Hey Scooby. I'm currently 34. I've started as a hard gainer, a skinny dude 12 years ago, and thanks to your guidance I've changed my life by doing nothing more than home workouts. I feel and look great! I'm working out naturally, without any supplements other than a protein shake. I've bumped onto few problems tho. For the last 4 years, I feel I hardly gain anything, or maybe I'm even stuck at a plateau. I've watched and read hundreds of advice from the pros on how to break a plateau (including your own tips) and it doesn't seem like it works. I was changing my diet, tried to shock and confuse my muscles, tried tons of different workout plans and even did calisthenics. The only advice I could not completely implement is the very one you're talking about in this video which is hitting the same muscle group 2-3 times a week. When I did try it I always ended up with an injury that set me back weeks or even months. After every workout, I still feel a crazy burn on my muscles for another 5 days or so, and I just can't do another good workout for that group. Is my body just that bad at regenerating? Is there no other way for me to keep on going forward than taking the "stronger supplements"?
I've been working out at home for almost 8 years. I initially had just a couple sets of light dumbbells, but most of the exercises I did were body-weight exercises. Not much later, I got a door pull-up bar and soon after started P90X. Then I bought a few more heavier sets of dumbbells because I believed that in order to gain muscle mass, I needed free weights. I gained 15-18lb of muscle. I had seen a handful of videos of people putting on muscle mass using just body weight, so I wanted to do the same. Long story, short, I went minimalist, sold my heavier dumbbells, and bought resistance bands which I can bring with me even when I travel. I got lazy for a while and lost most of the muscle mass I had gained. I started working out again [this time with bands] and gained the same muscle mass again. Fast-forward a few more years, I still use bands, but not as often, however, I have not lost any muscle mass. Am I saying that you should get rid of any equipment/weights you have at home and to stop going to the gym? No. My point is that there'll always be excuses for not working out at home whether it's because you don't have weights or a certain piece of equipment or anything really. If there is one piece of equipment that I always want to have, it's a pull-up bar. When I moved last year, I couldn't install a pull-up bar at my new place. Instead, I used the door frame which had a bit of thickness to it and did finger pull-ups. I couldn't do as many but it was better than nothing. I did some research and found videos on youtube on how to use a door (not door frame) to do pull-ups. Another must for me is a way to do dips, and all you need for this is 2 surfaces of about hip height: 2 chairs, 2 desks/tables, or the best option, the corner of where 2 countertops meet and form an L shape. There are many upsides to working out at a gym but 2 major downsides: first one being the commute, and the second and most important one is the dependence on it. When you workout from home, you learn to use your surroundings, you adapt. I've traveled quite a bit and I've never had access to a pull-up bar during my trips; however, I've almost always found a way to do pull-ups. I want to reiterate. Keep your gym membership, especially if you go regularly, but if you ever feel like not making the commute or if the price is stretching your budget, that doesn't mean your health has to suffer. A few seconds of searching on youtube and you'll find plenty of home workout videos. If you're interested, I'll be releasing an extensive and home workout (for beginners and advanced) video within the next few days. No equipment required, not even a pull-up bar. ;)
Looking back at my comment, I can see how that can come across as a recommendation rather than a do-as-you-wish suggestion; I meant it as the latter. Everyone I know who workout regularly has a gym membership, and some people feel very strongly about keeping it, and it seems like they get their money's worth. I don't think I'd ever get one even if I had money to throw away. I'v also heard that a lot of people keep them because of the "free" [included in the price] classes. HolzstockG, I agree 100%. My current roommate has a stationary one which I use and I love it.
TL;DR you can get plenty big with light dumbells or bands for shoulders and just doing pushups and pullups, you will just very quickly progress into a rep range that will require you to perform so much volume its actually sub-optimal training, not to mention you will get stronger faster working legs with barbell lifts and/or machines
I am 55, and find that I do better with frequent shorter workouts than with epic super intense workouts. I train with resistance bands and body weight, which is more time-efficient than classical home gym work with adjustable weights. Doing two-a-days is still a bit much during the week, but works well during the weekend. So the weekly split can look like this: Monday upper / Tuesday lower / Wednesday upper / Thursday lower / Friday rest / Saturday upper + lower / Sunday upper+ lower.
Scooby, your are the man! I dug up a 16x16x2 concrete patio tile. tied a rope around it so that it might act like a weight, that had been placed in the earth for 20 years. I checked Sports Authority and Walmart, and there were not dumbbells to be had! Either online of off! Whatever is at hand can be a weight . Preach it, brother!
I've honestly been finding home workouts a lot more engaging, because it's been forcing me to be a lot more creative with my methods with respect to progressive overload. Anyone who thinks you can't get an excellent workout at home (unless you're a powerlifter or require like 500 pounds of resistance) is almost certainly deluding themselves, especially if you've got some dumbbells, a door pull-up bar, a couple of sets of resistance bands (with door anchors), and a couple of paper plates. I've also noticed how when I'm at the gym I tend to fixate too much on how much weight I'm using and get rather impatient about progressing to heavier weights, rather than trying to get the most out of the movement by holding the peak contraction and really FEELING the muscle contracting and then slowly returning to the starting position. That intensified mind-muscle connection makes the workout both more enjoyable and more effective. And, of course, you end up needing *significantly* less resistance when you try to maximize the quality of the movements that way (and probably end up causing a lot more damage to the target muscles in the process).
Damn! Scooby is still f'n jacked!! One of the best tips I've gotten from him was his take on high protein meal planning on a budget. Now, specially during this pandemic where you really gotta mange your expenses, I'm putting it into practice more than ever. As far as home workouts, as an introvert I was already ahead of the curve one having a home gym way way before shutdown. But this "push/pull split twice a day" sounds like a great way to shock the body for gains with a new routine. 12 years and still giving great advice! Thank you Scooby.
The difference between home and gym is equipment. I love working out at home but i also enjoy the added equipment in the gym. It makes your life so much easier, especially when training legs.
@@scooby1961 I just dont have the space for that. I live in a flat, where i have a room which is 13m^2 small. So the only thing left is dumbbelsquats, which i cant load properly becaude then my arms would be ripped off.
M4D AL3X you don’t even need weights to get a great leg workout if you are willing to go the high volume route. Try the 30 down squat workout popularized by prisoners. You start by doing 30 bodyweight squats, then do a set of 29, then 28, etc. until you get to 1. If you keep rest times very short (5-10seconds), your legs will be on fire afterwards. Then after do some hamstring sliders by putting a towel on either a wood or tile floor and doing bodyweight hamstring curls.
I found this man a few days ago, at first I thought he was a tough, annoying and stuff like that guy but MAAAAAN does he have a soothing voice with the body of Hulk
You can get in great shape at home . How bad do you want it ? It's actually better at home you gotta be creative and try new things. Sometimes people just go through the motions at the gym . Mind muscle connection and hard work is what matters .
Man Scooby. I've been watching you and working out for pretty much 10 years. I've been changing from commercial gyms to home gyms (depending on home and availability). Now I've been forced to work out from home again. Biggest blocker now is finding equipment to workout from home. Luckily I have a pair of 30 pounds adjustable dumbbells which allow me to do plenty. Man I just realized that I wasn't subscribed to you :( Meh following you on Facebook all this time. Just clicked subscribed. And thank you for all the work you have been doing. I couldn't have gone this far without you.
that's exactly what' i've been doing 2 workouts a day every other day. i've been splitting it up doing lower body in the morning and upper body in the afternoon
I do arms, shoulders abs and upper back at home pretty often in that way I can do 5-10sets of arms in the kitche while cooking my carb, then set an timer and prepare my protein sources for the oven, start then do 10 sets of shoulders when the alarm clock rings I take out my protein sources, fix the veggies and sauce and do the last 5-10sets for the day... Might be abs ;) Usef this methof for +10years and it still works great!
A good basic routine with exercises that involve all the major muscle groups three times a week ... be consistent . Basically just show up..At home or gym..For beginners.. Scooby keep it going love you man..peace and love to you and your family
Bought my first pair of dumbells shortly after leaving the army. One thing let to another, and now I'm all set up for heavy compound movements as well as cardio, strength, fitness. A little pricy, but worth it in the long run.
I had been going to a gym for the last ten years, now I work out at home.I was fortunate that I had a full set of Olympic weights. What I did not have I built. As for my workouts, I split my upper body work in two parts. One hour in the morning and 45 minutes later on in the afternoon.
When I was starting out in 2018/2019 I was going to a gym to understand the basics of compound movements. In the end of last year I finally afforded stationary pull up bar with stance for dips, plates and hex bar. Now I can do everything I wanted at home which saves time and I can train in only underwear :D I recommend this solution to everyone. Earn some money and spend it on tools your going to use because it will last for years and can do fitness in one place without having to going out.
@Leotis Bennett So? He could be on a small dose of testosterone as trt. Nothing wrong with it. I very much doubt he's on heavy, dangerous stuff like tren or insulin. It's ok for women to take hormones from age 13 on (such as birth control pills) but if we men do it at 60, everybody loses their fucking mind.
Good advice as always Scoobie. The Pandemic has given me the chance to fall in love with working out from home. I love how simple and efficient my workouts are. I've really focused more attention on dumbbell floor pressing and the results have been fantastic. I will never go back to regular flat benching. Plus Floor skull crushers are my new favorite triceps exercise now too..lol I agree with you that a Push and Pull program is the best way to go, although I slightly prefer doing Push, Pull, Legs. I keep things simple by banging out 5 exersises for each workout and keep my sets between 4 to 5 sets between 10 to 20 reps. You got me hooked on the high rep Floor Skull Crushers. Respect!
I do push pull. 4 day split. I alternate between heavy vertical and heavy horizontal. Follow by light. So example. On push day one. I'll do heavy bench followed by light overhead. Then switch these two around day 2. My go to routine.

Training at home is the best. It allows one to do what matters the most. Be alone to focus w/out distraction on hard work. 2 a days is a very slippery slope that leads to over training for nattys.
Scooby you are not that old, and I think you look awesome. Thank you for this video, just keep 'em coming please 🙏 Stay healthy both you and your husband, cheers from Finland 🇫🇮
I cannot workout twice a day, Scooby... I have to work from home for at least 9-10 hours... So am sticking to 1 hour a day... 4 days a week... Upper body twice and lower body twice... That's the best I can manage... Stay home... Stay safe... Stay blessed...
I'm old school arms, chess &shoulders, back&legs. Then repeat. But I do it in 1 take for as long as it takes. Could not do it twice a day with work and kids.
I will try this now that I am working from home. I wonder how training twice a day compares to “greasing the groove” where you bang out some reps every 15 minutes.
For me it’s more about what is recovered that I train. Today back and chest weren’t sore, I also had the time to train both today, so I trained chest before lunch and then trained back before dinner. I eat a bit more today, but also got my 20m cardio session. Tomorrow I won’t train any muscle, and simply go running for 20-30m at a fast pace. Friday I’ll train legs and do some light 20m jogging and maybe chest if it’s recovered, and I’ll train back on Saturday and probably do 20m lf swimming and on Sunday I’ll probably do chest again.
Hey Scoobs, i adapted the home workout way years ago. thanks to you. People thought it was crazy. But i didn't want to spend money for a membership.. Now i'm as fit as i've ever been and i can keep it up thanks to the basic equipement at home. I'm having a pullday today! When this is all over will you visit The Netherlands in the future? Lots of great bike routes and trips possible here offcourse!

I haven't been to a gym for the last 10 years. I much rather prefer to train at home. No strangers (except the neighbors.maybe) are watching me huffing and puffing
After almost 30 years of gym I´ve just started out to train at home, and very well sensations.Don´t mind where you train, your muscles don´t know that, they only know about failure.
A big difference between a home gym and a standard gym is that you can't masturbate at a regular gym. Well, you could, but I can tell you from personal experience that they frown on it.
Guys, I need serious help because it drives me crazy. I will show it to you on example. I just done legs training, 5 exercises in total. It took me 3 damn hours. And 30 minutes was warm up and mobility exercises, I try to be it short but I just need more time to feel ready, properly warmed up, and I am afraid I get hurt. So if I would do simply 4 sets of for example hip thrusts, 1 easier set, 2 harder sets, and last set to failure, the failure seems like I can't lift it, but I don't feel the burn u know. And I can't kill it, u know. It's just like a simple, stimulation u know I feel like I didnt do enough. Like if I go by feel I feel like I fcking done it, I killed it but I dont enjoy it bcs I am fatigued. I don't know I am so stressed of working out, it's killing me... If I go by 'program' I feel like it was a lazy bad workout I don't feel much sore or in that sense. If I go by feel I am in the middle of workout fatigued, and yeah... I just don't know what to do with it. I workout more over than year, still trying experimenting, but hell. Idk what's wrong. So much stress. Idk I would just simply move weights, go by my beliefs and that's it. Idk
3hrs = way too long. Sounds like you have rituals you have developed that all need to be discarded. Start over. You get a 10 minute jog to warm up then start set 1 of squats. You get one warmup set of squats at 50% max weight, period. Then crank out your workout, you get 50 minutes. You stop exactly one hour after your warmup set started, no exceptions.
@@scooby1961 Sounds like Paralysis by Analysis is my case right? Thank you for your reply sir. But I don't think that's simply possible. It's possible when you work out just one body part but not two, and legs has hamstrings, quads, calves... it's so large. Do you think that I, rather still a beginner, shoulf simply focus on quality not quantity? That I can do just one exercises for biceps, 3 exercises for legs...
Another tip, don't drink your calories. Food fills you up faster than liquid. I stopped having Drinking Chocolate and now eat Mars bars instead. Lost a ton of weight.
So true. I feel stronger and gained some muscle through working out and eating properly especially after working out in the afternoon. I usually have a glass of water and a glass of milk as well as some almonds after lifting weights. In fact, I feel more defined in the abs and noticed my arms are somewhat bigger. It does help to not stress as much and sleep better besides eating right and working out at least 1 hour a day but no more than 1 hour 45 minutes. Right now I am about 5 ft 11 inches tall and 148 pounds. By the way in Texas, gyms could be open again in 13 days at 25% capacity which is including employees.

@@scooby1961 Fai enough. Thanks Scooby, I'll check it out!
I worked out at home for years and then went to the gym for months...its not the same...my kids are running all over the place
get them to workout with you! make it a family affair!
@@scooby1961 thanx good idea
No equipment required, not even a pull-up bar. ;)
:) I agree with everything except the “keep the gym membership” part :)
Check stationary pull up bar instead of these that are mount on door frame, ceiling or wall if you want some.
I only do calisthenics and some light lifting as well, using my heavy backpack full of books lol.
LOVE THIS DUDE...respect !
I prefer to workout at home. Lol. I get to scream as I do that last rep. 🤣
Me too but I think the neighbours hear it as well 😂
@bEaT eM' aLL I sound like I'm being murdered. Lol
Can you get good results just working out at home only? I rather work out at home to lol , or should I be hitting the gym to?
“What do you think?? The gym is some magical room....” Yes Scooby!! I do! Lol
You are not alone! Lots of people are convinced that the Gainz Godz only visit buildings that have a huge "Gym" sign plasted out front :)
Thanks for all your super valuable information. Always honest and interesting. Please keep it coming. be safe.
Thanks Scooby! If the world had more people like you it would be a much better place! Thanks for the workout routine advice! You’re the best!!
I appreciate that
Shout out the The big OG Scooby, i been fucking with you for years, Take care and be safe, good to see your still Jacked🏋🏿♂️🏋🏿♂️👍🏿

Scooby is the 🐐. Like the Uncle I never had.
During this COVID-19 crisis, Scooby is more appreciated than ever before, touting his home workouts.
"That the gym is some magical room that blesses you with gains?!"
Yes. Yes I do think that.
Lol!!!
Thannks!
Been following your videos since 2011. Saw you were still at it recently. Impressed.
thanks for being a long timer!
Still looking great scooby, a great inspiration. I wish I could maintain such a form until my 60s.
@Leotis Bennett You sure?
The monster is back. He is back to inspire the fans. To scare the extra pounds and strengthen the muscles. Look at these muscles.

The difference between home and gym is equipment. I love working out at home but i also enjoy the added equipment in the gym. It makes your life so much easier, especially when training legs.
I build what I need.
@@scooby1961
I just dont have the space for that.
@@StrengthHacksCoaching i know it is possible, its jusy very hard.
M4D AL3X embrace the difficulty and you will go far in lifting and in life, you got this!
I found this man a few days ago, at first I thought he was a tough, annoying and stuff like that guy but MAAAAAN does he have a soothing voice with the body of Hulk

@@scooby1961 no, thanks to you sir
You can get in great shape at home . How bad do you want it ? It's actually better at home you gotta be creative and try new things. Sometimes people just go through the motions at the gym . Mind muscle connection and hard work is what matters .
Yes!!! You get it!
Use this time to hit weak or lagging body parts. Ive added more calf raises, rear delt flys, and dips/push ups...
Chose a FUN workout and all else falls into place
Saxton hale!!!!!
Bought my first pair of dumbells shortly after leaving the army. One thing let to another, and now I'm all set up for heavy compound movements as well as cardio, strength, fitness. A little pricy, but worth it in the long run.
"Pricy" is relative. At $30/mo for a gym, doesnt take long for it to pay off.
Chris Dickerson used to work out with maximum 40lb dumbells, but with short rest periods and high volume of sets...
Im glad I opened my eyes I started hating the gym but still craved working out,,, 4 months in I'm getting. Better results than the gym ever gave me
I'm only just catching on Uncle Scoob - After years of you championing home workouts
:) Hi!!!!
I had been going to a gym for the last ten years, now I work out at home.I was fortunate that I had a full set of Olympic weights. What I did not have I built. As for my workouts, I split my upper body work in two parts. One hour in the morning and 45 minutes later on in the afternoon.
:)
I've always wanted to know if working out twice a day is viable. Now I know. And I'm definitely gonna try it. Thanks Scooby!
Thanks for the video Scooby, always good to hear you.
You bet
This Covid situation has really made fitness come full circle for me. Any old school Scooby fans feel this?
the whole world is now joining us for home workouts!
@@scooby1961 It's great to see you posting. You're videos got me training seriously at age fifteen. I'm twenty five now.

Just got to watch you don't get too self absorbed. Can be healthy but be careful not to develop unhealthy mindset ✌️
Looks amazing for 60!
@Leotis Bennett So? He could be on a small dose of testosterone as trt. Nothing wrong with it. I very much doubt he's on heavy, dangerous stuff like tren or insulin.
It's ok for women to take hormones from age 13 on (such as birth control pills) but if we men do it at 60, everybody loses their fucking mind.
still the best of all fitness channels

Good advice as always Scoobie.
The Pandemic has given me the chance to fall in love with working out from home. I love how simple and efficient my workouts are.
I've really focused more attention on dumbbell floor pressing and the results have been fantastic. I will never go back to regular flat benching. Plus Floor skull crushers are my new favorite triceps exercise now too..lol
I agree with you that a Push and Pull program is the best way to go, although I slightly prefer doing Push, Pull, Legs. I keep things simple by banging out 5 exersises for each workout and keep my sets between 4 to 5 sets between 10 to 20 reps. You got me hooked on the high rep Floor Skull Crushers. Respect!
I like home workouts now being around to many people at the gym drains me .
Too many idiots at gyms who never learned 1) manners 2) to share 3) common sense

I do push pull. 4 day split. I alternate between heavy vertical and heavy horizontal. Follow by light. So example. On push day one. I'll do heavy bench followed by light overhead. Then switch these two around day 2. My go to routine.
Good stuff

Lol!
Believe it or not, with bands, anchors, an eliptical machine and HIIT Bike, I can work out from home now more effectively than gym.
Training at home is the best. It allows one to do what matters the most. Be alone to focus w/out distraction on hard work. 2 a days is a very slippery slope that leads to over training for nattys.
depends on age, sleep, and stress levels.
Doesn't depend on any of those?
It never works out for nattys.

I cannot workout twice a day, Scooby... I have to work from home for at least 9-10 hours... So am sticking to 1 hour a day... 4 days a week... Upper body twice and lower body twice... That's the best I can manage...

Great info scoob! Always my go to channel for fitness
Thanks!
I will try this now that I am working from home. I wonder how training twice a day compares to “greasing the groove” where you bang out some reps every 15 minutes.
no relation to greasing the groove. IMO GTG is not a great idea
This is great! Thank you.
I have followed your channel many years and I appreciate it and your deep knowledge...
So nice of you
For me it’s more about what is recovered that I train. Today back and chest weren’t sore, I also had the time to train both today, so I trained chest before lunch and then trained back before dinner. I eat a bit more today, but also got my 20m cardio session. Tomorrow I won’t train any muscle, and simply go running for 20-30m at a fast pace. Friday I’ll train legs and do some light 20m jogging and maybe chest if it’s recovered, and I’ll train back on Saturday and probably do 20m lf swimming and on Sunday I’ll probably do chest again.
that keeps the workouts fresh!
Hey Scoobs, i adapted the home workout way years ago. thanks to you. People thought it was crazy. But i didn't want to spend money for a membership..
Now i'm as fit as i've ever been and i can keep it up thanks to the basic equipement at home. I'm having a pullday today!

After almost 30 years of gym I´ve just started out to train at home, and very well sensations.Don´t mind where you train, your muscles don´t know that, they only know about failure.
yes!
It's been so long since I saw one of your videos. Amazing to see you look great!

Dude you awesome. Been a long time fan of your videos. Very happy to see you posted content. Old fat guy right!

Respect! Been in the game since day 1 of youtube. Fuck these haters scooby.
Buffest boomer out there since the dawn of youtube.
Yo don't listen to anyone... I justt watched ur videos before 10 years.. ur almost the same... Keep grinding
Glad you're our of retirement good sir
You need to find your limits and see what works if you dont gain strength after a few months probably time to try different things
Another tip, don't drink your calories. Food fills you up faster than liquid. I stopped having Drinking Chocolate and now eat Mars bars instead. Lost a ton of weight.
Damn Scooby! I hope I can look as good as you when I'm sixty.
Most people don't look as good at 30.
This is actual really good knowledge. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
