- The Freebird ornithopter, designed by Nathan Chronister, has introduced thousands of people to the amazing hobby of building your own ornithopters! These mechanical flying birds really fly just by flapping wings! This is the original design on which many others were based. By using the right materials and a proven successful design, you can build your own ornithopter that really flies! Get started off right with the Freebird ornithopter. PDF instructions free download:

The Childrens Britannica from about 1981 had a very similar design in the back of one of the volumes. From memory the connecting rods were balsa rods with short pieces of tube on the ends. And the tail might have been slightly different, I think the angle for the tail was cut into the main stick and it was simple glued on. But basically very similar to this.
I am grateful and my grandson will be extremely happy because of this video.
This is brilliant and simple. Thank you for your design and posting this tutorial.
Way to go. Always start simple first then go from there. Well presented. Many thanks.
hi please help me mine is flying a short distance and then falling :(

Super good channel.
Tnx bro.

WOOW...!!
One question Nathan Chronister. Can barbeque sticks be used as alternative because it is just the same. Just for the tail support
:( Man, I wish your kits were still available!!
Nice fly.. Sangat indah
Boa noite Nathan Chronister ! Como faço para conseguir um diagrama para montar este Ornitoptero ?
Which rubber have you used
From where can buy it
Sangat jelas penjelasanya..
Trimakasih.. langsung saya praktekan di rumah.....berhasil..anak saya senang...terima kasih banyak..
Is this competitive for ornithopter events?
Can any one post link for free plan
Because mine is from the Philippines. Very different. It has designs on it. Those who sells the toys doesn't know the word 'Ornithopter'
I need the design
Can I use a regular rubber band
Hi, do you think I can add sensors (angular rates and acceleration) on it? Or if I want to add them do you think it would be easy to modify the design to make it fly?
Kindly guide because I need to do it a school project
I can't download the pdf from your website
where to buy?
Hi Nathan, thanks for the video. I'm from India. It would be great if can give us the weight of the each stick has and how much it should weigh after everything is built. thanks. Till now I made 3 birds. none of them flew. I made 2 before. After seeing your video, I've made 1. This is also didn't work. 1st known thing is, I'm using home rubber bands. 2nd unknown thing is how much weight it should have. 3rd I'm using ice cream sticks instead of Basel wood. 4th once I fly this the connecting wires are bending easily. I'm not sure I'll get this specific rubber band here in India.
Nope you dont get that rubber in India. It is Tan Super Sport Rubber. You can import small qty from www.fly-m.com/rubber%20stock.html but no guarantee it will reach, especially if you are in a small town. Or ask someone returning from US to get it for you- you can order from Peck Polymers.
With no light balsa and no TSS rubber, very little chance you will get it to fly. Of course, I havent made it myself to prove it but that rubber has no match.
@@ashutoshbhakuni303 thank you for replying. I've ordered balsa wood. Let me check I have any friend in US. It is OK even though it's not flying like your bird. It should fly at least.
Fashion Kids Fun Good luck. I am interested in knowing where you have ordered balsa from and if u have prior experience of buying from the seller?
Besides thickness, density of the wood matters. And so a low density wood of the required thickness might not be strong enough to say withstand rubber tension. The densities of balsa vary widely and I havent seen any Indian online retailer mention density or even inform after asking. Chinese ones mention density but there is a wide range and each order can have sheets of very different densities. So I am curious to know which seller u have ordered from and the shipping charges.
@@ashutoshbhakuni303 here is my order details www.amazon.in/gp/product/B0734JNNCQ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Main iski copy Kari aur result bahut achcha
I don't have that rubber band, so I'm gonna use a tire's interior

please put easy bird
I like the design but why everything has to be special?! I was waiting to hear cut that piece with a special saw, sand it with special sand paper that you can only get at my website
This video tells you how to make it with things you can buy at a hobby shop.
