Ornithopter Servo Conversion: Crossbow 2 RC bird flies with servos instead of conventional gearbox
The Crossbow 2 radio controlled (RC) ornithopter was designed to fly with a conventional flapping mechanism. An electric motor with gear reduction turns a crank, which flaps the wings. But the modular design makes it possible to remove the gearbox and replace it with two powerful servos to flap the wings. The servos will give us more control over the wing motion, such as the ability to control the angle of the flapping. But, will the servos be able to match the performance of the conventional flapping mechanism?

Crossbow 2 Ornithopter Kit (RC / Radio Controlled)
zhlédnutí 6KPřed rokem
A first look at the new Crossbow 2 ornithopter kit from BirdKit.com. This is a large, radio-controlled (RC), flapping-wing aircraft with a wingspan of 68 inches (1.7 meters). The Crossbow 2 was designed so that it can reliably go into a glide whenever the motor stops, an ability that has been lacking in many ornithopters. The modular design offers some great potential for future modifications.

Freebird RC Ornithopter - Steering Controlled by Wing Movements
I purchased a ornithopter from ornihobby. Despite a few weak parts, it flies quite good. I wondered about converting the main motor drive to the central spur gear to be belt driven with a lower kv motor.. But after seeing this, I'm wondering of servo drive on each wing would be better.
Very good job. Very realistis...👍🎉😊
Such a nice natural movement. Ive been searching for a 3D printed version of an ornithopter today, and this is the nicest movement ive found all day. Looking forward to seeing more.
Thank you for the info! Could you tell more about whole electronics setup for HSB-9360TH? I'm trying to build raspberry-controlled ornithopter but not sure how to connect it all together.
I love the part were he build the part
Would it be possible to use hydraulics?
What were your reasons for using the adafruit controller over the Arduino?
could you tell me about the centre of gravity position? is it 1/4 chord from leading edge?
On the nose, there is a rope tied to the wings, whether this is a regular rope or a rubber rope?
The Childrens Britannica from about 1981 had a very similar design in the back of one of the volumes. From memory the connecting rods were balsa rods with short pieces of tube on the ends. And the tail might have been slightly different, I think the angle for the tail was cut into the main stick and it was simple glued on. But basically very similar to this.
Thank you very much for putting this together. Very informative.
I just keep coming back and realizing how good your build is. I have built my servo driven ornithopter, but the some aluminum gears in the servos are failing. I need to address this issue but I'm looking for alternative designs as well and I found your channel. Did you make the aluminum servo horns?
This is epic! I know the micro controller does it automatically, but for simplicity's sake do you think it's viable to just jam throttle up and down to achieve the flapping motion? (with increased weight/sensitivity of course)
if you do not mind , would you send me the gear reduction picture in 3 d ?? just the dimensions of them

Hi! for my undergraduate thesis Im trying to do a robotic butterfly that serves as a survillance camera. Im thinking the ornithopter model serves this purpose pretty well, do you know where can I start researching this? or is it just trial and error?
nice flight, how many grams is the weight of this flapping wing?
It's really impressive .... Could you please tell me where I can buy the servo controller ready to us ?? I understand that the board you mentioned in the video is just the hardware ?? but it needs the firmware to run it ... Thanks a lot
*The Landsraad would like to know your location*
Would this fly using Spektrum equipment (receiver and transmitter). I think I saw a 1000mah battery in the specs - on average, how much air time does this give you?
Thank you for doing this research! I find it strange that there is so little footage of the motorized ornithopters, there was video taken of the first airplane even 40 years earlier, so it's not as if the camera was not available. I'm looking forward to seeing a flying version of the model 😉
thats very cool!
Amazing! Thanks for sharing
So basically birds see black and white with different shades of black and white
that's really really COOL! wish more hobbyist do more omnicracft rc
some late thoughts. i find it unsatisfying when a 'thopter flies like it's in a continuous stall. that is why i think a 'thopter needs to have a variable cg; slaved to throttle. maybe try a more forward cg with a higher flap rate. i'm sure you know that the amount, and bias, of the slack in a membrane wing are major factors in how a wing will perform. maybe try more wing membrane tension with a higher flap rate. d
👍 . I would love to see a more realistic wing stroke though. Folding in during the upstroke and pushing the wing forward during the downstroke. Seems fairly inefficient with the straight up and down. But I understand the complexity goes up a fair deal.
Can it dynamic soar😂😮
💖💖💖💖
Cool, now put a HD FPV system on it and send it though the newest gap 😜
Great
💜
In the video, is the flight of the birds at real speed? Why 2 servos for movement, when one would be enough? Anyway, very good work !
By two servos it allows full directional control
Do you mean turning left and right ?
This is the future of RC aircraft. Really performs like a bird
So cool
thanks
What is the reinforced wing material that you use? Could you please link where I can buy that?
Like many ornithopters a high performance kite fabric is used. This one is a polyurethane coated polyester called Icarex. It is difficult to source but I have been able to find it on ebay.
@@OrnithopterZone1 Thank you!
@@OrnithopterZone1 I have purchased kite fabric, it is really strong. I see that the material is sewn, but you also use some kind of glue to hold the thin carbon rods in place. What kind of glue or glue tape do you use for this? Thanks!
Please what the toque of the servo And any links to get that servo?
Speed and torque for each of the three servos tested are shown in the video. The best servo for this ornithopter (of the three that were tested) was Hitec HSB-9360TH. It has a torque of 17 kg-cm and speed of 0.06 sec@60deg at 7.4 volts. As mentioned in the video, using a slower servo with more torque, HSB-9370TH, was not helpful. Additional information on the servos can be obtained from Hitec: hitecrcd.com/products/servos/digital ...or Servo City, which is also a good place to buy them from: www.servocity.com/servos
The lower frequency strokes seem to work better because they can get more travel on the wing
Yes. Although I did try even lower frequency and it was not as good. There is an optimal value.
Excellent work. Is this possible to share your arduino code?
It's actually PicBasic. The code works within the limitations of the PIC 12F683, simple but effective. I do use Arduino for most projects, and then I use a sine function instead of the lookup tables. what is the servo motor brand ? and could it actually move a 30 grams wing?
Is there any way to get a full part list, step by step instructions, and blue-prints on the website.
What a sweet Orni ! sad to see all the chem-trails in the sky ! 😢
What about Riout 102T Alérion of 1937 ?
this is a much simpler approach -- probably because Schmidt knew that the wings broke in the wind tunnel or probably he wanted to simplify it to the max so that he could improve it later
How can i get the code
I gotta ask??? Did anyone else see colour (human vision) sequences then ultraviolet sequences that just looked black and white?
Poggers
I want to build something similar, but I think that the servos will break after only couple of minutes of flight right? Is there a way to make the servo last?
I never had any problem with the servos even after many flights. It is amazing, because they are very cheap servos. I rarely had servos quit working in other ornithopters. It is always cheap servos and I never had any problems with the Hitec brushless servos that I use in my larger ornithopters.
I want to build something similar, but I think that the servos will break after only couple of minutes of flight right? Is there a way to make the servo last?
why would the servos break after a few minutes? get nice servos with enough torque
Doesn't the servos get hot? Is it better to use direct-servo drives instead of motor and gearbox? thx
