@@whollenbeck8 good point!!!
Lex is definitely going big soon. He’s already got a huge audience, but I could see him reaching new audiences with these guests that stick around long term
Hope he won't get too big. I started following him because he did long format discussions with scientists on topics that deeply interest me. The occasional popular guy is fine, but I really hope he focuses more on guys like Aaronson, Bach or Yann LeCun.
Biggest on YT is pretty much a lock. I'd be skeptical of Lex becoming the biggest overall tho, mostly because JRE still exists, but also because podcasting is a very diverse, very competitive medium. Add in the Spotify's, iTunes, et al and the landscape looks way different than what YT's limited corner might imply.
I used this interview to listen to him one time and only.

This is a breath of fresh air. Lex is like the anti Pears Morgan, he is very calm and never interrupts. I think he has a lot of success ahead of him.

It's apparent how Ben's demeanor and intellectual engagement changes when he feels he's speaking with someone sincerely interested in an open minded and charitable discussion. As with many others, I certainly have my disagreements with Shapiro, but don't deny his sincerity or insight. Thanks for a wonderful conversation, and your continued promotion of civil discourse.

@@STL-sl7zv Ah, touche! I just see apostrophes misused so much that I get tired of explaining their use to people. Would you prefer my usual spiel?: It's "lets" his guest talk, not, "let's." Apostrophes are used to indicate a contraction, as in, 'let us' becoming "let's." Great interview. You are both wise beyond your years. I'm twice your age yet marvel at your intellect and learned much which reminds me of how much I don't know. The only critique I have is that compared to the vast majority of interviews I have seen with his other guests there was a subtle yet hard to describe under tone of negativity. I think the most obvious thing I can think of is the number of times Lex gratuitously said he "disagreed" with Shiparo on matters of subjective belief...that coupled with his light hearted condescension. Unlike his interview with, say..Joe Rogan, you don't get the feeling that the two went out for a few beers after the interview. Though minor at best it is pretty atypical of Lex which is why it was noticeable at all. Other than that it was an excellent interview.
Ya Lex didn't really seem to want to make an opinion of his own challenged, unlike with Micheal Malice. But tbf Ben is a lot more high profile a political figure so he might have been forcing himself to fencesit to keep the interview shorter.
Ben Shapiro's whole schtick is negativity, Lex did not ADD that to the conversation.
@@chrisstroesser6563Seems to me it's your bias against him that creates a sense of negativity. Because i don't see him as generally negative.

That's the first thing I did when this first started! I thought I had it on 1.25x again, nope!
Dude can rattle off some words
He speaks too fast. Maybe he thinks speaking fast makes him win any argument or right in an argument (not saying I disagree with his views, just saying that he needs to slow down, and he can still get points across without talking fast)
@@kaylariggs5188 what's funny is in the beginning it is obvious Ben is trying to slow down his speech but falls right back into his normal speed by halfway through ;p
I am so glad this podcast exists. I have learned to appreciate and respect people that I would not otherwise listen to. Lex has a way of interviewing from neutral. His guests that I have seen have been non-confrontational and not defensive. They are allowed to answer the questions and have authentic conversations. Bravo.
You can't have an 'authentic' conversation if the host, Lex, is completely clueless about who he is interviewing. Shapiro lies to his face for 2 hours with self benefiting bullshit, but because Lex is a lazy attention seeker like most podcast hosts instead of someone who actually takes time to learn about his guests so he can call them out, he lets Shapiro get away with everything. So as a viewer you have no fucking clue what to take from a conversation where you cant vouch for someone's honesty. A Lex Friedman watcher who is unfamiliar with Ben Shapiro will at best not come away with anything from this interview, and at worst be horribly misinformed about a dangerous far right #1 among domestic terrorist show host.

It's just because Lex's thinking seems slow, vague and idealistic, like a stoned person, not quick, clear and concise, in my opinion.
I looked up something about lex before I made this comment so I realize that he's educated and intelligent apparently. But I still wonder if he uses cannabis products! Lol!
@@ucghandyman just because someone speaks with purpose and takes their time does not mean they are under the influence of cannabis. That's ridiculous.

I agree. Lex seems to want to learn the people he interviews. Really he doesn't debate but gives his opinion when it's appropriate during the interview.

become that human
If one were invited to 110 parties and at each party one was thrown out, would we assume that one had the misfortune of encountering 110 bad hosts or would we assume one is a poor guest?
Assuming this is surrounding the Jewish/ kanye topic, the correct answer would obviously be that higher ups in the music industry are pieces of shit. Not that it’s a Jewish thing. Kanye had a bad experience with Pete Davidson who’s a Jew, and so he likely had bad experiences with every record exec, and yet is choosing to only focus on the Jewish ones. Suge knight isn’t a Jew, Diddy isn’t a Jew, Bird Man isn’t a Jew, they’re all black. And they’re all exploitative record execs. If I’m trying to affirm my bias, I could continue listing bad black people in the music industry while ignoring all the bad white ones. Is almost every Jewish record exec a bad person? Probably. But so is almost every white one, black one, atheist one, Christian one, etc. it’s an industry in which exploiters rise up regardless of race or religion. It’s similar to blacks being thieves or Asians being geniuses. That obviously isn’t the case for every black or Asian person, not even the majority. But when you look for a pattern, you’ll find one. In reality, cultures make much more sense then race ever would. The music industry has a culture of exploitation. So most Jews in the music industry will be exploitative because most people in general that belong to that industry are. Most thieves are black. Not because they’re black, but because in some of the negative black spaces there is a culture around hustling and cheating. But if you want to believe black people are inherently thieves, you’ll subconsciously go out of your way to find patterns to affirm that. I’ll leave you with this; replace “the Jews have too much power” with “Mormons have too much power”. And even though it obviously isn’t true, you’ll be able to find patterns. “The Mormons essentially own a U.S. state, the Mormons own multiple major universities, the Mormons had the leader of the Republican Party in 2012, the Mormons are significantly more wealthy than most other groups on a person to person level” etc. You could really do that with any group and be able to have it work the same way. Pattern recognition is not at all a good excuse for determination, our brains are hard wired to find patterns. Even when they mean nothing, we’ll still find them.
Lex probably has the best podcast on the planet at the moment.
Asks questions and listens. Lots of listening. Letting guests talk.

Thank you for this interview. I have always found it very difficult to listen the Ben Shapiro, partially because he generally talks at warp speed and anytime I have heard him speak he has an unpleasantly sharp edge in his voice that is somewhat caustic. You managed to get him to show a softer side, he is talking to you instead of talking at you. Though there are many things I would disagree with Ben Shapiro about, I was for the first time able to hear him. You are an excellent interviewer with the gift of putting your guest so at ease that they respond with what seems to be honest answers. Thank you for what you are doing. One of the biggest problems we face in a world of divisive sound bites and slanted commentators is we never actually hear what the other side has to say in a non- combative manner.
It’s very similar with Ben on Rogan’s podcast. He’s been on there and shown his softer side as you described it. I think generally from what I can tell he views his show and public appearances as a competition of sorts, and that’s where the edge comes in (considering how he got his start in his career as more or less a professional debater), but on podcasts he’s much more relaxed and lighthearted. Joe’s really good at getting that side of him, if you enjoyed this one I’d recommend Rogan’s episodes with him. Makes him look like a fellow human instead of a political figure
I do love watching Lex's opening monologues - reminds me of The Twilight Zone
I so admire Lex’s ability to hold space for challenging conversations, being charitable to his guests while also pushing back as required. He is a great example for how to engage with those with a variety of different views.
The best
Except he’s not having any challenging conversations. He allowed a superstar rapper to ramble on yet never once was a factual interrogation of fact undertaken. Kanye is not equipped for *that* conversation and judging by Lexs own reactions and emoting I don’t think he is either.
What struck me is that with Lex Fridman here is that we jump straight into the good and evil without hearing what the subject said. Questionable ethically, in my view.

As long as they’re jewish right

One thing I really like about Ben Shapiro is that he can fit a 5 hour interview into 2.5 hours like he does above. Lex sounds like an LP being played at the wrong speed by comparison.
What do you know about rolodomor?
Lex is by far one of the best interviewers today. He asks questions in a way that has the viewer surprised (like, no he didn’t just ask that!) yet it is very relevant, honest, curious, and non threatening. Nice work keeping people honest in the most loving way, Lex.
Lex is good but he's not the best. His interviews can be very very dry and monotone. I've tried listening to alot of his podcasts that I was never able to finish because by the middle of the interview I wanted to hit my head against the wall. Nothing against the kid, good heart but the attention grab for me just isnt there.
Yeah, but I could punch lex up into the air like a kite, so
Agree he is so composed
I don't think they networks would hire him. I think he has a tendency to be fair and hear both sides of the issue. The Networks want moderates who will coddle the Democrat candidate and be harsh with the Republican candidate.

And that's why China deployed a weapon on our youth, TikTok. Millions of kids holding in the highest regard other TikTokker's occupied and obsessed with the same dances and challenges instead of being occupied with true role models, mavericks and trail blazers that give us new directions and idea to think about and inspire us. Think how evil genius on behalf of China TikTok really is... what kid would want to be a scientist or leader in politics when they see other kids seemingly being stars that millions adore. China made TikTok to steal our youth's attention and brain power we need for America's future, the data mining was always just the icing on top. They want our kids to grow up stupid knowing they got us with beat on kids taking education seriously, so TikTok was deployed to keep as many American kids brains occupied with dances and challenges over education. Evil genius idea, and it's working.

I think you're talking about Hallo Hallo, the British comedy Ben.
I don’t lean left of centre but this is good. I like Ben. Very smart and great presentation skills. His positions are well thought out and reasonable (for the most part). Lex is the best on the planet at what he does. He always gets the most out of his guests by letting them talk. He has his own opinions but listens to his guests in a none judgemental way. He is always well prepared, asks unique questions, is educated himself in a way that is relevant and applicable to many unrelated fields of study. Absolutely first rate. I so appreciate Lex Fridman.

This is the sign of high emotional and intellectual intelligence. I am amazed at how many on the left speak about their superior intellect, yet never leave the cocoon of their echo chambers. The one thing that will destroy this nation is the point at which we are not able to speak and attempt to understand one another, reaching compromise, and having debates in the public space while feeling safe enough to share differing opinions. I fear we are not able to do those things anymore on a broad scale. This breaks my heart, because I have reached out and spoken to street protestors for abolishing rights, I hold dear. I try to understand their viewpoint and speak to them with love and kindness. I hug them when I have to leave and shake their hands. I tell them thank you for being brave and courageous enough to protest in such a public place, and for exercising their rights which I served to protect. We have too often forgotten that the core value of our nation is the freedom to have discourse amongst ourselves while respecting each other's opinions. I certainly hope for a time when we can regain that freedom.
Thank you, for sharing that you are open to the opinions of others. This is what will heal the rift amongst us, not the visceral and damaging rhetoric occurring on both sides of the aisle.

Together with Yay's interview Lex is showing us how to communicate and offering us different viewpoints to broaden our perspective. Definitely don't agree with Ben on everything, that said huge thanks for sharing your views and helping me see more sides.
I agree I just wish Lex Fridman, Joe Rogan, or any sort of these other "conversation" podcasters would have on just one mainstream liberal. Their liberals are either the most extreme economic populists like Noam Chomsky or Bernie Sanders, or Joe Manchin-esque liberals. Routinely they invite on every mainstream conservative commentator under the sun to give commentary on every modern social wedge issue but will NEVER invite on a progressive counterpart to do the same.
@@appleproduct1524 I have seen many mainstream liberals on both podcasts you mentioned as well as many others. What specific people are you wanting them to have on?
As an aside, do you realize that your average liberal talking head doesn’t want to go on “neutral” shows? I have seen many routinely turn down offers / pronounce they would not want to go on such shows. They are much happier to stay in their echo chambers. Conservatives have been much more willing to do these types of interviews for the last several years.
@@appleproduct1524 Like who? I've seen Jimmy Dore, Kyle Kalinski, Abby Martin, Destiny, and a number of lefty reporter types even from NYT or wherever who's faces are there but names escaping me atm, etc etc. The Adam ruins everything guy even went on jre one time arguing a very progressive stance on Trans Rights, that didn't even make sense.
Can you give some example names of who you think are missing? And what's more, are they the type that would even actually turn up if given the option?
Last time I know of of a CNN guy going on JRE, after basically demanding a spot for opportunity to "balance the conversation and debunk Joe in front of his own audience", the guy then actually just ended up retracting all kinds of lies his people had been pushing when challenged with actual facts and logic, but then turned around again after the show and claimed he was just "afraid for his safety" from Joe and didn't mean any of the true things he said while there.
As far as I can tell, the modern "Progressive" viewpoints just don't yend to hold up to any scrutiny, so folks pushing it tend to resort to censorship of their opposition, offer to go on but cancel behind the scenes while claiming the contrary happened, or have been represented but aren't recognized by people making claims like yours, or have been represented but just didn't end up having anything as memorable or sensible to say.
That doesn't mean the conservative types never say anything stupid on these shows. Matt Walsh, Steven Crowder, Milo, tons of "right" types have gotten backed into a corner. The difference seems to me that they are more likely to turn up, have a good faith conversation, and say memorable stuff even if they failed to defend their positions adequately.
Also hit pieces tend to come out whenever these guys host someone the progressive and/or establishment left don't like, but they ignore the fact that they also host lefties all the time.
So again, what progressives are not represented that will actually turn up and have a good faith conversation that hasn't been on already? Not rhetorical, I'd really like to know what I'm supposedly missing out on.
What was and is missing in/about the Ye conversation is an obvious point IMO:
Obvious a random person of "certain demographic" is almost certainly not part of some collusion to exploit others along the lines of ethnicity or religion for personal power and wealth. Saying so is a gross category error that's dangerous to all involved, and has a well known ugly history.
However that doesn't mean that there aren't or haven't been people of "certain demographic" that DO/DID collude or conspire along the lines of shared ethnicity and religion against others, today or historically. Labeling all accusations of such as pure lunacy and/or bigotry, and hiding behind "worst event in the 20th century" (even if the apprehension is well warranted and totally understandable) does seem to likely be protecting individuals and almost certainly even some institutions that should not be protected and allowed to continue abuses by staying in protective shrouds of darkness and special protections.
Note that I'm not pointing any specific fingers here as I lack enough information to do so accurately, but I could make some guesses that probably wouldn't be allowed to remain visible in the comments, assuming I was willing to guess aloud without being certain, which I am not despite estimating the probability of accuracy to be fairly high.
Edit/PS: This is obviously not the cause of disproportionate success though, which appears to be a culture that promotes a work ethic and family structure that's conducive to long term success.
Most humans don't seem to be able to handle nuance.

Ben, when you talk about good vs. great people, I wonder if you've read Middlemarch by George Eliot? She writes about those people who are good, some aspiring to be great, and some aspiring to be great who are very bad. The last paragraph of the audiobook version, read by Dame Judi Dench as the author, talks about those good people lying in "unvisited tombs." Which happens to all of us. Eliot also says - and I love this observation so much that it's part of my X bio - "One must be poor, to know the luxury of giving."
