components many people just replace it with Shimano Deore or go up a level with SRAM.

    My bad: keep an eye on the fork pressure, if you notice a significant decrease, quit riding and have you local bike shop notify Sram. Mine and apparently many others had faulty internal seals and eventually the negative chamber will have a positive pressure and blow out the wiper seal.
    About the slow dropper, check the set screw on the lever, mine had come loose and the cable had slipped.

  • @waynerenshaw-multi-outdoor4521

    Your rear mech saying not hitting the 50T it's just basically gear cable tension, as after a few rides the cable will stretch, just dial it in and get the tension right 😉🤟 I have the Trek Roscoe 7 and love it, but just wished the hubs were sealed bearings as I stripped mine down and greased them and set them properly, as when I got mine I was on Trek Roscoe group page on Facebook, and there were big issues on there hubs , failing after 3 to 6 weeks, so when I got mine I checked the spindles and found that front and rear were so tight they wouldn't turn at all.. and that literally they'd fail after a week, so luckily me being in the know how to fix these issues, sorted them as on checking them , they had no grease either .. so sorted with high performance grease for bearings and been running smoothly since July last year . 👌 great vid and good info especially for beginners... dropper post I usually add some grease inside the lock ring , unscrew it of then add some grease underneath it and screw it back on .. this stops grime getting in and keeps it running smooth 😎👌

    Agree about the paint. I’ve got the (2018?) grey version, and the paint on inner side of chain stays rubbed off on my second ride from just a bit of mud stuck on sides of tyre. Also the rear hub is shit to be honest. There’s clear movement on the rear axle, no way to adjust. Even my lbs recommended to upgrade to Hope. Love the bike tho

      OK, so that's been my biggest concern. Did you have to replace your cassette too? Mine is starting to have very slightly bent teeth and makes a very quiet clicking noise even when pedaling by hand on the rack. I'm not happy with the non-adjustable clutch on the NX either... seems it wouldn't have been that hard to make it adjustable.

    I love this bike, rode about 4000km on it and I feel is the most comfortable and fun hard tail mountain bike I have had for the last 20 years. Only negative is the chainring which is too small with 30 teeth so Max. Comfortable pedalling is about 32km/h.

    Paint is terrible. Such a nice teal color on my Roscoe 7 2020 is chipped and scratched everywhere. If that bothers you well be prepared. I have 15 years old TREK 3700 just brushed aluminum color and it looks newer that my Roscoe... Rear hub boost 141 is another pain. Seat on the dropper post is wiggling around...Impossible to fix. Despite that Roscoe 7 and 8 are good and capable bikes. Would not recommend Roscoe 6. For not so large money surplus you will get way better bike.

      I have an SQ2 and it is a phenomenal bike. Same frame as the SQ3 but obviously 3 has upgraded parts. The roscoe is a good bike too, it’s honestly up to personal preference. Me personally, I would go with the Marin, you could even get an SQ2 and upgrade it yourself, although the 3 comes with a RockShox revelation which is a phenom fork, but I also really dig the recon that came on mine. Good luck and good riding brother.
